UK made fewer vehicles for the fifth straight month in May as Trump tariffs bite

LONDON: Britain's vehicle production declined from a year ago for the fifth successive month in May, industry data showed on Friday, as factory disruptions and US tariffs weighed on automakers.
UK car and commercial vehicle production dropped 32.8 percent from a year ago to 49,810 units last month, marking the worst percentage drop in May output since 1949, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic-hit 2020, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Exports to the UK's two biggest markets, the EU and the US, declined by 22.5 percent and 55.4 percent respectively, SMMT said.
US President Donald Trump's 25 percent tariffs on imported automobiles and parts, imposed in March, have disrupted global supply chains, added hundreds of millions of dollars in costs for manufacturers, prompted export suspensions and pushed several automakers, especially in Europe, to consider shifting production to the US to avoid the duties.
British manufacturing also contracted in May, as output, orders and employment declined.
Still, SMMT chief Mike Hawes said the UK's trade deals, especially with the US, and a more positive relationship with the EU, provided some optimism.
The US and UK reaffirmed a previously agreed trade deal during the G7 summit in Canada earlier this month, under which up to 100,000 UK-made cars a year can enter the US at a 10 percent tariff, lower than the 25 percent rates other countries face.
In May, Britain reached a trade deal with India to lower tariffs and set quotas on auto imports, while also moving closer to the European Union on cooperation in defense, energy and agriculture.
Car production, excluding commercial vehicles, dropped by 31.5 percent in May, largely driven by model changeovers, restructuring and the impact of US tariffs, SMMT said.

VATICAN CITY – The office that manages Vatican investments and real estate on Tuesday reported a profit of 62 million euros (around 63 million) in 2024, up 16 million euros from 2023. It's one of the best results in years and a bit of good news as Pope Leo XIV begins to tackle the Holy See's longstanding financial crisis. In its 2024 report, the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, or APSA, said it had directed 46 million euros of the profit to fund the Holy See's operating costs. Some 10.5 million euros in profit came from good returns on investments, while its real estate profits equaled its 2023 results, the report said. The Vatican has been running a 50 million to 60 million euro structural deficit for years and is facing a 1 billion euro pension fund shortfall, a critical scenario that represents one of the greatest challenges facing Leo at the start of his pontificate. The Chicago-born math major, though, is said to have a head for numbers, and his agenda in his first weeks in office has been filled with meetings of the Vatican's various financial entities. The Vatican has 4234 real estate properties in Italy and 1200 more in London, Paris, Geneva, and Lausanne, Switzerland. Only about one-fifth are rented at fair market value. Some 70 percent generate no income because they house Vatican or other church offices; the remaining 11 percent are rented at reduced rents to Vatican employees. In 2024, these properties only generated 35 million euros in profit, essentially equaling the profit of 2023. Financial analysts have long identified such undervalued real estate as a source of potential revenue, but APSA has little money to invest in renovations necessary to justify higher market rents. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will press Donald Trump on ending 'the unspeakable suffering' in Gaza, and also talk trade, when they meet Monday at the US president's golf resort in Scotland. The talks will come a day after the US and the European Union reached a landmark deal to end a transatlantic standoff over tariffs and avert a full-blown trade war. Starmer is expected to push Trump on urging a revival of stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas as a hunger crisis deepens in the besieged Palestinian territory. The meeting at Turnberry, southwestern Scotland, comes as European countries express growing alarm at the situation in Gaza, and as Starmer faces domestic pressure to follow France's lead and recognize a Palestinian state. The leaders will also discuss implementing a recent UK-US trade deal, as well as efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine, according to a British government statement issued late Sunday. But it is the growing threat of starvation faced by Palestinians in Gaza that is set to dominate the talks, on the third full day of Trump's trip to the land where his mother was born. Starmer is expected to 'welcome the president's administration working with partners in Qatar and Egypt to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza,' a Downing Street spokesperson said. 'He will discuss further with him what more can be done to secure the ceasefire urgently, bring an end to the unspeakable suffering and starvation in Gaza and free the hostages who have been held so cruelly for so long.' Trump told reporters Sunday that the US would give more aid to Gaza but he wanted other countries to step up as well. 'It's not a US problem. It's an international problem,' he said, before embarking on crunch trade talks with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen at the resort south of Glasgow. Starmer and Trump's meeting comes after the UK PM backed efforts by Jordan and the United Arab Emirates to air drop aid to Gaza. Humanitarian chiefs remain skeptical such deliveries can deliver enough food safely for the area's more than two million inhabitants. On Sunday, Israel declared a 'tactical pause' in fighting in parts of Gaza and said it would allow the UN and aid agencies to open secure land routes to tackle the hunger crisis. Tariffs Last week, the United States and Israel withdrew from Gaza truce talks, with US envoy Steve Witkoff accusing Hamas of blocking a deal -- a claim rejected by the Palestinian militant group. Starmer held talks with French and German counterparts on Saturday, after which the UK government said they agreed 'it would be vital to ensure robust plans are in place to turn an urgently-needed ceasefire into lasting peace.' But the Downing Street statement made no mention of Palestinian statehood, which French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his country will recognize in September. More than 220 MPs in Britain's 650-seat parliament, including dozens from Starmer's own ruling Labour party, have demanded that he too recognize Palestinian statehood. Number 10 said Starmer and Trump would also discuss 'progress on implementing the UK-US trade deal,' which was signed on May 8 and lowered tariffs for certain UK exports but has yet to come into force. Trump said Sunday the agreement was 'great' for both sides and that Starmer was doing 'a very good job.' After their meeting they will travel together to Aberdeen in Scotland's northeast, where the US president is expected to formally open a new golf course at his resort on Tuesday. Trump played golf at Turnberry on Saturday and Sunday on his five-day visit that has mixed leisure with diplomacy, and also further blurred the lines between the presidency and his business interests.

LONDON: Nick Cassidy capped off his final weekend with Jaguar TCS Racing in spectacular fashion, claiming victory in Round 16 at the London E-Prix. Cassidy's lights-to-flag triumph at a sold-out ExCeL London also secured him second place in the FIA Drivers' World Championship. Having scored just a single point in the opening six rounds of the season, his late surge underlined a remarkable turnaround. 'Honestly I love racing in this place,' said Cassidy. 'It's not been that kind to me in the last few years, but this weekend it's absolutely delivered. When this stadium is packed full of people it's a pleasure to race here and it's great for Formula E. Also, it's my last race for the team, again I've had the best car today, and this one is 100 percent for them. 'When the tyres are working well, when the car's perfect, everything becomes efficient. For sure it wasn't easy at the start to keep the lead, but I think between Mitch (Evans) and myself we could manage that well. I'm gutted for him, to have had a one-two would have been perfect,' he added. Cassidy finished 13.5 seconds clear of Mahindra Racing's Nyck de Vries, the second-largest winning margin in Formula E history. Only Antonio Félix da Costa has previously won three consecutive races. 'It was certainly a very challenging race,' said de Vries. 'Obviously Nick didn't want to get too down on energy versus everyone behind, so he was making sure he stayed on the same energy as us and that resulted in a little bit of a concertina effect behind us. 'I'm very pleased to bring home another podium and give P4 to our team, because they've done an incredible job. To consider that last year we qualified last on merit, and we've come back from such a long way – finishing fourth in the championship here this year is a great effort, so I'm very proud of everyone at Mahindra,' he added. Envision Racing's Sebastien Buemi completed the podium, charging through the field from 19th on the grid to third place, his second podium in three races after also finishing in the top three in Jakarta. 'In the end it was important to not get caught up in those incidents, I think I was lucky enough to make sure I was avoiding them well,' said Buemi. 'I saved quite a bit of energy at the beginning and that basically allowed me to take the ATTACK MODE properly. So in the end I'm very happy with that, it's good for the Teams' Championship, and it's good when you have a bad qualifying like that to finish and score some good points.' Jake Dennis of the Andretti Formula E Team crossed the line in fourth, while Jaguar's Mitch Evans was classified fifth after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding under Full Course Yellow conditions — a punishment that dropped him from the second place he had claimed on track. Newly-crowned drivers' world champion Oliver Rowland failed to finish after a collision with Nico Mueller on Lap 16 forced both out of the race. Despite the DNF, Rowland received a hero's reception from the London crowd, having sealed his championship title earlier in Berlin. With Rowland's early exit, Nissan's slim hopes of overtaking Porsche in the Teams' and Manufacturers' standings came to an end. Porsche, who had quietly gathered momentum throughout the season, clinched both the FIA Teams' World Championship and the inaugural FIA Manufacturers' title — their first in Formula E. Jaguar TCS Racing also overtook Nissan to secure second place in both championship standings, closing out a high point in their final race under Barclay's leadership after 127 starts in the all-electric series. Elsewhere, it was a disappointing end to the campaign for NEOM McLaren. Both drivers — Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird — failed to finish the final race after separate incidents. The team concluded the season sixth in the Teams' standings, with Barnard finishing fourth overall on 112 points and Bird eighteenth with 31 points.
