Umrao Jaan recently returned to cinema: 4 Urdu novels still waiting for their big screen debut

Indian Express19 hours ago
Umrao Jaan recently returned to movie theatres. And with its return brought nostalgia and a reminder of the great Urdu literature that once inspired Indian cinema's most poetic moments. Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan, adapted from Mirza Hadi Ruswa's novel Umrao Jaan Ada, is much more than a cinematic gem. It is Urdu literature in motion. Lyrical and laced with longing.
Urdu literature, widely known for its poetry, has some powerful novels that are largely overlooked. Umrao Jaan has had its moment on screen and many other Urdu novels, equally cinematic, are waiting for their big screen debut. So, as we swoon once more over the song, Dil cheez kya hai, here are some must-read Urdu books.
A nation on the brink of change. A woman trying to find herself in the chaos. As India battles for independence, Shamman, a young woman, breaks away from purdah and dives into politics. But her passion for her country's independence is entangled with her love for an Irish journalist. With wit and honesty, Chughtai shows a woman's inner rebellion through love and the tug of war between desire and duty. A bold and way ahead of its time story.
What happens when the world you belong to begins to disappear? In Basti, Zakir drifts between memory and reality, love and loss. Cities collapse and nations fracture around him. Intizar Hussain paints a haunting portrait of dislocation of home, time, identity and faith. Very detailed and very introspective. Basti is perfect for a slow, dreamlike cinematic adaptation. The kind that stays with you long after the screen fades.
Naim rises from a peasant's son to a war hero. He marries into privilege. But none of it saves him from the weight of history. His love with Azra falters. His ideals collapse. His homeland becomes unfamiliar. What begins as a story of hope takes a twisted turn. The Weary Generations is a powerful tale. A love story between two very different people, just like the uneasy relationship between the British and their empire. A novel that aches to be adapted for the screen.
Inside the walls of a haveli, a young woman watches the world fall apart. In The Women's Courtyard, Aliya grows up in a divided household full of secrets and sacrifices. This book shows what Partition looked like from the inside. From kitchens, balconies and broken dreams. As the men chase politics and ideals, the women are left to bear the cost. It's political and it's personal. This is a story that belongs on screen, told through the eyes of women holding everything together as it all falls apart.

When Saroja Devi called MGR ‘anbu daivam' while talking about their bond; revealed why she never remarried after husband's early demise

With the passing of B Saroja Devi, South Indian cinema has lost one of its most cherished silver screen icons. At the same time, her demise has also taken away a major part of the legacy of actor-turned-politician MG Ramachandran (MGR). Interestingly, MGR and Saroja Devi were one of Indian cinema's most iconic on-screen pairs, often mentioned alongside other legendary duos like Raj Kapoor–Nargis Dutt, Dilip Kumar–Vyjayanthimala and Prem Nazir–Sheela. Besides sharing the screen in films like Nadodi Mannan (1958), Paasam (1962), Deiva Thai (1964), En Kadamai (1964), Thaayin Madiyil (1964), Panakkara Kudumbam (1964), Enga Veettu Pillai (1965), Nadodi (1966), Anbe Vaa (1966), Naan Aanaiyittal (1966) and Arasa Kattalai (1967), among others, Saroja Devi also held immense respect for MGR. According to The Hindu, although the two actors had a falling-out in 1967 due to a misunderstanding and never worked together again, their respect for each other remained unchanged. In fact, Saroja Devi once referred to MGR as her 'anbu daivam', underscoring the deep admiration she had for MGR. 'When he introduced me in Nadodi Mannan, I was so naïve. He took care of me so well and used to give advice and tips while acting. After that, we have acted together in several films. Without MGR, there's no Saroja Devi!' she shared during a 2016 conversation with Deccan Chronicle. Recalling her visits to MGR's famous house, Ramavaram Thottam, Saroja said: 'I have gone to his house several times and had food there. The house used to be always cool with its red oxide flooring. There won't be a separate dining table, and there will be a long bench instead. I consider it a temple and believe that MGR still lives there'. During the same conversation, B Saroja Devi also revealed why she did not remarry after the sudden demise of her husband, Shri Harsha, an engineer by profession. They tied the knot in 1967 in an arranged marriage ceremony and were together until Harsha passed away in 1986. 'After my husband's demise at a young age, a lot of people told me to remarry. I said 'no' and I couldn't think of anyone else in his place. I was confident that I could manage my life without a male companion,' she added. Saroja Devi passed away at the age of 87 on Monday following an age-related illness. She breathed her last at her residence in Malleswaram, a neighbourhood in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

MS Dhoni surprises fans in this ₹72K shirt that's utterly ‘Jethalal-Coded'

(Image Credits: Instagram) MS Dhoni's signature style isn't about following trends, it's rooted in self-assured comfort and functionality. Prioritising practicality, Captain Cool is never seen compromising on a touch of understated elegance. This unique blend has made him a modern-day style icon, and we couldn't agree more. But his latest look definitely turned heads and raised a few eyebrows with fans jokingly calling his new avatar 'Jethalal Gada-coded.' Dhoni wore a navy blue half-sleeve shirt crafted from luxurious silk, featuring a crisp collared neckline and a button-down front that added a polished yet playful touch. (Image Credits: Instagram) What really grabbed attention, though, was the shirt's quirky print, which left the internet in splits. The design showcased musical notes scattered across the fabric, with a bold piano key motif on the chest spelling out the brand's name. This unexpected artistic detail didn't quite sit well with fans, many of whom felt it looked like something straight out of Jethalal Gada's wardrobe, the beloved character from the Indian sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. He completed the look with a pair of blue-washed denim jeans that added a relaxed, casual edge, and a sleek silver watch that brought just the right amount of luxe to the ensemble. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ce Lundi, l'alarme Verisure à 199€ HT au lieu de 999€ HT Verisure J'en profite Undo (Image Credits: Instagram) As soon as the pictures surfaced online, social media lit up with reactions. And in classic internet fashion, a user quipped, 'That hairstyle is Trump-coded.' 5 street fashion trends that have been making waves in India That said, MS Dhoni's style has always been more than just what he wears, it's a reflection of his calm, composed, and focused personality, much like his cricketing legacy.
