Run ends for Delhi auto driver who staged breakdowns to rob passengers
According to the police, the accused, Wasim, 49, would pick up passengers from the Sarai Kale Khan bus stand and then pretend that his auto rickshaw had broken down halfway through the journey. A couple of other auto drivers would follow closely behind, said Sanjeev Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime.
The auto drivers would offer Wasim's passengers help, and squeeze them between the fake passengers, said the police. In the meantime, Wasim would allegedly steal things from their bags as they shifted from one auto to another. They would realise they had been robbed only after reaching their destinations, the police said.
Wasim's activities came to light after he allegedly robbed a couple of jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh.
'A couple boarded the auto of the accused from the Sarai Kale Khan Bus Terminal on the morning of June 27. He stopped his auto midway on the pretext of a breakdown and called his associates, who were already following him in another auto, with two of them sitting behind posing as passengers,' DCP Yadav said.
As the couple moved to the other auto, Wasim allegedly opened their bag and stole jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh. The couple, realising they had been cheated, approached the police.
On July 12, a team led by Arvind Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anti Robbery and Snatching Cell, Crime Branch, received a tip-off that Wasim, who has eight cases against him, was in Sarai Kale Khan, looking to execute a similar robbery. The team acted swiftly and arrested him.
Although the police recovered Rs 11,000 from him, interrogation is ongoing to find the couple's jewellery. Wasim's associates are in hiding, and efforts are being made to locate them, the police said.
'Wasim is an active member of a gang that targets passengers from the different bus terminals of Delhi during the early hours. He is a declared bad character at the Gandhi Nagar police station,' DCP Yadav said.

Bank officer held for 27L fraud
Lucknow: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the UP Police on Monday arrested Chheda Lal Anuragi, former bank officer, accused of orchestrating Rs 27 lakh fraud by opening fake accounts in collusion with bank staff and others. He was arrested in Agra where he was posted as branch manager at Indian Bank, Holipura. EOW said that the case dates back to 2006, when Anuragi served as retail banking officer at the Allahabad Bank branch in Atarra, Banda. He along with other officials allegedly opened two fraudulent accounts using forged documents and IDs. Similar fake accounts were opened in Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Using these fake accounts, chequebooks were issued and account payee cheques were deposited at Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch. Courier stafffalsely cleared these cheques, allowing payment of large sums. Investigations revealed that the original accounts held only nominal balances (as little as Rs 1,000–2,000), yet multiple high-value cheques were cleared. This coordinated fraud led to the illegal withdrawal of around Rs 27 lakh from Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch, causing significant financial loss. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Burglary at two Army officers' residences in high security zone
Lucknow: Two senior Army officers fell prey to burglaries in MRA Vihar Govt Housing Colony, raising concerns over safety in high security zone. The thefts took place on July 11 while both officers were away on leave. Upon returning, they discovered forced entry into their houses-- House Nos. 15B and 14B-- and missing valuables, including jewellery and cash. Colonel Hari Kumar Gupta, posted at Base Hospital, Lucknow, was on leave from June 15 to July 14. On July 11, his domestic help called him to inform him about the theft. Gupta rushed back from Gorakhpur the next morning and found the door's latch removed and rooms ransacked. A gold necklace set and approximately Rs 70,000 in cash were reported stolen. He also discovered that the neighbouring house had been similarly broken into. Major Debashish Mohan Kapoor, residing next door at 14B, returned from leave on the same day after being informed by his aide about the broken lock. Kapoor found his cupboard broken and several items missing: two gold chains, six silver toe rings, a silver anklet and Rs 1,000 cash. "Both FIRs were filed on July 13 at Alambagh police station. S-I Dinesh Singh has been assigned to investigate both incidents," said SHO Alambagh Subhash Chandra.
