Charlotte reacts as CIAA stiff-arms bid

Miami Herald27-05-2025
The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) has issued a statement following the CIAA's decision not to consider Charlotte as a host city for its men's and women's basketball tournaments from 2027 through 2029.
"We have been informed by the CIAA that Charlotte will not be considered as a host city for the upcoming tournament cycle," the CRVA said. "While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we are proud of the strong, collaborative bid submitted by the City of Charlotte, the CRVA, and the Charlotte Sports Foundation."
The CIAA Tournament, which called Charlotte home from 2006 to 2020, relocated to Baltimore in 2021. It will remain there through at least 2029, following the latest extension. The Queen City's bid focused on its evolving stature as a major event destination, strong hospitality sector, and proven history with the event.
A key issue in the decision was scheduling. When the CIAA requested 2027 dates in early 2025, key venues in the were already booked due to prior commitments. The CRVA noted that this reflected the city's continued rise as a sought-after host for major events.
Despite the scheduling challenge, officials emphasized that their proposal highlighted the city's growth and readiness to once again embrace the tournament.
"This effort showcased the evolution of our city, the strength of our venues, and the vibrancy of our hospitality community," the CRVA said.
While disappointed, the CRVA remains hopeful for future opportunities. "We remain optimistic that Charlotte will have the opportunity to welcome the tournament back in the future."
As the CIAA continues its run in Baltimore, Charlotte continues to look ahead, aiming to remain a player in hosting large-scale sporting and cultural events.

HBCU picks up championship coach as offensive coordinator

Tennessee State University alumnus Shannon Harris made history this summer. As interim head coach, he led the DC Defenders to a dominant 58–34 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the UFL Championship Game on June 14, 2025, securing the franchise's first UFL title. It was the first time an HBCU graduate coached a professional football team to a championship. Now Harris is listed on the Tennessee State University athletics website as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. A former quarterback for TSU in the early 2000s, Harris stepped into the interim head coach role on March 22, 2025. That change followed Reggie Barlow's departure from the Defenders to become TSU's new head coach. Despite the late-season transition, Harris guided the Defenders to a 6–4 regular-season record. He then led the team through the playoffs and claimed the championship. In recognition of his leadership, Harris earned the 2025 UFL Coach of the Year Award, officially named the Buddy Teevens Award. He became the first HBCU alumnus to receive the honor, marking a major milestone in HBCU representation in professional football. Now back at TSU, Harris joins the staff in a key leadership role. His return is a full-circle moment. Along with playing for the Tigers, he has coached at Virginia State, Alcorn State, Alabama State, and Tennessee State. Harris brings championship experience and deep Tiger pride to the program. His presence strengthens TSU's mission to develop an explosive offense. With his leadership, Tennessee State University football looks to rise in the Ohio Valley Conference and beyond. Essence Brings HBCU Classic to Nation's Oldest CFB Stadium

Labor Day Weekend 2025 won't just mark the return of college football. It'll signal the birth of something historic. For the first time ever, an HBCU football classic will be held in Boston. And not just anywhere in the city. Inside Harvard Stadium, the oldest college football stadium in the country. The inaugural ESSENCE Kickoff Classic will feature Morehouse College facing off against Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), delivering a powerful season opener and a cultural homecoming on Ivy League turf. This year's event is a bold elevation from last fall's Morehouse vs. JCSU showdown. The game was featured in season two of HBCU Gameday's Brick x Brick docuseries. That episode gave fans a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at two historic programs giving their all for an early-season win. But in 2025, it's getting bigger. Brick x Brick will return with a special episode dedicated to the Kickoff Classic. The episode hopes to go behind the scenes to show what happens when an HBCU game moves from the South to the Ivy League. "The ESSENCE Kickoff Classic is more than a game-a cultural statement," said Michele Ghee, Chief Content Officer of ESSENCE Ventures. "By bringing HBCU football to Boston for the first time. We're not only honoring the rich legacy of our institutions. We're creating space for Black excellence to thrive in new places." Boston, long seen as a hub for higher education and equity-driven innovation, is embracing its role as host city with open arms. "We are proud to bring the spirit of HBCUs to Harvard Stadium and look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, highlighting the city's commitment to inclusion and cultural celebration. The Classic is more than 60 minutes of football-it's an all-out weekend experience. Expect a citywide celebration packed with music, community activations, career fairs, step shows, and-of course-the unmatched energy of HBCU marching bands. Event Co-Founder Derrick Brown summed it up best. "The Classic isn't just a game - it's a citywide celebration of culture, community, and Boston's bold commitment to inclusivity." From the tailgate to the halftime show, this event is meant to fuse the legacy of HBCUs with Boston's future-forward thinking, making it both a tribute and a trailblazer. ESSENCE, the iconic platform dedicated to Black women and communities. Searheads an event supported by MeetBoston, the city's tourism hub, and Campus Rise, a mission-driven platform helping underrepresented students thrive. This partnership ensures that the Classic won't just be seen-it will be felt. Harvard Stadium has seen its share of historic football moments over the decades. But this will be the first time its end zones ring out with the sound of a drumline, the stomp of a step team, and the roar of fans proudly reppin' their HBCUs.
