Bangalore University Dalit professors allege caste bias, threaten to quit: Report
In a strongly worded letter addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Jayakara Shetty, the professors said they were being systematically sidelined and denied recognition for their contributions to university administration, the report added.
The letter, dated July 2 and signed by ten senior professors currently holding key administrative positions, said that despite years of service in both academic and administrative capacities, they have been given only 'supervisory' roles without actual authority or acknowledgement. They described this as a 'discriminatory policy' that targets Dalit faculty members.

According to the publication, the professors also noted that the university had earlier provided them with earned leave (EL) encashment and compensation for their administrative duties, benefits that have now been discontinued without explanation.
Repeated appeals and representations to the university, they said, have gone unanswered.
The group emphasised that their move is not just a personal protest, but a collective stand against what they called 'systemic exclusion' and denial of fair entitlements.
'We are working in statutory positions without full charge and without any earned leave benefits, despite putting in significant time and effort,' one of the professors told The Indian Express, requesting anonymity. 'There's been no response to our letters. This is clearly a systemic effort to marginalise Dalit faculty.'
University response
In response, the university, in a communication seen by The Indian Express, acknowledged the contributions of faculty serving as Coordinators, Directors, Special Officers, and Chairs of Study Centres. These roles, the university said, are recognised as 'essential services' equivalent to department chairpersons, and carry similar levels of accountability.
However, the communication explained that in some departments, the position of Head has not been formally sanctioned due to the lack of approved bylaws. Until those bylaws are amended, the university said it is utilising the services of Coordinating Officers in these roles.

Mumbai-based influencer and nail artist Rajshree More has filed a police complaint against Raheel Sheikh, son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) vice president Javed Sheikh, accusing him of ramming her car multiple times and threatening her while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The incident reportedly took place late Sunday night when More was travelling from Goregaon to Andheri. In her statement to the police and NDTV, More claimed Raheel was 'drunk and half-naked' when he repeatedly hit her vehicle and hurled abuses at her in the presence of police officials. In a video posted to her Instagram account, More described the ordeal, saying she was being followed and intentionally targeted. 'The driver of the SUV was ramming my car repeatedly. The first time, I thought it was a mistake. But it kept happening. I turned into a narrow lane near my house and realised I was being targeted. I asked my driver if our doors were locked. When I saw two constables nearby, I called them for help—they got into my car. Even then, the other car rammed us again,' she told NDTV. More further alleged that after police intervened, Raheel Sheikh began abusing her and misbehaving with the officers, invoking his father's political influence. 'He was drunk and half-naked. His pants were slipping off. He didn't remember his clothes but remembered who his father was. He started abusing me, threatening me, saying I would have to pay for this,' she said. Rajshree More is a beauty influencer and entrepreneur who runs a nail art studio in Lokhandwala. She has over 31,000 followers on Instagram and often posts videos with Bollywood celebrities. More was recently at the centre of another controversy after posting a video questioning the push to enforce Marathi language usage in Maharashtra. In the clip, she argued that instead of imposing the language, local Marathi residents should focus on working harder. She also suggested that Mumbai's development would suffer if migrant workers left the city. The video sparked a backlash from MNS supporters, and a complaint was filed against her at the Oshiwara police station. More later deleted the video and issued a public apology. Following the Sunday night incident, an FIR has been filed against Raheel Sheikh under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including: Section 79 (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) Section 281 (rash and negligent driving) Sections 125 and 185 (driving under the influence) As of now, no arrest has been made. This latest episode comes in the backdrop of heightened tension between Rajshree More and MNS supporters, with More previously calling out the party for allegedly beating a shopkeeper over the language issue. She had publicly stated that the Marathi language should not be imposed by force.

Key accused in Saharanpur property dealer murder nabbed in encounter
After a six-month-long manhunt across five states, Saharanpur police on Monday arrested the main accused in the murder of property dealer Suresh Rana, who was gunned down in January this year. The accused, Armaan alias Deepu alias Sippy, a sharpshooter with a bounty of ₹1 lakh on his head, was injured in an encounter on Khajuri-Akbarpur Road in Saharanpur, with bullets striking both his legs. Two of his accomplices managed to escape under cover of darkness. (Pic for representation) To apprehend the elusive shooter, five police teams scoured Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Bihar, collectively covering over 2 lakh kilometres in search operations. 'Sippy was constantly changing locations to dodge the police dragnet. His tech-savvy nature made it even more challenging,' said senior superintendent of police Ashish Tiwari. The SSP revealed that Sippy is an expert in evading digital surveillance. He made calls using international numbers, often relying on the hotspots of unsuspecting passersby to avoid leaving digital footprints. He deliberately avoided using Wi-Fi or broadband services to prevent tracking. The accused has serious criminal cases registered against him under various charges, including extortion and drug trafficking (NDPS Act), across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Deputy superintendent of police (circle officer Sada) Manoj Yadav said the surveillance team received a tip-off about Sippy's presence along with his accomplices. When the police intercepted them during checking, Sippy opened fire. In retaliatory action, bullets struck him in both legs, and he was arrested on the spot. His two associates fled the scene. Meanwhile, Pramod alias Ramkaran, the alleged mastermind of the killing, is currently in Malaysia, and police teams are working on securing his extradition. Rana murder case The murder took place on the night of January 2, 2025, at Suresh Rana's residence in the Old Vegetable Market area of Saharanpur. Investigations revealed that the murder was plotted by Pramod alias Ramkaran, a former associate of Suresh, who had left for Malaysia a week before the killing. The motive reportedly stemmed from a ₹40–50 lakh land deal dispute and personal humiliation after being slapped by Suresh. According to police, Pramod arranged the murder contract from Malaysia, hiring shooters from Rajound village in Haryana — identified as Vikas alias Vicky, Somveer alias Monu, Gaddoo, and CP. The contract was worth ₹10 lakh. Pramod coordinated the hit via WhatsApp calls and messages. On the day of the murder, Somveer and Vikas stood guard outside the house while CP and Gaddoo entered the premises with country-made pistols and fired seven bullets at Suresh, killing him on the spot. Police had earlier arrested Vikas, but the other accused remained absconding until Monday's breakthrough. With Sippy now in custody, police are hopeful of making further arrests and unearthing more about the international dimension of the contract killing. Efforts are underway to bring mastermind Pramod back from Malaysia.

2 held for duping Gr Noida man of ₹4.50L by posing as women on social media
Greater Noida: The accused, both residents of Delhi, allegedly posed as a woman on social media, proposed the victim for marriage, and siphoned off the money on pretext of family emergency in multiple instalments. (Representational image) Two Delhi-based men have been arrested on Sunday eveningfor allegedly duping a 25-year-old man of ₹4.5 lakh after befriending him on a social media platform by posing as a woman and her brother, police said on Monday. The accused are Amit Kumar alias Aarav, 23, and Mohammad Rizwan, 24, both residents of Delhi. They allegedly posed as a woman on social media, proposed the victim for marriage, and siphoned off the money on pretext of family emergency in multiple instalments. The victim — who did not wish to be identified — is a resident of Surajpur. 'Around two years ago, I came into contact with a woman who identified herself as Mansi through a social media platform. After 10 months of regular chatting, she added me on WhatsApp and proposed marriage,' his complaint mentioned. 'Following the proposal, she started demanding money, and I transferred more than ₹3 lakh in multiple payments. Later, she told me that her brother wanted to talk to me,' read the FIR. According to police, Aarav posed as the woman's brother and told the victim that he had agreed to the marriage and expressed his desire to meet. 'Aarav, along with his accomplice Rizwan, went to meet the victim at his home in Surajpur and finalised the marriage. Later, they began threatening him, alleging that he had engaged in inappropriate conversations with his sister, and extorted ₹50,000 from him, threatening to file a complaint,' Vinod Kumar, Surajpur station house officer said. Police said the victim lost ₹4.5 lakh in total over the last two years through multiple transactions. He paid the last extortion amount of ₹20,000 on July 4. When he finally became suspicious, he checked the UPI number and learned that no UPI account was registered under the name 'Mansi'. An FIR under sections related to cheating, extortion, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and IT Act, was registered at Surajpur police station on July 5. The accused were then arrested, and police are now checking their past criminal records.
