Committed to increasing footpaths: BBMP chief commissioner Rao

Hans India5 days ago
Bengaluru: BBMPchief commissioner Maheshwar Rao on Saturday reaffirmed the civic body's commitment to improving walkability by expanding pedestrian infrastructure. He was speaking at the launch of a report on Saturday that detailed two years of collaborative efforts to transform one of the city's most critical urban corridors—the 7.5 km stretch of the Inner Ring Road, from Indiranagar to Koramangala.
A project by the Bangalore Political Action Committee (B PAC), an NGO that aims to improve governance in Bengaluru, the report titled 'IRR Street: Standstill to Active' showcases the methodology, recommendations, implementation status, and impact of citizen-led collaborations. 'If you increase the footpaths, you will definitely increase the carrying capacity. It will reduce many other issues and promote safety. This is something we are committed to,' added Rao, who also promised to allocate sufficient funds to support walkability initiatives. 'We believe that creating people-friendly streets requires ongoing collaboration, feedback, and accountability,' said Revathy Ashok, managing trustee and honorary CEO of B PAC. According to her, since June 2023, B PAC has worked closely with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, the Bengaluru Traffic Police, and the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited to improve bus reliability, walkability, and road safety through a data-driven and participatory process.
'This effort is not just about fixing one road—it's about proving that data, design, and dialogue can reshape public spaces to be safer, cleaner, and more accessible. We thank all our partners and volunteers and urge more Bengalureans to join us in making streets across the city truly people-centric,' she said.
As part of the launch—which was attended by key figures in the civic volunteering space—B PAC also organised panel discussions with dignitaries and government representatives to discuss the next steps for implementing the recommendations outlined in the IRR report. According to the report, the 7.5-kilometre stretch of the IRR—from Indiranagar KFC Junction to Madiwala Masjid in Koramangala—has long struggled with traffic congestion, road safety issues, inadequate pedestrian access, missing crossings, and poor bus frequency. The IRR serves as a major connector between Koramangala, Domlur, Ejipura, and Indiranagar. It also connects to Indiranagar Metro Station, which sees the second-highest footfall in the city after Majestic. Some achievements of the citizen-led initiative include the addition of nine buses to the MF5 route (Indiranagar–Koramangala), resulting in 58 additional trips. Over 4,300 tonnes of debris, 130 construction barricades, and 129 tonnes of garbage were cleared from medians and footpaths along the stretch. To improve drainage and mitigate flooding, the report recommends constructing shoulder drains with kerb inlets (a component of the stormwater drainage system) every 5–7 metres—especially in flood-prone zones—instead of the current 30-metre intervals being implemented on site.

Who are the 7 Indians Singapore President invited after they rescued woman from sinkhole? All about them

Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has invited the seven Indian migrant workers who saved a woman driver from a sinkhole. They have been invited to the Istana presidential palace on August 3. The Indian workers who have been invited to the presidential palace are: Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, 47, and his co-workers Velmurugan Muthusamy, 27, Poomalai Saravanan, 28, Ganesan Veerasekar, 32, Bose Ajithkumar, 26, Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, 25, and Sathapillai Rajendran, 56. Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah is a site foreman whose quick thinking saved the woman. Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah and his colleagues were working at a PUB worksite near the One Amber condominium when the incident happened. The migrant workers heard a loud sound and rushed out of the site to see a massive sinkhole on Tanjong Katong Road South. They also saw a black car which had fallen into the sinkhole and a woman trying to come out of it. A concrete component in the shaft "failed" at around 5.50 pm last Saturday, according to the national water agency. Around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the adjacent road, causing a car to fall in. Subbiah then instructed three of his colleagues to throw a nylon rope to the woman and pull her out. One of them offered to go in and help her climb, but Subbiah opted for the rope, reasoning that the rescuer might not be able to get out either. The woman was out of the sinkhole in three-five minutes. Meanwhile, 1,639 donors have contributed SGD72,241 for the seven heroes, according to a Facebook page of the ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a Singapore charity. Rice conservator Deva Rao asks farmers to take up paddy cultivation as sub-profession to save as many varieties

Octogenarian B.K. Deva Rao, winner of Plant Genome Saviour Farmers' Reward for 2020-21 and conservator of over 300 varieties of rice/paddy on Thursday asked farmers to save as many rice varieties by taking up paddy cultivation as a sub-profession. Speaking at the Mangaluru Press Club Guest of Honour programme Mr. Rao, 81, said that the government's support to paddy cultivation is not enough. He said that paddy fields acted as rainwater harvesting systems and helped to re-charge water bodies and groundwater. 'They kept streams, rivers and rivulets alive,' he said. 'Local rice varieties have rich nutritional values. In addition, some varieties like 'atikaya' and 'atikaraya' have medicinal values,' said Mr. Rao, who has been saving the varieties by cultivating them every year on his about five acre plot organically, said. Mr. Rao said that the number of local varieties of rice in the country has come down from about two lakh to 25,000. He, who is also the conservator of 80 local mango and 50 jackfruit varieties, said that the government should ensure that paddy growers got good price for their produce. If the price is very encouraging it will prompt more farmers to take up paddy cultivation, he said. Mr. Rao stressed on the need to go for organic method of cultivation to retain the nutritional values of rice. He said that area under paddy around his Mittabagilu village, near Ujire, in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada has come down from 200 acres to about 10 acres now. His son B.K. Parameshwar Rao, an electrical engineer-turned-farmer, who has been helping father in saving the varieties said: 'The cost of cultivation varied from ₹120 to ₹150 a kg, yet we are selling rice below the cultivation cost.' 'Retaining the top soil is very important in paddy cultivation,' Mr. Parameshwar Rao said. Mr. Parameshwar Rao said that the Forest Department should cultivate wild fruits, tubers and other crops within forest area to prevent wild animals from attacking the crops of farmers. Press Club president P.B. Harish Rai and others felicitated Mr. Rao on the occasion.

Donations pour in for 7 Indians who saved woman from sinkhole, Singapore President to host migrant workers

The seven migrant workers from India, who rescued a woman driver from a car in a sinkhole in Singapore last Saturday, have been invited to meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Istana presidential palace. The workers have been commended by the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group, a division that aims to support migrant workers' well-being. (AFP) The President's Office has invited the Indian workers involved in the sinkhole rescue, along with the other guests, to the Istana Open House on Sunday (August 3), reported Channel News Asia. They are: Site foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, 47, and his co-workers Velmurugan Muthusamy, 27, Poomalai Saravanan, 28, Ganesan Veerasekar, 32, Bose Ajithkumar, 26, Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, 25, and Sathapillai Rajendran, 56. "There will be opportunities for interaction between the guests - including the migrant workers – and the president during the Istana open house," the President's Office said. Meanwhile, 1,639 donors have contributed SGD72,241 for the seven heroes, according to a Facebook page of the ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a Singapore charity looking after migrant workers here. "Thank you, Singapore for your overwhelming kindness and generosity to the brave sinkhole rescue migrant worker heroes!" IRR said on its Facebook page, adding that the funds raised will be divided between the workers involved and transferred to their bank accounts. "We will be hosting a meet and greet with these workers as soon as we are able to arrange it," IRR said. The site where the sinkhole opened up along Tanjong Katong Road South, a thoroughfare along the east coast of the island state, is adjacent to an active Public Utilities Board (PUB) worksite involving the construction of a 16-metre-deep shaft to connect three existing sewer lines. A concrete component in the shaft "failed" at around 5.50 pm last Saturday, according to the national water agency. Around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the adjacent road, causing a car to fall in. Subbiah's quick thinking, along with that of his fellow workers, helped pull the woman to safety with a rope within minutes. Their actions have since drawn widespread praise, with President Tharman also acknowledging their bravery. "Bravo! Thanks to the migrant workers led by foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah. They moved quickly and with courage," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday evening. The workers have been commended by the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group, a division that aims to support migrant workers' well-being. The ACE Coin, given to each of the workers, is a "token of appreciation" presented to migrant worker volunteers and partners who have made meaningful contributions towards supporting and caring for the migrant worker community. "It is also awarded to migrant workers who demonstrate courage, initiative or public spiritedness in times of need," the broadsheet had the Ministry as saying. While there has been some discussion on social media about whether the coins were an appropriate way to recognise the migrant workers' heroic act, MOM said it was "encouraged" to receive feedback calling for more forms of appreciation.
