K-pop's ‘Face Genius' Cha Eun-woo gets his marching orders, to enlist July 28

Yahoo31-05-2025
SEOUL, May 31 — K-pop heartthrob Cha Eun-woo is swapping the stage spotlight for military stripes this July, as his agency Fantagio confirmed on Thursday that the 28-year-old singer-actor will officially enlist in the South Korean army on July 28.
Known for his breakout role in True Beauty and as the 'Face Genius' visual of Astro, Cha will be joining the army's military band.
Fantagio shared in a statement: 'Cha Eun-woo, who recently applied to join the military band, received the final acceptance letter from the Military Manpower Administration today. He will enter the training camp on July 28 to receive basic military training, and then perform his duties in the military band.'
The bittersweet announcement marks a significant pause in the star's ever-rising career, though fans — affectionately called Arohas — have known this moment would come.
Military service is mandatory for all able-bodied South Korean men, typically lasting 18 to 21 months.
Fantagio took the moment to thank fans for their unwavering support, saying: 'We would like to express our gratitude to the Arohas who have always given endless love to Astro... We ask everyone to give Cha Eun-woo strong support so that he can faithfully perform his duties and return in good health.'
The agency also confirmed that his enlistment details will remain confidential to 'prevent safety accidents due to crowding.'
Before the uniforms and bugles, though, fans can expect one last emotional hurrah.
In June, Astro will reunite on stage at South Korea's Inspire Arena for a two-night concert, Stargraphy.
The event is already shaping up to be a momentous send-off, especially with former member Rocky — who departed the group in 2023 — rejoining them for the show.
Adding to his sentimental swan song, Cha also made a brief but memorable appearance in IU's recent music video 'A Beautiful Person'.

Robots replace hotel check-in staff — and a tourist freaks out when they talk back: ‘Don't look at me'

Is it artificial inn-telligence? Machines are seemingly rendering us obsolete in every sector, from manufacturing to the restaurant industry. In a recent example, an Argentinian tourist was taken aback after discovering that her hotel in Japan had replaced its receptionists with talking robots, as seen in a dystopian TikTok video with more than 845,000 views. 'The receptionists are robots,' wailed the traveler — who goes by @manuenalemania — in the clip, before panning to the cybernetic clerks, who stand stiffly behind the counter in white outfits and pillbox hats like something out of 'Blade Runner.' 'Don't look at me, don't look at me, don't look at me,' frets the TikTokker as one of the robo-receptionists greets her. At one point, it even wishes her a 'delightful stay.' She was reportedly staying at a Henn na Hotel — 'Henn na' translates to 'strange' in Japanese — in Tokyo, a chain that enlists a variety of humanoid hospitality bots to cater to guests, The Travel reported. The first Henn na opened in Nagasaki with the goal of revolutionizing the hospitality industry by providing visitors with more expedient service. There are now more than 20 branches of the futuristic inns, whose lobbies are staffed by either humanoid or — wait for it — dinosaur droids. Other high-tech amenities include interactive holograms and RoBoHoN, a mobile robot assistant. While the intent was to enhance the check-in experience, Manu found the experience extremely unsettling. 'You scare me a lot,' she says to one of the automatons while checking in. She scans her passport at the automated kiosk and inputs the dates of her stay, after which the machine deposits a key card. That's when the robot addresses her. 'Your check-in is now complete,' the droid rigidly declares. 'We hope you have a delightful stay at our hotel.' It then bows, prompting the freaked-out Manu to exclaim, 'Ay noooooooo!' Commenters were similarly creeped out by the check-in droids, whose role appears to be purely cosmetic. 'You study hospitality for this,' said one, commenting on the phenomenon of robots replacing human staff. 'At least they didn't treat you badly,' said another, while others compared the bots to something out of the sci-fi thriller series 'Black Mirror.' Coincidentally, Henna has notably 'furloughed' over half of its 240 robotic staffers due to operational challenges, including malfunctions and a failure to meet guest expectations, which ironically created more work for their flesh-and-blood counterparts, the Travel reported. Many customers claimed that the robot receptionists would often misinterpret commands, highlighting the limitations of this so-called high-tech hospitality. As such, Henna has hired more human employees to pick up the slack.

Daniel Calvert Would Love It If You Were Hungry When You Visit Sézanne

Chef Daniel Calvert serves French-influenced tasting menus at Sézanne in Tokyo. During the week of this year's World's 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony, Daniel Calvert of Tokyo's Sézanne was at a Meet the Chefs event to discuss how dining preferences are shifting. Sézanne, of course, is one of the world's most celebrated restaurants. In 2024, it was named the Best Restaurant in Asia. And in this year's list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants, Sézanne rose from No. 15 to No. 7. At this point in his storied career, at the helm of the three-Michelin-starred Sézanne in the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, Calvert knows he's already conquered the mountaintop. Like many of the chefs on the World's 50 Best Restaurants circuit, he's ready to speak candidly. So I ask if he's really seeing dining preferences change at Sézanne or if it's still more about guests submitting to a bucket-list experience. 'Most people come to us, and they're open to what we're going to do, rather than trying to change it into their own experience,' he says. 'We don't accept dietary restrictions. We don't accept any special requests. So they kind of have to be submissive to that. I think that's the sustainable way to cook. If we start opening ourselves up to allergies and restrictions and likes and dislikes, then it's not really what we do. But I think there's a big problem with people who are overindulgent.' Even when guests plan a trip around a bucket-list experience, they're often looking to check off many other things on other lists. (As a bang-bang instigator who has often planned multiple dinners in one night, I'm as guilty of this as anyone.) 'Especially when people come to Japan and Tokyo, they want to eat in a million different restaurants within a short period of time,' Calvert says. 'So I think they've forgotten what it's like to be hungry. Sometimes people come for lunch, but then they're going to another restaurant for dinner, so they don't want to eat too much. They just want to taste things, and I think that's not really acceptable. I think that people who are dining too much have been spoiled, and that's changing people's preferences.' For Calvert, it's about wanting guests to have an optimal experience. And the point he's making is that this isn't just in the hands of the restaurant. Sézanne riffs on a tarte tartin with Japanese ginger. 'If you haven't eaten a fine dining meal in a whole week and you are really ready for your meal, your excitement level is higher than someone who just had dinner wherever last night,' he says. "I think, of course, that it's down to the chef and the restaurant to provide a great experience. But I think the guests have to play their part in not over-spoiling themselves and being excited.' Calvert understands that a lot of overindulgence is driven by FOMO-inducing social media. But obviously, lists like World's 50 Best Restaurants also create FOMO and encourage guests to stack fine-dining meals when they visit certain cities. 'There's a certain group of restaurants that everybody wants to try, but then there's so many other restaurants that don't get as much attention that are also worthy,' he says. 'I think that's a fundamental issue with the [World's 50 Best Restaurants] list itself. There shouldn't be a restaurant that's on this list for 10 years. It doesn't make any sense. I think we need to be more open to other restaurants.' Calvert thinks about when he cooked at Hong Kong's Belon. 'We were empty most nights,' he says. 'Four covers on a Saturday. It was my first head chef job, and we were dying because we had certain people who enjoyed it but it was not commercially popular. We were very close to closing the restaurant, but then we got the 50 Best and it turned my career around. So who am I to keep staying on this list when there's other people who need this as well? Some of the restaurants who have deserved to be on the list probably closed. So it's up to you, the media, to put them on the map. like you did to me and not just keep voting for me.' He's making some good points. It's exhilarating when you find a bucket-list meal that hasn't received the spotlight yet. And you'll enjoy it more if you're hungry when you discover it.
