British dad breaks neck after being pushed into shallow pool at Benidorm party
Martin Bullen, 31, was at a pool party on June 10 when he claims a stranger came up and playfully pushed him into the water.
But he had no idea how shallow the water was, so when he tried to dive in, he ended up splitting his head open on the bottom.
Luckily, one of the worried partygoers who helped get him out happened to be an army medic and knew to keep him still until an ambulance arrived.
Martin, who works as a sales advisor, was then taken to a nearby hospital where he got 16 stitches for his head wound and was told he had fractured his neck in three places and broken his back.
He said: 'I was having a drink, but I had my wits about me and stuff. Somebody pushed me into the pool, and I didn't know it was a shallow pool.
'I'm thinking I'll just dive in and dive back up and my head hit the floor straight away and it split open my head.
'It was quite scary. I'll be honest, there was at one point I thought I was going to die on my own [in hospital] because I didn't know what was going on or who to talk to.'
Martin, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, added: 'I can see how it could be portrayed dead easily as a boozy Brit in Benidorm who has done this but to be honest with you, I wasn't drunk.
'It was a freak accident because I didn't know the pool was shallow.
'I'm a full-time dad and I try and work my hardest and try and bring them up the best I can do. I'm not one of those idiots – I have a lot of responsibilities, and I take pride in them.'
He explained that the trip to Benidorm with his cousins was meant to be a break from being a busy single dad.
The blow which perhaps hurt the most though, was a 'stupid' mistake he made when finalising the trip – he forgot to book travel insurance.
'It was a moment of madness [not to take out insurance],' Martin said.
'I was looking at getting it, I put it in the WhatsApp group for my cousins to get it and as I went to do mine something came up with the kids.
'Then it just slipped my mind and then I forgot all about it and didn't get it done. It was a daft mistake. I knew I needed to get it.
'I think one of the kids hurt themself outside or something and I rushed out to sort it and then I got back and got distracted.
'Failure to prepare is preparing to fail, that's the best thing I could say.'
Thankfully Martin was able to fly home on June 16 and said doctors at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan have found five fractures in his neck and back.
He said he still needs to wear a neck brace and can only walk or stand for about five minutes before he needs to sit down. More Trending
He is awaiting further scans to find out the extent of the damage and what his recovery will be like.
His dad, Scott Bullen, 63, flew out to be with him in hospital and was luckily able to help him with hospital costs but now Martin is raising money to be able to pay his dad back.
Martin said: 'I've got two boys full time on my own, luckily my dad helped me with upfront costs, which I've got to pay back because he's retired.
'I know it's going to be a long road to recovery, but I've got through the hard part, which was getting home and being around people who can support me.'

The 20-year-old, from Sandbach, Cheshire, had been on his first ever holiday without his family but disaster struck after he was not heard from for more than a decade, despite desperate pleas on both UK and Greek TV. Steven's dead body was eventually found in a well in Crete in 2017 but the circumstances around his shock death have remained a mystery - but a bombshell update could give his heartbroken family answers. It comes after a 3-year-old girl was found dead on a beach in Greece by a horrified passer-by. Steven had been out with pals on the night he went missing but he left the pub they were in by himself, before he vanished. He was last seen in another bar in Malia, Crete, asking for directions to the hotel he was staying in - Steven then walked in the wrong direction and was not seen alive again. The mystery into Steven's whereabouts continued for years and his heartbroken parents Norman and Pat, both 73, had put out a €7,000 reward for information into his disappearance. This mystery could soon be solved after the lawyer for the dead Brit, Yiannis Konstantoudakis, claimed an email about an alleged confession into Steven's apparent murder was sent to Cheshire Police last year, according to The Sun. The ex-wife of a 38-year-old Brit reportedly claimed her former partner admitted to killing Steven in a rant while high on drugs after his body was found in 2017. The ex-wife alleged her partner said he had gotten into a fight with another young man in Malia in 2005 while drunk and the victim died after being hit on the head. She also claimed her ex said he threw the dead body into a well after the alleged brawl. The woman, who has not been named, claimed she had two silver beads from a bracelet allegedly belonging to Steven, from the night he died - the victim's family has not identified the bracelet. The woman claimed her ex had a breakdown after Steven's remains were discovered and even threatened to kill himself. The family's lawyer said he was wary of her claims due to the huge gap between 2017 and now, but added the bombshell information could still be credible. The 38-year-old British man has denied any involvement in Steven's death and told British police he was not in Crete at the same time as the victim, according to local newspaper Parapolitika. Konstantoudakis said he fears the case could be closed in September, despite this alleged major update, if there are no more developments. She added that it was not unusual for people under the influence of drugs or alcohol to make revelations about their lives they wouldn't have otherwise said. The 38-year-old Brit has denied any involvement in Steven's death, according to local newspaper Parapolitika. When appearing before British authorities, he reportedly claimed he wasn't in Crete in 2005. He described his ex-wife's allegations as "lies". In 2005 there were no systematic passport checks for citizens of the European Union while Great Britain belonged to it. There is a recorded entry of the accused Brit into Greece in 2010 from the airport in Zakynthos. Steven's family were informed of the developments through their lawyer. Mr Konstantoudakis told The Sun of fears that the case could be thrown out in September if there are no major developments. Cheshire Police told The Sun it "is aware of the developments in the investigation into the death of Steven Cook". They added: "At this time, we are working closely with the Greek Authorities and Stevens family who are being supported by specialist officers."
