Jio breaks ranks with peers over 6 GHz waves for WiFi

, the country's top telecom operator, has reconciled its demands and joined the technology industry in seeking a higher power limit for Wi-Fi devices that can be used under the delicensed spectrum.

(Vi) are, however, pushing the government for more deliberations and to form a committee before taking a final decision on spectrum delicensing, they added.
The delicensing will pave the way for deployment of next-generation technologies such as
WiFi
6E and 7 in India and is seen as a big win for tech companies such as Meta, Google, Amazon and Qualcomm, experts said. This was a key demand of the tech industry to meet surging bandwidth needs at affordable rates.
While Jio too was initially against delicensing of the 6 GHz band, it has decided against opposing the government move as the same spectrum can be used for offering fixed wireless services (FWA) using equipment developed in-house. Airtel and Vi however currently do not possess such equipment.
Jio, Airtel and Vi did not respond to queries.
For the past few months, Jio has been using unlicensed band radio (UBR) equipment for providing 5G FWA services utilising the WiFi spectrum. If the Centre agrees to increase the power limits for 6 GHz, the spectrum can be used for FWA as well as WiFi services.
The technology industry wants the power levels permitted for WiFi and other devices to be used under the 6 GHz spectrum band to be reviewed and aligned with global standards, so that users can get the best performances and devices remain affordable.
As per experts, the current power levels proposed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) may limit the range and throughput of very low power devices. The DoT has proposed a maximum power spectral density (PSD) level of -5 dBm/MHz and total transmit power of 14 dBm for such devices.
The tech industry wants it to be raised to 1 dBm/MHz for very low power indoor and outdoor devices, otherwise it could have a major impact on the performance of Wi-Fi advanced applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) collectively, which demand high throughput and latency performance.
Experts say that if the power limits are not increased, it may not allow full utilisation of spectrum. They added that the 6 GHz band can offer data speeds of up to 9.6 gigabits per second (Gbps), against 1.3 Gbps in the 5 GHz band and 600 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band. Over 84 countries, including the US, UK and South Korea, have already delicensed the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi services.

In a significant move aimed at empowering women, the UP Cabinet has approved a 1% discount in stamp duty on properties valued up to Rs 1 crore, if purchased in the name of a woman. The decision was taken earlier this week during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhavan in Lucknow. Until now, the stamp duty exemption was restricted to properties worth up to Rs 10 lakh, where a maximum discount of Rs 10,000 could be availed. With the latest decision, this exemption now applies to properties worth up to Rs 1 crore, significantly expanding its scope and impact. Sharing details of the move, UP Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar said, 'The government believes this decision will help middle-class women become property owners, which will not only increase their confidence but they will also become financially more capable and respected in the society." He added that this step will further strengthen the Mission Shakti programme, which is focused on making women self-reliant and empowered. Vikas Tomar, executive president and business head at Square Yards, welcomed the decision and said it would particularly benefit the mid-segment market: 'The Uttar Pradesh government's decision to reduce stamp duty by 1% for women on property purchases up to Rs 1 crore is a positive step and will likely boost sentiment among women aspiring to own a home… With this added incentive, we're likely to see greater interest in the mid-range category across cities like Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, with more buyers moving forward with purchases under women's ownership." Vikas Bhasin, MD of Saya Group, called the move beneficial but urged the government to go further: 'Stamp duty and other levies form a significant part of home-buying costs, and any reduction helps buyers save a substantial amount of money. However, we have consistently advocated for a broader reduction—especially since it is charged in addition to GST on under-construction properties. The government should consider reducing these charges for all homebuyers to make ownership more affordable." Sahil Agarwal, CEO of Nimbus Realty, echoed a similar sentiment on the decision and said, 'It's a progressive step. At a time when interest from women buyers is steadily increasing, this rebate could tip the scale. From an industry perspective, it aligns well with the current demand wave we're witnessing in suburban NCR, which is witnessing a rise in co-owned properties and purchases by women-led households. Delhi govt files review plea in Supreme Court against blanket ban on ELVs
Delhi govt on Friday filed a review application in the Supreme Court, seeking reconsideration of the 2018 blanket ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR. Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the matter is listed for Monday. The application requests the apex court to direct the Central govt or the Commission on Air Quality Management (CAQM) to conduct a comprehensive scientific study evaluating the actual environmental benefits of the age-based ban. It also seeks assessment of the feasibility and fairness of a blanket restriction across vehicle categories and technologies, and whether the policy meaningfully contributes to air quality improvement in the NCR, compared to targeted emission-based measures. Delhi govt argued that the current system enforces collective compliance without individual assessment of pollution levels or roadworthiness. "This approach does not align with the objective of reducing pollution," the application stated, adding that the directive disproportionately affects middle-class citizens whose vehicles may be less used, well-maintained, and compliant with emission norms. The 2015 National Green Tribunal order banning such vehicles was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. However, Delhi govt now contends that the landscape has changed significantly with the introduction of Bharat Stage-VI emission standards from April 1, 2020. It noted that as of July 24, 2025, Delhi has 2.8 million BS-IV and an almost equal number of BS-VI registered vehicles. "If the 2018 order continues, roadworthy, non-polluting BS-VI vehicles may be forced off the roads in a few years without scientific justification," the petition added. It questioned the rationale behind taking even BS-IV vehicles—meeting Pollution Under Control (PUC) norms—off the roads, asserting that such decisions must be based on updated, data-driven evaluations. The application pointed out that countries like Japan, the US, and those in the EU do not impose blanket bans based solely on vehicle age. Instead, they follow nuanced, sustainable policies that assess actual emissions and focus on roadworthiness through regular testing. Delhi's review petition, settled by Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, stressed the need for a "graded, balanced and technology-driven regime" to tackle vehicular pollution. It urged for a scientific framework that accounts for individual vehicle emission data rather than broad age-based criteria. The CAQM's July 1 order denying fuel to end-of-life vehicles sparked public backlash, prompting Sirsa to request a pause in its implementation. Lieutenant governor VK Saxena later advised govt to approach the Supreme Court for a review. Following this, CAQM deferred the fuel-denial order to November 1 in high-density NCR districts and to April 1, 2026, for the rest of the region. Govt highlighted that other major pollution sources—like stubble burning, construction dust, and industrial emissions—also need to be considered. Its strict enforcement of PUC norms led to over 1.63 lakh challans in 2025 so far, up from 29,589 in 2021. It said the good AQI days increased from 159 in 2018 to 209 in 2024. Till July this year, there have been 106 such days. The robust implementation of Graded Response Plan has contributed to reducing pollution in the national capital, it said.

ANI file photo NEW DELHI: In a bold step, the Delhi Govt on Friday requested the Supreme Court to reconsider its 2018 blanket ban on plying of over 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles on the roads of entire National Capital Region saying stricter BS-VI norm compliant vehicles emit far less pollutants compared to BS-IV vehicles. It requested the SC to direct the Union govt or Air Quality Management to 'carry out a suitable broad-based, scientific study on the need for continuance of a complete ban on playing of 15 or more years old petrol and 10 or more years old diesel vehicles of all categories in NCR, imposed by the SC through its order on Oct 10, 2018'. The Delhi govt said the blanket ban, not backed by any scientific study, does not differentiate between poorly maintained, The directive to off-road vehicles purely on the basis of age disproportionately affects the middle-class population whose vehicles are less used, well-maintained, and pollution norm compliant, the govt said. 'Studies indicate that these vehicles often have significantly lower annual mileage and contribute negligibly to overall emissions,' it said. Delhi govt, through an application settled by additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati, said, 'There is a need for a graded, balanced and technology riven regime to handle vehicular pollution issue and instead of blanket ban, a scientific, data-driven framework should be developed taking into account all parameters to ascertain individual emission levels of vehicles.' Repeatedly stressing that the 2018 blanket ban order needs reconsideration, the BJP govt said vehicular pollution constitutes only one of the several sources of air-pollution, including stubble burning, biomass burning, road and construction dust, industrial emissions coupled with weather and meteorological factors and the intensity of pollution varies from season to season. Delhi govt said its transport department has strictly implemented PUC has resulted in issuance of 1,63,103 challans in the first seven months of this year, compared to 29,589 challans issued in 2021, 43,494 in 2022, 36,176 in 2023, and 68,077 in 2024. It said with the augmentation of CNG and electric buses and improvement in road infrastructure, the pollution caused by vehicles has reduced. It said the good AQI days have increased from 159 in 2018 to 209 in 2024 and good AQI days this year till July was 106. The robust implementation of Graded Response Plan (GRAP) has contributed to reducing pollution in the national capital, it said.
