Linde Announces Major U.S. Investments to Support Commercial Space Sector

Globe and Mail3 days ago
Linde (Nasdaq: LIN) today announced ambitious new investments to fuel the next frontier of space exploration. With two new long-term agreements to supply bulk industrial gases for rocket launches, Linde is strengthening its leadership in the rapidly expanding U.S. space industry.
As part of these agreements, Linde will significantly expand its industrial gases facility in Mims, Florida. This site will provide critical liquid oxygen and nitrogen to support rocket launches at nearby space facilities. The additional capacity is expected to start up in the first quarter of 2027, marking the latest phase in Linde's growth at Mims, following expansions in 2020 and 2024 driven by robust demand for industrial gases in the region.
Further amplifying its leading role in the U.S. space sector, Linde will build, own and operate a new air separation unit (ASU) in Brownsville, Texas, under a separate agreement. Expected to start up in the first quarter of 2026, this new facility will deliver liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon, addressing the needs of its customer's space operations in the region. Beyond supporting space exploration, the Brownsville ASU will enhance Linde's extensive network of industrial gas infrastructure and expand merchant capacity across Texas.
From providing liquid oxygen to the Apollo program in the 1960s to its indispensable role in modern satellite propulsion systems using rare gases, spacecraft component testing and even 3D printing of engine components, Linde has been at the heart of space exploration for more than 60 years. In 2024 alone, Linde powered over 100 successful rocket launches, ensuring the reliability of critical systems and components every step of the way.
"Space exploration is advancing rapidly, with missions growing in ambition and scale," said Sanjiv Lamba, Chief Executive Officer, Linde. "Linde is proud to support this growing sector with innovative and efficient technologies and solutions. As demand increases, we will continue investing alongside our customers and expanding our strong presence both in the southern United States and globally."

Meme stock surge underlines market froth, mostly centred on retail investors

Specialist Anthony Matesic works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Friday, April 4, 2025. NEW YORK — Massive moves in stocks such as Kohl's and Opendoor Technologies are raising questions over whether a new wave of meme stock trading is underway and what that signals about risk appetite more broadly. Benchmark equity indexes have touched record highs, cryptocurrencies are rallying, and options trading volumes have jumped, highlighting renewed signs of speculative fervor across asset classes. Much of the risk-taking behavior is being driven by retail market participants, investors said, with larger institutional players taking a more circumspect view. 'It seems like the story, at least in the equity market, is everything is kind of risk on,' Garrett DeSimone, head of quantitative research at OptionMetrics, said. 'It has gotten a bit frothy in that sense.' So-called meme stocks - stocks that surge in price due to social media hype rather than company fundamentals - are at the forefront of this frothy market behavior. Krispy Kreme and GoPro were among the companies riding the latest meme stock rally on Wednesday as retail traders latched on to the highly shorted names, a day after piling into the shares of department store company Kohl's. The Goldman Sachs Most Shorted Rolling Index, an equal-weighted basket of the 50 highest short-interest names in the Russell 3000 Index, is up 13 per cent this month, compared to a nearly two per cent gain for the Russell 3000 in that time, and is up over 60 per cent since the low for the year in April. 'Retail has helped fuel the squeeze,' Marco Iachini, senior vice president of research at Vanda, said. Retail interest was particularly on display in the options market with several retail favorite options names, including Krispy Kreme and Kohl's, drawing massive trading volume. 'They also have a huge amount of mentions across retail boards and Reddit. So they've definitely attracted some attention, you know, not based on fundamentals, which I guess defines a meme stock,' OptionMetrics' DeSimone said. Trading in short-dated contracts has also surged, signaling higher appetite for risk-taking, options data showed. Still, various options market gauges, including put-to-call ratios and stock correlation measures, point to frothiness but are not at highs seen at the peak of past periods of speculative frenzy. 'There is not the signal yet that things are so overbought that this needs to stop ... to me it still feels early stage,' said Brent Kochuba, founder of options analytic service SpotGamma. Speculative fever is on display also in cryptocurrencies and crypto-related stocks and exchange-traded funds. Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, recently hit a record high of US$123,153, while several crypto-focused stocks, including crypto exchange Coinbase Global and bitcoin stockpiler Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, have soared. 'Confidence among retail traders is notably higher, fueled in part by recent gains in crypto markets,' Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide, said in a note. Irene Tunkel, chief U.S. equity strategist at BCA Research, said although retail investors appeared to be over-exuberant, the market as a whole did not. 'You look at institutional investor sentiment, it's not really overextended,' Tunkel said. 'So I think it's just one group, which is retail investors, that got overly excited and the froth is there.' Despite the S&P 500 making new highs, equity positioning is far below February levels as investors remain underweight stocks, according to Deutsche Bank estimates. The S&P 500 as of Tuesday traded at 22.5 times its expected 12-month earnings - its highest level this year - and has been above a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22 for nearly the past month, according to LSEG Datastream. That is a valuation level the index has reached only about seven per cent of the time over the past 40 years, and is well above its long-term average of 15.8. Investors say valuations are not always useful for determining the market's near-term direction. But the fact that equity valuations are elevated could make stocks more vulnerable to any disappointing shocks in the coming weeks. 'For me, it's more when positioning gets really crowded. So right now, we're seeing these bouts of meme stock trading, but I'm not seeing it really affect the overall market,' Vanda's Iachini said. --- Reporting by Saqib Iqbal Ahmed and Lewis Krauskopf; Additional reporting by Laura Matthews; editing by Megan Davies and Nia Williams

DOW Lags Q2 Earnings and Sales Estimates on Lower Prices

Dow Inc. DOW recorded a loss (on a reported basis) of $835 million or $1.18 per share for second-quarter 2025. This compares to a profit of $439 million or 62 cents per share a year ago. The bottom line was hurt by lower prices and restructuring charges. On an adjusted basis (barring one-time items), DOW logged a loss of 42 cents for the reported quarter against earnings of 68 cents a year ago. The figure was wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 11 cents. Dow recorded net sales of $10,104 million for the quarter, down 7% year over year. It missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $10,277 million. The top line was adversely impacted by lower sales across all segments. Volume declined 1% year over year, with growth in the United States and Canada outweighed by reductions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India (EMEAI). On a sequential basis, volume fell 2%, as seasonal increases in Performance Materials & Coatings, particularly in downstream silicones, were offset by declines in Packaging & Specialty Plastics. Dow's Segment Highlights Packaging & Specialty Plastics: The division's sales fell 8.9% year over year to $5,025 million in the reported quarter. The figure missed our estimate of $5,197.9 million. Volume grew 1% year over year, led by greater energy sales and polyethylene volumes, which were slightly offset by decreased volumes in functional polymers. Local prices fell 10% year over year, primarily due to lower downstream polymer pricing. Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure: Sales for the unit were down 5.6% year over year to $2,786 million. The figure lagged our estimate of $2,884.6 million. Local prices fell 5% year over year, indicating reductions in both businesses. Volume fell 2% due to lower volumes in Polyurethanes and Construction Chemicals, which were partly offset by higher volumes in Industrial Solutions. Performance Materials & Coatings: Revenues from the division fell 5% year over year to $2,129 million. The figure missed our estimate of $2,142.1 million. Volume fell 3% year over year, as gains in downstream silicones were more than offset by decreased volumes in coatings applications and upstream siloxanes. Local prices fell 3% year over year due to losses in both businesses. DOW's Financials Cash flow from operating activities for continuing operations was negative $470 million, representing a decline of $1.3 billion from the same period last year and a $574 million drop from the previous quarter. This decrease was primarily due to lower earnings resulting from margin compression. Shareholder returns for the quarter amounted to $496 million in dividends. Dow's Outlook Dow noted that its strategic initiatives help the company navigate the evolving challenges within the industry. However, the emergence of new market entrants exporting at anti-competitive prices is creating signs of oversupply, highlighting the need for broader industry collaboration and further regulatory intervention to re-establish fair market conditions. The company's near-term growth projects—all set to be fully operational in the third quarter—along with its long-term strategic investments, are expected to enhance Dow's presence in high-value applications and attractive markets that are less affected by such anti-competitive pressures. These efforts aim to support more stable earnings and deliver strong returns to shareholders. In addition, Dow remains committed to structurally reducing its cost base, optimizing its global asset network and upholding operational excellence to further reinforce its competitive edge. DOW Stock's Price Performance DOW's shares are down 43% in a year compared with the industry's 15.9% decline. DOW's Zacks Rank & Key Picks DOW currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Blackstone's profit tops estimate on credit strength, fee gains

A sign for The Blackstone Group L.P. investment firm stands in front of their offices, Oct. 15, 2018, in New York. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File) Blackstone beat second-quarter profit expectations on Thursday on strong gains in its credit and private equity businesses and a pickup in performance-related fees tied to perpetual capital funds. Shares of the world's largest alternative asset manager rose 3.2 per cent, turning positive for the year. Even though tariffs uncertainties remain a source of concern for the economy, resilient investors have propelled equity markets to record highs, enabling large asset managers such as Blackstone to capitalize. Asset sales in the credit and insurance segment were US$10 billion, while the company also sold US$7.3 billion of private equity assets. It had US$181.2 billion of capital available for deployment. Fee-related performance revenue more than doubled to US$472.1 million, powered by a 16 per cent growth in perpetual capital assets under management. Perpetual capital refers to long-term assets under management that does not have a fixed end date and cannot typically be redeemed by investors on demand. Distributable earnings, which represent cash that can be used to pay dividends, grew 25 per cent to US$1.6 billion, or US$1.21 per share, for the three months ended June 30. It exceeded analysts' expectation of US$1.10, according to data compiled by LSEG. Blackstone has said it remains capable of executing deals even in uncertain environments, underscoring its resilience should trade tensions escalate further. As of last close, Blackstone's shares were down slightly this year, compared with an eight per cent gain in the benchmark S&P 500 index. Strong inflows Inflows of US$52.1 billion helped push Blackstone's total AUM to US$1.2 trillion, up 13 per cent from a year ago. The credit and insurance segment attracted more than half of the total inflows. The unit is a key driver of Blackstone's growing influence in private credit, as more companies turn to investment firms for flexible financing. The private equity arm also recorded segment distributable earnings of US$751.4 million, up 55 per cent from a year ago. AUM at the real estate division fell three per cent, but segment distributable earnings grew 10 per cent. 'Blackstone is deploying more in real estate than it is realizing, indicating some bullishness on its part as it is putting more money to work than it's taking off the table,' Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski wrote in a note. The company had said tariffs could drive up construction costs and reduce new supply, potentially elevating real estate values if the economy avoids a recession. --- Reporting by Niket Nishant in Bengaluru and Isla Binnie in New York; Editing by Arun Koyyur
