
Securing resources as trade continues to become more regional
That mismatch is prompting a rethink at every level about how countries and companies go about getting hold of the resources they need. From copper and lithium to natural gas, the playbook is being rewritten. In general, three strategies are emerging. One is the revival of government-to-government deals to lock in supply. Another tries to localise supply chains entirely, which is ambitious, but often impractical. The third, and increasingly the most crucial, leans on the agility of commodity traders to find workarounds in a fractured market.
Spotlight on traders
Not everything can or should be solved at the state level. That's where commodity traders have become increasingly vital. Long seen as background players, these firms are now operating closer to the centre of the action. What makes them so effective is precisely what they're not: they're not governments, they're not bogged down in bureaucracy, and they're not tied to national agendas. When supply routes seize up or politics interferes, traders often keep the system running.
They're evolving fast. Companies like Mercuria and Trafigura are moving beyond deal-making. They're beginning to buy stakes in infrastructure, acquiring refining assets, and in some cases even owning upstream production. That's a big shift: from middlemen to fully integrated players.
One firm illustrating that shift is BGN International, the Geneva-based trading arm of Bayegan Group. As a major private commodity trader and one of the largest buyer of LPG from the US, BGN has traditionally played a crucial behind-the-scenes role, moving over 50 million tonnes of commodities a year. Today, they are stepping closer to the physical assets that underpin trade. Its recent acquisition of two mid-sized LPG tankers gives it a stronger foothold in gas shipping. In a world where flexibility and access are everything, it's a strategic move: part logistics play, part supply chain insurance. It shows how today's traders have evolved to be more than intermediaries; they're becoming builders of the very systems that keep energy moving.
Africa, too, is a space to watch. With the African Export-Import Bank backing a US$3 billion facility to encourage intra-African fuel trade, there's real momentum behind localising energy flows. The idea is to connect African refineries with African buyers, cutting reliance on imports from faraway markets. Traders like BGN are positioned to help make that happen by handling credit, navigating logistics, and stitching together deals where others might struggle.
In a world where supply chains are more brittle, that kind of nimbleness is essential. Traders operate with speed and flexibility, offering financial instruments to manage volatility. Their role now extends beyond simple logistics as they help contribute to the stability of the system. By absorbing shocks and facilitating continuity, they serve an important part in market flows even amid geopolitical disruptions.
Resources are big business
Some economies have decided the best way forward is to leverage the free market and cut large deals. What's often dubbed 'friend-shoring' has been gathering steam. In May, for example, the US began evaluating a commercial lease sale off American Samoa for seabed mining of critical minerals such as nickel and cobalt offered by California-based firm Impossible Metals. This move opens the door to private sector participation while encouraging investment in deep‑sea mining technology and permitting frameworks. This type of partnership may reflect a broader shift in which mining companies play a growing role in supporting both regional development and global supply chains.
In the Middle East, the approach has taken a slightly different form. Armed with capital from fossil fuel exports, Gulf energy companies are now placing upstream bets, investing directly in foreign mines. Considerable capital has already been deployed, for example, billions have been committed to ventures in copper, nickel, and lithium. It's a clear move by regional energy companies to future-proof: if electricity is the new oil, then metals are the new crude.
As the Gulf continues to sketch out plans for an integrated gas grid, which would allow for natural gas to move more freely in the region, it's not only emissions targets that are being met. For companies still dependent on oil revenues, gas offers a path toward diversification without ignoring hydrocarbons altogether. In all these cases, properly thought-out resource agreements provide long-term strategic protection for both energy companies and the economies they serve.
The cost of self-reliance
Meanwhile, a third approach, full-scale localisation, is getting political traction, especially in developed economies. The concept is simple enough: extract your resources, refine them domestically, and manufacture your clean energy technologies. It promises control and security, but the practical hurdles are steep.
Start with geology. The US may have lithium, but not in the volumes seen in Chile or Australia. Europe has almost no rare earths to speak of. Yet even when deposits exist, permitting, building, and launching a mine can take more than a decade. That's far too slow to align with 2030 emissions targets.
Then there's the cost. Labour, regulation, and environmental standards in richer countries mean domestic refining and manufacturing can be significantly more expensive. A battery metal processed in the US, for instance, might cost 30 to 50 per cent more than one from China. That kind of margin quickly eats into competitiveness—unless companies (whether processing or assembly plants, or OEM's) are willing to backstop the difference.
Other problems arise, too. Betting heavily on one material or process risks obsolescence if technologies evolve. Local opposition can block projects. And building entire parallel supply chains introduces the danger of wasteful duplication.
That's why some analysts now advocate for something more flexible: what's sometimes called 'regional anchoring.' Rather than trying to do everything in-house, the idea is to focus on specific strengths, processing or assembly, while still importing other inputs. Done right, this middle path offers more resilience than total reliance on imports, but without the massive price tag of full autonomy.
A system under pressure – but still moving
What's clear is that the road to a greener energy system won't be smooth, and trade, or the lack of it, is becoming a major obstacle. The supply chains that support decarbonisation are increasingly shaped by politics as much as by market forces. Countries are responding in different ways: through diplomacy, through investment at home, and perhaps most effectively through partnerships with traders.
All of these responses will remain in play. Bilateral deals will continue. Some will reshape whole sectors. Others will fizzle. But it's the traders who are increasingly critical in keeping the system coherent. They hedge against volatility, re-route cargoes under pressure, and knit together fractured supply chains in ways no government can.
While full-on localisation isn't likely to become the norm, strategic investments in key parts of the chain can still help reduce vulnerability. The real trick is finding the right balance. Lean too hard on bilateral deals and risk fragmenting the global system. Rely too much on traders, and questions arise about oversight. Go all-in on local production, and you might sacrifice speed for sovereignty. But for now, the system hasn't broken, that's largely thanks to the quiet consistency of commodity traders playing their own trade game across borders, through crises, and despite the noise.

Will gold's bull run continue after 26% surge in first half?
Gold surged 26 per cent in the first half of 2025, outperforming all major asset classes and recording 26 new all-time highs in dollar terms. Fuelled by a weaker dollar, stable interest rates, and intensifying geopolitical tensions, the precious metal reaffirmed its status as a safe-haven asset amid rising global uncertainty. According to the World Gold Council's mid-year outlook, gold's rally in the first half was supported by an exceptional mix of macroeconomic conditions: softening US Treasury yields, expectations of monetary easing, and the worst start for the US dollar since 1973. In tandem, investors sought refuge in gold as trade frictions, inflationary pressures, and global market volatility persisted. Global gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw a sharp resurgence, with total holdings rising by 397 tonnes — equivalent to $38 billion — bringing total assets under management to $383 billion, a 41 per cent increase. Average daily gold trading volumes also hit a record $329 billion, reflecting robust participation from institutional and retail investors across over-the-counter (OTC), futures, and ETF markets. Central banks continued their strategic gold purchases, albeit below the record-setting levels of 2022 and 2023. Their sustained accumulation — a hedge against currency volatility and economic instability — reflects a broader shift away from dollar-dominated reserves. The WGC's Gold Return Attribution Model has identified three primary drivers behind the first-half rally: First, opportunity cost (7 per cent of gold's return): Gold became more attractive relative to the weakening dollar and subdued bond yields, which offered little incentive to hold fixed-income assets. Second, risk and uncertainty (4 per cent): Rising geopolitical tensions — particularly around US-China relations and tariff threats — as well as broader economic fragility drove safe-haven flows. Third, momentum (5 per cent): Positive ETF inflows and trading activity created a feedback loop, amplifying gold's upward trajectory. The WGC analysts, looking to the second half of 2025, predicts that the gold market faces a pivotal juncture. Under current consensus expectations, gold is likely to remain rangebound, with potential upside of 0 to 5 per cent, which would translate into a full-year return of 25 to 30 per cent. 'Gold appears to have priced in much of the current macro landscape,' the report notes. 'But the path ahead depends heavily on how economic conditions evolve, particularly in the face of persistent inflation and trade-related uncertainties.' Inflation is expected to pick up in H2 due to global tariff increases, with US CPI forecast to reach 2.9 per cent. Central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, are anticipated to begin a cautious easing cycle in the final quarter, with a 50-basis-point rate cut priced in. These factors could help sustain investor interest in gold. However, rising prices may weigh on consumer demand and spur more recycling, potentially capping further upside. While institutional and central bank appetite is likely to stay firm, ETF and futures positions are not yet overstretched — suggesting room for renewed buying should risk sentiment sour. WGC's bullish case envisions deteriorating economic and financial conditions, such as stagflation or a full-blown recession. In this scenario, gold could rise another 10 to 15 per cent in the second half, ending the year nearly 40 per cent higher. 'Such an environment would likely spur further flight-to-safety flows, higher ETF inflows, and accelerated central bank diversification away from the US dollar,' the report says. Gold ETFs, for instance, have accumulated just over 500 tonnes in the past year — significantly below the 700 to 1,100 tonnes amassed during past bull cycles. COMEX net long positions remain below historical peaks, reinforcing the notion that the market is not yet overbought. Conversely, a more optimistic geopolitical and economic outcome — though seen as less probable — could pressure gold. A resolution of key trade disputes, stronger global growth, and rising yields would curb demand for safe-haven assets. Under this scenario, gold could give back 12 to 17 per cent of its H1 gains, ending the year with modest single-digit returns. Higher Treasury yields and a rebounding dollar would elevate the opportunity cost of holding gold, triggering ETF outflows and reducing central bank buying. Still, any downside may be cushioned by renewed consumer interest at lower prices and a pullback in recycling. Yellow metal analysts argue that as the global macro and geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, gold remains uniquely positioned to serve as both a tactical and strategic asset. Its strong first-half showing underscores investor demand for portfolio protection and diversification amid heightened uncertainty. Ultimately, they contend that as central banks adjust policies and geopolitical dynamics unfold, gold's fundamentals — supported by broad institutional interest, resilient central bank demand, and constrained supply — remain solid. Whether consolidating or surging anew, gold continues to prove its worth in a rapidly shifting global order, they noted. While consensus forecasts suggest a stable but modestly positive outlook for the rest of 2025, any deviation from these expectations — particularly toward stagflation or geopolitical escalation — could reignite a strong upward push. On the flip side, resolution of global conflicts and economic acceleration could temporarily weaken gold's allure, they said.

Iran seeks sanctions-busting alliance at meeting with China and Russia
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed setting up an international organisation to study ways to counteract sanctions after meeting Russian and Chinese ministers at a Shanghai Co-operation Organisation summit on Tuesday. Iran's economy is struggling under the weight of western sanctions imposed over Tehran's nuclear programme, which has been a source of friction for decades. Iran relies heavily on economic links with Beijing and Moscow, and is part of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members also include China, Russia, India and Pakistan i. Tianjin, in northern China, is hosting the organisation's 25th foreign ministers meeting. Mr Araghchi said in a post on Telegram that the SCO should establish a 'Centre for Studies and Counteraction to Unilateral Sanctions' to develop strategies to counter 'illegal economic sanctions' and protect supply chains, banking systems and the trade exchanges of its member states. He also sought support for Iran following its 12-day aerial war with Israel last month. Israel and the US launched air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities which they said were part of a nuclear programme geared towards weaponisation. Tehran denies having any such plans. Mr Araghchi said the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation should also 'establish a permanent mechanism to monitor, document and co-ordinate responses to military aggression, acts of sabotage, state terrorism and violations of national sovereignty'. 'The SCO is gradually opening up its place in the global arena, meaning it is gradually going beyond the regional arena, and it has many different issues on its agenda, including in the economic, political and security fields,' he added. He said he would be holding bilateral meetings with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the event. Iranian state news agency Irna said Mr Araghchi also met Chinese President Xi Jinping and would hold talks with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Mr Lavrov confirmed the meeting with Mr Araghchi had taken place and said they had discussed how to reach a peaceful solution to the Israeli conflict. Since the reimposition of American sanctions on Iran during Donald Trump's first term as US president, Tehran has deepened ties with Moscow through a 20-year strategic pact, as well as with Beijing, which buys as much as 90 per cent of Iranian oil exports.

Acknowledging the evolving nature of climate disclosure in the region, he said they recognised the need to establish a benchmark rooted in data and measurable progress. It is important for all the stakeholders to know where the promises made by industry stalwarts on reducing carbon emissions are going, and which way they will steer the planet. 'Reaching net zero carbon requires consistency, transparency, and shared responsibility, and that's the approach we have taken. We are a signatory to the World Green Building Council's Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, which sets a clear framework,' says Ibraheem. This means they have agreed to a clear plan to reduce their carbon footprint in two key areas: direct emissions from their operations (known as Scope 1) and emissions from the energy they purchase (Scope 2). To tackle these, Ibraheem says, their strategy is: cut emissions at the source. 'We do this by improving energy efficiency across the building, upgrading systems where needed, and switching to renewable energy whenever possible. Only if these measures fall short will we consider using carbon offsets, and even then, only those that meet the highest standards.' For Scope 3 emissions — those that come indirectly through the people they work with, like tenants and suppliers — they believe change happens best through collaboration. 'So, we're working closely with everyone in our network to encourage aligned action, aiming for a bigger, shared impact,' Ibraheem adds. The fact that many companies and institutions that make mighty promises fail to follow through doesn't deter ICD Brookfield Place. 'Our skilled teams are the ones driving this forward, turning plans into measurable outcomes,' says Ibraheem. But people need firm blueprints to work on, and this, Ibraheem says, came with a structured approach involving precise steps, each requiring specialised expertise. 'At every step of the process, we engaged globally recognised consultants to carry out in-depth studies, helping us identify the most effective and achievable route to meet our sustainability goals,' he said. 'Their expertise was instrumental in shaping our detailed Net Zero Pathway roadmaps, which outlined various options supported by specific actions, timelines, budgets, and risk assessments.' 'In addition, they helped us establish interim targets aligned with climate science, providing a credible structure to measure our progress toward our 2030 objectives. Technical experts also played a key role in implementing sophisticated carbon management systems that allow us to monitor, track, and control emissions in real time with both precision and transparency.' By achieving a 16 per cent drop in cooling demand and a 7 per cent reduction in power consumption in 2024, ICD Brookfield Place has not only beaten others to the goalpost, but also helped design a framework for others to follow. Ibraheem says that from the outset, real-time energy monitoring tools such as utility metres and IoT sensors were installed across landlord-managed and tenant spaces. These are connected to a Centralized Management Platform, a custom digital system that compiles data from across the building and translates it into live dashboards. These dashboards not only show energy usage in real time but also help detect faults and analyse how systems behave. The team developed a detailed energy model and conducted extensive audits. This gave them the insights needed to identify inefficiencies and study how different systems performed under varying occupancy and weather conditions. Based on these findings, several key systems like HVAC, parking ventilation fans, lifts and escalators were reprogrammed to operate only when necessary and in energy-efficient modes. The ICD Brookfield Place building, Ibraheem contends, 'is designed to support both environmental sustainability and human sustainability, with a focus on wellbeing, culture, and experience. Every part of the design reflects a human-centric approach, where sustainability is about how people feel, connect, and thrive.'
