Juventus 2-5 Manchester City: Rodri stars on return to starting XI as Bianconeri humbled in Orlando

Manchester City were unrelenting on Thursday night as they put five goals past Juventus to top their Club World Cup group.
The two sides came into the match level on both points and goal difference, but with the knowledge that whoever finished atop the group would move on to a more friendly side of the knockout draw, likely to avoid the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

City had cruised through the tournament until this point and today faced their first proper test, but swiftly reduced the 36-time Serie A champions to the level of their minnow groupmates Wydad AC and Al-Ain, closing out the group stages with a statement win marked by flashy, swaggering goals.
Juventus will progress despite the humbling defeat, but will likely be made to face Real Madrid in the round of 16, a task they will not look forward to after a demoralising result. City, on the other hand, look set to face RB Salzburg.
City finding a new top gear coincided with Rodri's return to the starting lineup, ten months after suffering an ACL injury which saw him miss much of last season. He produced the same kind of display which won him the Ballon d'Or, pulling the strings from midfield as he completed 65 minutes.
City wasted little time out of the blocks. Rayan Ait-Nouri and Jeremy Doku were both lively in the early stages, so it was little surprise that they would be the men to combine for the opener.

The Algerian full-back slotted a sumptuous ball through to the winger, who cut inside and delivered a tidy curled finish into the far bottom corner, well beyond the reach of the 'keeper Michele Di Gregorio.
Their lead did not hold for long, though. An uncharacteristic misplaced pass from Ederson found only Teun Koopmeiners, who drove at goal and fired home ruthlessly from close range in what would prove to be the only clear-cut Juventus chance of the half.
Ederson was lucky, though, as his error was not the worst of the day, or even the worst of the half. City's lead was soon restored as Pierre Kalulu produced a baffling own goal.

Matheus Nunes drove to the byline and squared a tame cross into the empty penalty area. Kalulu, under no pressure, turned the ball into his own net from the edge of the six-yard box.

Omar Marmoush did what he could to extend City's lead before the break, forcing a fingertip save from Di Gregorio with a 30-yard piledriver, but the advantage remained at one as the whistle blew. That effort proved his final involvement, too, as he was replaced by Erling Haaland at halftime.
The talismanic Norwegian had an immediate impact. Tijjani Reijnders flashed down the right flank and pulled a cross across the box for Haaland to bundle home. It was not the prettiest finish of his career, but they all count.
City then produced their statement goals of the afternoon. After a rare Juventus chance, Ederson hoofed the ball long to Haaland, who fed Foden and Savinho to walk the ball over the line, immediately quashing any threat of a comeback.
Another punishing blow followed as Di Gregorio saved well from Haaland, only to see Savinho smash a screamer in off the bar from 25 yards.

Kenan Yıldız then teed up Dušan Vlahović to pull one back, but, it was far too little, far too late.
Igor Tudor will be left to pick up the pieces and answer awkward questions after leaving some of his top players out of the starting 11. He must do so quickly, too, with the round of 16 only a few days away.
Pep Guardiola, though, is sitting pretty. He and City could not be in a more comfortable position as they head into the knockout phase as definite favourites.

🔬 The Debrief as the Club World Cup gets its biggest shocks

Two unlikely names put themselves into the quarter-finals with easily the biggest shocks of the Club World Cup so far. Here's what went down overnight ... You can sign up to DAZN to watch every FIFA Club World Cup game for free. What happened? 📝 A non-European side will definitely be in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup after two seismic shocks in the last eight. Advertisement Inter were probably the better side in their clash with Fluminense but a goal inside the opening three minutes and one right at the death ensured the Rio giants booked their place in the next round. Then it was on to Orlando where Al Hilal stunned Manchester City with probably the game of the competition so far. A pulsating 90 minutes ended in a 2-2 draw before Marcos Leonardo netted an extra time winner to see the Saudi club win 4-3. Player of the Day 🔥 📸 Francois Nel - 2025 Getty Images Marcos Leonardo has been a veritable goal machine since joining Al Hilal last summer but the Brazil youth international netted his first two of the Club World Cup overnight, showing his goal-hanger tendencies with a pair of close-range finishes. What this means 🤔 Inter and Manchester City are now heading home with Fluminense and Al Hilal ready to face each other in Orlando on Friday evening. What they said 🗣️ 📸 PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA - AFP or licensors 'We knew that it would be a difficult game against one of the best teams in the world and we wanted to show our ideas, our talents and our power. We made a very good game; we took our chances so we can be happy. We wanted to show that Al Hilal have the power and the talent to be here and we showed a great mentality.' Kalidou Koulibaly, Al Hilal defender "We didn't give up. We tried until the end. We tried to make some changes with the formation. It was a day that wasn't for us. That's it. We tried to do our best, like always. Today wasn't a day for us... We didn't expect them to play five in the back. They were well organised with the low block on defence. It was hard for us to find a solution, especially in the first half." Cristian Chivu, Inter head coach Advertisement 'It is a pity. We have been on incredible journey together and were in a good place. The vibe was really good. I cannot thank the players enough for training and playing how they have been. But it was a difficult game. The margins were minimal. We created a lot and (Yassine) Bounou made incredible saves but we were so open. We would have loved to have continued, it will only be once every four years, and we had a feeling that the team was doing well. But we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season.' Not just Inter struggled: Brazilian sides as Europe's final boss

Fluminense has sensationally knocked out Inter in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. The Brazilians got off to a better start and then held on with everything they had against the Italian vice-champion. In the end, Flu celebrated the upset victory over this year's Champions League finalist. 🏆 This is the first knockout for a European heavyweight, but not the only defeat against a Brazilian team. On the contrary: the Brazilians have even come out on top in direct comparison with European teams. In the course of the tournament so far, there have been seven encounters between Brazilian and European teams. In these matches, the teams from the country of the record world champion were able to win a total of three times, in addition to two draws and two defeats. In addition to Fluminense's recent victory, Flamengo won 3-1 against Chelsea in the group stage and Botafogo won 1-0 against Paris. 🇧🇷🏆 Advertisement This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. 'Time to rest our minds'

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said it is now time to rest for the new Premier League season after his side were shocked 4-3 by Saudi Pro League Al-Hilal in the last 16 of the Club World Cup. Guardiola said: "It is a pity. We have been on incredible journey together and were in a good place. The vibe was really good. Advertisement "I cannot thank the players enough for training and playing how they have been. "But it was a difficult game. The margins were minimal. We created a lot and [Yassine] Bounou made incredible saves - but we were so open. "We would have loved to have continued. It will only be once every four years, and we had a feeling that the team was doing well. But we go home and now it is time to rest - rest our minds for the new season. "We regret a little bit that we allowed them to run a bit more. They defended so deep, the wingers were so quick and Bounou made a lot of saves. "In the end, we have to score and be clinical. They arrived more in the transitions. They did not create much in the first half - we did, but could not finish it. "I had a feeling we could go through but they punished us on the transitions."
