After Rs 36,500 Cr Jane Street Scam Saga, Can SEBI Plug The Gaps In Derivatives Market?

News182 days ago
Jane Street, a US-based algo trading company, was alleged by the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in its 115-page report for market manipulation and misleading investors. The company was alleged to make profits in billions through unethical strategies.
SEBI has now barred Jane Street from accessing the Indian stock market and ordered to pay Rs 4,840 crore in alleged unlawful gains.
Gaurav Goel, Founder and Director at Fynocrat Technologies told The Economic Times that the damage isn't just financial – it erodes faith in the system. 'This kind of manipulation, if proven true, not only distorts the market but also harms retail investors who trade with trust and limited capital," he added.
Goel told ET that several regulatory gaps need to be filled in. He said 'manipulators often trade in both stock and options markets to create fake price moves. Sebi should build systems that track both markets together and raise alerts when something looks suspicious."
Dinesh Thakkar, Managing Director, Chairman and the Founder of Angel One while sharing his PoV on the future of India's proprietary trading, said India's market opportunity is ????????????????????????????????????????, ???????????? ???????????????????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????????????????????? ???????? ???????????? ???????????? ????????????????.
He said that India's macroeconomic foundation remains solid. ???????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????, ???????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????????????, ???????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????????, ???????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???????????????????????????????????? continue to support high liquidity and sustained market participation
Siddhart Bhamre, head of institutional research at Asit C Mehta said Jane Street is one of the largest traders contributing to India markets. He added that when big players are banned for wrongdoing, others become cautious and reduce activity, leading to lower volumes.
The impact may extend beyond SEBI's jurisdiction, with tax authorities expected to examine Jane Street's structure under India's General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR). A large chunk of profits was reportedly routed through its Singapore-based FPI arm, leveraging treaty-based tax benefits, while Indian entities allegedly carried out intraday trades—something FPIs are not allowed to do.
'Considering the observations in the interim order, GAAR could potentially be applied to shift profits to entities liable to pay tax in India," said Harshal Bhuta, partner at PR Bhuta & Co, in a statement to The Economic Times.
Jane Street Fraud Saga: Full Explained
The regulatory action comes after an extensive investigation into alleged manipulation of the Indian stock market through index derivatives, particularly Bank Nifty options, which earned the company massive profits of over Rs 36,500 crore between January 2023 and March 2025.

Between January 2023 and March 2025, Jane Street entities made over Rs 43,289 crore in profits from index options, particularly Bank Nifty (BANKNIFTY) using various strategies that allegedly manipulated markets. These profits were partly offset by losses in other segments like stock futures and cash equity, resulting in a net gain of Rs 36,502 crore.
In a 105-page order, Sebi highlighted two key manipulative strategies — 'Intraday Index Manipulation Strategy' and 'Extended Marking the Close Strategy'.

Profits were disproportionately high on expiry days, when options contracts expire and price influence can be most potent.
Trades were concentrated in short bursts, often aligned with expiry timings.
'JS Group made a total profit of Rs 36,502.12 crores across all segments," Sebi said in the order.
SEBI has accused Jane Street of:
Violating the Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices (PFUTP) Regulations
Misleading market participants, especially retail traders who rely on index movements

'They'll Have To Pay': Trump Warns India, Other BRICS Members Of Extra 10% Tariff

Last Updated: Donald Trump said White House tariff letters represent trade deals as he warned BRICS of a 10% tariff. US President Donald Trump said that the tariff letters sent by the White House to various countries effectively represent trade deals. During a cabinet meeting, Donald Trump said, 'A letter means a deal because it is a better way- because we have 200 countries." The comment comes amid Donald Trump's sweeping trade overhaul, under which more than a dozen countries received formal notices of tariff hikes, with rates ranging from 25% to 40%. The White House said these moves are aimed at correcting long-standing trade imbalances and pressuring countries to engage on more favorable terms. Donald Trump's Warning To BRICS Nations Donald Trump issued a clear warning to BRICS nations- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa- which has been expanding and exploring alternatives to US-dollar-dominated trade systems. Donald Trump said, 'BRICS was set up to undermine the dollar. If they are a member of BRICS, they have to pay a 10% tariff." Reaffirming his commitment to defending the dollar's dominance in global finance, Donald Trump said bluntly, 'The dollar is king. We are going to keep it that way. If people want to challenge it, they can. But they will have to pay a big price. I don't think any of them are going to pay that price." The 10% surcharge, he suggested, would apply broadly to nations formally joining or actively aligning themselves with BRICS, adding another layer to his administration's confrontational economic posture. He reiterated that the letters function as non-negotiable offers- signaling that compliance, not prolonged talks, is his preferred path to economic alignment. Donald Trump's Tariffs Under Donald Trump's new tariff regime, the United States imposed sharply increased rates on 14 countries, with the highest levies targeting Laos and Myanmar at 40 percent, followed by Thailand and Cambodia at 36 percent and Bangladesh and Serbia at 35 percent. Indonesia faces a 32 percent rate while South Africa and Bosnia and Herzegovina are hit with 30 percent tariffs. A 25 percent tariff has been applied to Malaysia, Tunisia, Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan. These tariffs are set to take effect on August 1. SRA law tweak: Assets to be seized if bldr defaults on rent

Mumbai: State govt is putting the screws on builders as well as slum dwellers to speed up SRA projects, reports Chaitanya Marpakwar. To recover pending rent from builders who don't pay slum dwellers after demolishing their homes, govt has introduced an amendment to The Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971 which allows rent money to be recovered from a company's property or the personal property of its directors/partners. Since outstanding rent will be considered arrears of land revenue, SRA will be able to attach and sell a builder's property to extract rent money. Govt has also reduced the time given to slum dwellers who don't agree to join a rehab scheme from 120 days to 60 days after more than 50% of slum dwellers have given consent. The amendment bill was introduced in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday and will be discussed later this week. SRA CEO M Kalyankar said that the amendments would help fast-track SRA schemes and make sure that slum dwellers get rent on time. SRA officials said around Rs 620 crore in rent is still due from builders. Officials said to recover arrears of land revenue, govt has various legal processes at its disposal including serving notices, attaching property, and even imprisoning the defaulter. "Under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code (MLRC), govt can attach and sell the defaulter's movable and immovable property to recover the dues. In some cases, bank accounts or lockers may be attached. Right now the SRA can only issue stop work notices to the builder for not paying rent or stop giving new permissions but beyond that there is no deterrent," an official said. Some other amendments in the bill include those related to handing over land to govt agencies like MMRDA, MHADA, MSRDC and CIDCO to redevelop slums on lease within 30 days of issuance of the letter of intent.

3 cos frontrunners for Deonar waste treatment project

Mumbai: Three companies emerged as frontrunners when bids were opened on Tuesday for BMC's Rs 2,368-crore bioremediation tender to scientifically treat 185 lakh tonnes of waste at the Deonar dumping ground —one of the oldest and most toxic landfills in the country. Only one of them, Re Sustainability Ltd, has experience in handling Deonar's solid waste; the other two are infrastructure companies. One of the three—Navayuga Engineering Ltd—had tied up with Adani Enterprises for a 47.8km bypass project in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, which was launched in 2021. Re Sustainability is the parent company of Chennai MSW Pvt Ltd, which is currently working on seting up a waste-to-energy plant at Deonar to process 600 tonnes of solid waste daily that is expected to be commissioned by this Oct. The other company—HG Infra Engineering Ltd—has handled highways, bridges, Metro, railways and renewable energy projects, according to its official website. Officials said a scrutiny of the bids packet was still underway as of late Tuesday evening. "The financial packet will be opened on July 11, after which the lowest bidder will be decided," said a civic official. The urgency ties into the state cabinet's Oct 2023 approval to hand over a portion of the Deonar land to Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd—a joint venture between Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (an Adani Group special purpose vehicle) and the state govt. BMC had extended the deadline for submission of bids three times after floating the tender this May—from June 3 to June 23, then to July 1, and finally to July 4. The civic body had held a pre-bid meeting with interested bidders. Officials said several interested parties sought more time to study the entire process, apart from raising questions about certain environmental permissions, owing to which the extensions were granted. The queries raised by the prospective bidders were mainly related to logistical challenges. Many of them shared their concern over how such a large pile of legacy waste could be cleared within three years.
