A man who dragged a visually impaired child away from her mother will be sentenced next month.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Stephan Obelngoa (24) of Deerpark Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, assault of a peace officer and resisting arrest at The Square, Tallaght. Dublin, on October 2nd, 2023.

He has six previous convictions and was on bail at the time of this offence.
Garda Sergeant
Gemma Collins told Shaun Smyth, BL, prosecuting, that an 11-year-old girl, her mother and little brother were leaving the shopping centre on the day in question when they noticed a man later identified as Obelngoa.
He was topless, and the mother described his movements as 'unnerving' and said he seemed 'aggressive'.
The court heard the mother intended to walk on and avoid Obelngoa, but she suddenly noticed that her daughter had disappeared from her peripheral vision.

The woman turned around and saw her visually impaired daughter being dragged away by Obelngoa. The little girl was screaming, crying and struggling to get away.
The mother described her daughter as 'bouncing off the ground'. Obelngoa then threw the girl into a concession stand.
Gda Sgt Collins said two security guards immediately subdued Obelngoa. When gardaí arrived, they found Obelngoa was shouting, roaring and aggressive as he was being restrained.
He then spat a mixture of blood and saliva into the face of one of the gardaí. As gardaí were trying to place handcuffs on Obelngoa, he tried to bite them.

Specialist gardaí interviewed the young girl, and she described to them 'being dragged like a doll and being dragged on the floor'. She said, 'I thought he was going to drag me away forever and would kidnap me'.
The girl was examined the following day by a doctor, and a medical report stated she suffered minor spinal soft tissue tenderness and abrasions. The court heard the young girl had trouble sleeping and was extremely anxious in public places like shopping centres afterwards.
Gda Sgt Collins agreed with Ciara Ní Ghabhann, BL, defending, that gardaí were unable to interview her client after he was arrested, as he was made an involuntary patient in Tallaght Hospital, where he remained for a period of time.
The garda agreed with counsel that CCTV footage obtained by the gardaí shows that the incident lasted a matter of seconds.

Ms Ní Ghabhann said her client suffers from schizophrenia and is given antipsychotic medication every three months. She said at the time of this incident, Obelngoa had been off his medications for six months and was self-medicating with cannabis.

Counsel said her client is currently under the supervision of the Probation Services and has undertaken community response programmes. The Probation Services have said he is at low risk of reoffending.
She said Obelngoa has written letters of apology to both the garda and the young girl in this case, outlining his sincere remorse. He does not have a clear memory of the incident, but when shown the CCTV footage, he was embarrassed.
She asked the court to take into account that her client was quite young and had an acute mental health issue when this offence was committed. She said her client has taken steps to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
Judge Sinead Ni Chulachain said, 'these are very serious offences,' and adjourned this matter for two weeks to consider her sentences and read all documents handed into the court.

Woman, 28, 'gang-raped by three Brits was bitten all over her body during two-hour ordeal in Croatian beach hotel'

Three British men have appeared in court in Croatia charged with the gang rape of a local woman at a popular holiday resort. Ami Arifi, 29, Gezhim Xhafa, 28, and Sohqib Shakibi, 24, appeared before an investigating judge on Thursday. The men have all been remanded in custody pending further investigations into the incident which happened on Tuesday in the port of Split. Police said the 28-year-old woman, who is local, was the victim of a planned attack and the men, who are all from London, face up to ten years in jail if convicted. One of the suspects is said to have offered a bail of 30 thousand euros, but it was not accepted. The suspects met the woman that same evening on Matejuška, the popular waterfront in Split and popular with tourists and locals. She is said to have taken a ride on a motorbike with one of them, then accepted their invitation to go to their four star hotel room at around 5.30 in the morning. According to local media, the first defendant insulted and swore at her, bit her lips and touched her private parts. The court heard the alleged victim objected to this behaviour and said it hurt, but the first defendant continued to assault her. He is alleged to have taken away the woman's mobile phone and asked her to have sexual intercourse with the second defendant. The victim, in fear, agreed and went to the room with the second defendant, it is alleged. After that, the first defendant allegedly asked the victim to perform oral sex on the third defendant, the court heard. According to the woman, he bit her and touched her all over her body. She says she resisted, but at one point managed to free herself and call her ex boyfriend who alerted police. Officers came to the hotel and arrested one of the suspects in the room. The others were quickly found. The court heard the drama in the hotel room lasted two hours. The suspects have all denied their guilt. They claim that everything happened without any coercion. Two are originally from Kosovo, but have British citizenship as does the third.

Accountant who defrauded farmer in mortgage deception case gets suspended sentence

An accountant and property developer who defrauded a farmer by taking out a €54,000 mortgage on his behalf and using it to pay off his debts nearly 20 years ago has been handed an 18-month suspended prison sentence. Francis Joseph Woods (75) applied for a mortgage for an investment property in Manchester on the injured party's behalf in 2007 in his capacity as the director of a property development company, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard. Advertisement The farmer, who used Woods' accountancy firm and knew Woods personally since he had managed his own father's business, paid a deposit of €14,000 and signed a loan document after meeting Woods and a mortgage broker in a pub. When he did not hear anything further in relation to the investment property, the farmer asked for his deposit back, which was eventually returned to him in 2008. However, the following year, the man was contacted by Ulster Bank and informed he was in debt to the mortgage amount of €54,500 plus interest. Woods, of Damestown, The Naul, Dublin, pleaded guilty to one count of defrauding the man on a date between August 2007 and November 2007. A mortgage drawdown letter purporting to be signed by the injured party was uncovered during the garda investigation. Advertisement It is the State's case that Woods used the mortgage money to pay costs related to his property development business. The garda investigation started in 2015 when the farmer made a complaint to gardaí. Woods was questioned in 2019 and made some admissions, telling gardaí he was in financial difficulty at the time. He has no previous convictions apart from some minor road traffic matters from 25 years ago. A victim impact statement was handed into court but not read aloud. Sentencing Woods on Friday, Judge Orla Crowe said that Woods had been a 'trusted adviser' to the injured party, and breached this trust, which was an aggravating factor. Advertisement Judge Crowe said this was a 'grievous breach of trust by a professional qualified person in a fiduciary position' who had 'abused that fiduciary position'. She noted the victim impact statement outlined the 'terrible impact' on the injured party, who still owes a 'significant amount' of money. Read More The judge said the injured party wanted Woods to know that he trusted him and had considered him to be a 'pillar of the community'. She said the mitigation included the guilty plea, a token of remorse of €10,000 and that he has not come to recent negative garda attention. The judge said she also took into account Woods's health issues and the contents of testimonials, many of which spoke of the defendant's honesty, adding that the court noted he was dishonest on this occasion, and 'fell into temptation'. She imposed a sentence of 18 months, suspended on strict conditions.
