Is there extra-time and penalties at the Club World Cup 2025?

Independent2 days ago

The Club World Cup is heating up as the world's best teams prepare to contend in the ever-intense knockout stages.
The group stage has concluded, meaning it is boom or bust for teams seeking to become the inaugural champions of the revamped competition in the United States.
With close to £100m in prize money up for grabs for the eventual winners, clubs will be desperate to claw their way to the final on July 13 at New York's MetLife Stadium.
But to get there, teams will have to fight to the wire - sometimes beyond the standard 90 minutes - to separate each other and ensure their dream of Club World Cup glory stays alive.
Here is how extra time and penalties will work in the Club World Cup.
Is there extra-time and penalties at the Club World Cup 2025?
If the score is level when the full-time whistle is blown in a knockout game, a 30-minute period of extra time - split into two 15-minute halves - will then be played to try and decide a winner.
During extra time, teams will be able to make an additional substitution on top of the five they've been allotted for the entire game.
If no winner can be found in extra time, a penalty shootout will take place to settle to tie and determine who progresses.
Players from each team will take penalties until there is a winner, and if the scores are level after five spot-kicks each, the shootout will go to sudden death.
DAZN will be broadcasting each match of the tournament live, including the final, for free in the UK.

Cristiano Ronaldo gives telling explanation after Club World Cup rejection

Portugal and Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't involved in the 2025 Club World Cup but the veteran received a number of offers to take part in the tournament Cristiano Ronaldo claims he turned down offers from Club World Cup participants to ensure he's in solid shape for a long domestic and international season. The veteran has instead extended his Al-Nassr contract, and will remain in the Saudi Pro League before aiming to lead Portugal to glory at the 2026 World Cup. Former Manchester United star Ronaldo became the highest-paid player in the world when he ended his second Old Trafford spell and moved to Riyadh. He has finished as the top scorer in the Saudi top flight in each of his two full seasons, but has yet to win a league or AFC Champions League title. ‌ River Plate were among the interested parties who failed with a Ronaldo approach. "In mid-March, informally, through a mutual friend, I told him, 'Hey, I have a Club World Cup coming up, for a player like you, who defined an era… don't you have any intention of playing in it?'" manager Marcelo Gallardo told ESPN. ‌ "Not only did he feel recognised, but he evaluated it, thought about it, but then responded, 'I have to prepare for next season'." Gallardo added. And Ronaldo's comments upon extending his Al-Nassr stay are consistent with that. Fluminense also explored a move, only to be knocked back, and Ronaldo has shed more light on the situation. "I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup, but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup at the end," the 40-year-old told Al-Nassr TV. While he isn't involved in this year's 32-team Club World Cup, he previously represented both United and Real Madrid in the competition before its expansion. He is a four-time winner - once with United in 2008 and three times with Madrid in 2014, 2016 and 2017. He made key contributions in those 2016 and 2017 finals as Madrid went back-to back. A hat-trick in 2016 helped the Spanish club overcome Kashima Antlers after extra-time, while the following year he scored the only goal of the game in a victory over Gremio. Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal in June, helping Portugal secure a 1-1 draw with Spain in the UEFA Nations League final before winning on penalties. He also netted in the semi-final victory over Germany and the second leg of the quarter-final triumph against Denmark in March. Portugal have yet to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign due to those Nations League responsibilities, but will kick things off away to Armenia in September. Hungary and Ireland are the other teams in their group, with the winners qualifying automatically and the runners-up going into the play-offs. US sprint star who suffered NSFW wardrobe malfunction during a race receives shock new job offer

The US track star who suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction in the middle of a race last week has been handed an unexpected job offer - to become an underwear model. Chris Robinson was running the 400m hurdles at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in Czechia last week when a nightmare occurred and his manhood fell out of his shorts. But while the American may have initially been embarrassed by the NSFW malfunction, the job offers are now flooding in - and it appears he may be interested in earning himself a quick buck. According to TMZ, underwear company Shinesty have reached out to Robinson to offer him the chance to model their products, just days after his private parts slipped out of his shorts for the world to see. The company are known for their humorous products and appear to be leaning into the comedy aspect of Robinson's manhood mistake. It is understood they are keen for the track star to model their new 'Magnum Pouch Ball Hammock' underwear, which has a front pocket 47 per cent larger than the average. TMZ report that Robinson is open to speaking to the company, and could be set to cash in on what was initially a nightmare scenario mid-race. The incident unfolded on the home straight of the 400m hurdle race, with cameras capturing Robinson trying desperately - and failing - to keep his genitals from popping out of his shorts. Despite multiple attempts to adjust his shorts to try and prevent any further embarrassment to himself, he eventually gave up his attempts to keep himself covered and focused on finishing the race. Shinesty are well-known for their lighthearted and humorous underwear designs As he crossed the line - in first place, no less - Robinson rolled into a somersault and laid on the track with a smile at his result. The time of 48.05 seconds was just one-tenth of a second off of his personal best, and stood as his best time of the season. Robinson beat out Brazilian hurdler Matheus Lima by just six hundredths of a second. Third place was Czech native Vit Muller, who ran a time of 48.41 seconds in his home nation.
