Suzuki SA breaks ground on new headquarters
The sod-turning ceremony was held on May 21, marking a milestone for the Japanese carmaker, and reinforcing its long-term commitment to the SA market.
The company will relocate from its headquarters at Linbro Business Park to a custom-designed, 24,507m² facility that will accommodate operations and workforce. Construction is scheduled for completion by mid-2026.
The new facility will include 2,900m² of office space and 19,100m² of warehousing, along with advanced training facilities, boardrooms, a workshop and a 100-seater canteen. The warehouse will feature a clearance height of 15m for optimal vertical storage, and large yards and easy vehicle access to support efficient logistics operations.
Suzuki has been the brand to watch over the past few years. Local sales have been rising steadily, with the brand netting 5,977 unit sales in April 2025, claiming the number two best-seller spot below Toyota's 10,363 sales. The best-selling Suzuki model during the period was the Swift with 2,053 units, making it SA's best selling passenger car in the same period.
The latest Suzuki Swift has replaced the rival Volkswagen Polo Vivo as the country's best selling hatch.

It's also important to note Suzuki's contribution to Toyota's dominance. The brands have a partnership that sees Suzuki supply Toyota-badged models. The nameplates make a big portion of the larger Japanese brand's April sales wins.
'The move marks a significant chapter in our journey,' said Berto van der Lith, vice-president and CFO of Suzuki Auto SA.
'Our new headquarters will allow for further improvements in our operations and support the growth we foresee in the coming years.'

Very little to choose between Honda Amaze and Suzuki DZire
Lower price likely to sway buyers in favour of the Suzuki compact sedan. Just the other day I was discussing the Suzuki DZire, saying it is practical and budget-friendly transport. One of its main rivals, the Honda Amaze, is no different. But that does not mean it is bad in anyway. It just means that as with the Suzuki DZire, the car does what it says it will on the box. No more. No less. Honda's press release says something along the lines of, '…set to redefine the standard in practicality, convenience, and comfort'. Mostly true, although I am not sure about the Honda Amaze redefining the standard. They go on to say, '…a bold exterior design, and an interior filled with the latest convenience technology'. ALSO READ: Improved new Honda Amaze offers more without breaking the bank Same same, but different A little less accurate as none of the cars in this segment can be classified as bold, or as having the latest of anything. The simple truth is that these cars are practical motoring implements bought out of necessity and not desire. And this means the numbers from price to fuel consumption and how they affect your pocket are what count most. The Honda Amaze 1.2 Comfort MT The Citizen Motoring had on test retails for R274 900 and the Suzuki DZire 1.2 GL+ 5MT for substantially less at R246 900. Both cars are known to be hardy and not problematic. And both include a four-year/60 000km service plan and a five-year/200 000km warranty in their selling price. I think the up-front price is a big factor in why potential customers walk into a Suzuki showroom before a Honda showroom. The Honda Amaze is one of a few compact sedans on offer locally. Picture: Supplied Powered by 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine that produces 66kW of power and 110Nm of torque, the Honda Amaze is never going break any land speed records. But I thought it did a more than fine job of commuting. The Suzuki DZire has its own 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine under the bonnet. The mill produces the same sort of numbers at 60kW and 112Nm. Both drive to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission that felt lighter and less clunky on Suzuki. ALSO READ: Suzuki Dzire sedan a 'grown-up' alternative to the playful Swift Honda Amaze slightly thirstier Spending the same sort of time in both and just driving around like a regular Joe, the very non-scientific fuel consumption figures I got came in at 5.9 litres per 100km for the Honda Amaze and 5.0 litres per 100km for the Suzuki DZire. It's a small difference, but around R20 per every 100km travelled in favour of the Suzuki could just be the reason you go for it over the Honda. Despite both having relatively small city friendly fuel tanks, with the Amaze at 35 litres and the DZire at 37 litres. Both should get you to Durban without a refuel. Being compact sedans, probably the only other point mentioning is space, and more importantly boot space. The Honda Amaze offers 412 litres to the 378-litres of the Suzuki DZire. A clear win in favour of the Honda if you can get your head around how big? Or how small? The difference of 34 litres is in terms of real-world space. I can't, other than to say the Honda has a bigger boot. Both offer seating for five adults, but I wouldn't want to be piggy in the middle in the back on that non-stop trip to Durban. Picture: Supplied Suzuki DZire slightly safer The DZire outscores the Honda Amaze by 5 NCAP safety stars to 4, but on the safety front there is not much to write home about. Both have ABS, stability control and some airbags and not much else in terms of driver assistance systems. This said, I would still far rather be in control of my own fate than in the hands of a suicidal taxi driver trying to make his daily quota. Tech comes in the form of basic a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a few USB charge ports in the Suzuki, and a wireless charger in the Honda, plus a reverse camera for both. The Suzuki DZire is cheaper and lighter than the Honda Amaze on fuel, and these two factors alone might be the reason why Honda sold only 20 of them last month to Suzuki's 148. It's a numbers game!

South African vehicle sales surge to six-year high in July: these were the 15 top-selling manufacturers
Toyota was the most popular carmaker in July, with 12,694 units sold. South African new vehicle sales surged to their highest level in almost six years in July, cementing 10 consecutive months of growth for the industry. July saw a total of 51,383 vehicles being sold across the country, Naamsa | the Automotive Business Council reported, which is the highest monthly sales figure recorded since October 2019. This figure also represents a 15.6% improvement over July 2024. New passenger car sales, at 36,248 units, led the way with year-on-year growth of 20.1%, buoyed by strong rental car sales that accounted for 14% of this segment. Light commercial vehicle sales, at 11,556 units, grew by a more modest 6.9% versus the same month last year, while medium commercial vehicle sales grew by 13.9% to 703 units. Heavy commercials and buses declined by 1.3% to 2,076 units. Dealer sales accounted for 83.1% of the overall vehicle market, followed by the rental industry (11.1%), government (3.1%) and industry corporates (2.7%). The recent decision by the South African Reserve Bank to reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.00% is expected to stimulate the economy further. In addition, inflation remains subdued, and while headline inflation rose to 3.0% in June, core inflation eased slightly to 2.9% in June. 'There remains a direct correlation between the rate-cutting cycle and the upturn in new vehicle sales,' says Lebo Gaoaketse, Head of Marketing and Communication at WesBank.

'Win-win' and still pushing: Reactions to Trump tariffs
TOKYO - Some nations reacted with relief Friday after US President Donald Trump announced tariffs that in some cases were lower than threatened and delayed by a week to 7 August. But others - including Switzerland and chip powerhouse Taiwan - still hope to negotiate lower rates, and uncertainty remains over transshipments and levies on Japanese cars. Trump's announcement does not cover export giant China - currently in negotiations on a trade deal ahead of a 12 August deadline - but here is how other economies reacted: THAILAND: 'MAJOR SUCCESS' The 19% levy for Thailand and Cambodia - fresh from border clashes that killed over 40 people - is a let-off from the threatened 36%. Thailand called it a "major success" and a "win-win approach aimed at preserving Thailand's export base and long-term economic stability". The US trade deficit with Thailand hit $45.6 billion in 2024. Its main exports include machinery, vehicles and auto components. CAMBODIA: 'BEST NEWS' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called it "the best news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue to develop the country". The major manufacturer of low-cost clothing for Western brands was initially menaced with a tariff of 40%. Neighbouring Vietnam concluded an agreement with Washington at the beginning of July on a rate reduced to 20%. WHAT ABOUT TRANSSHIPMENTS? But Washington also intends to impose a 40% surcharge on goods transported to the United States via third countries - known as transshipments. This could hurt in particular nations in Southeast Asia, whose production chains are closely linked to China. Many Cambodian factories, for example, are Chinese-owned and the White House has accused the kingdom of allowing Chinese goods to stop over on the way to US markets, skirting steeper rates imposed on Beijing. Experts however are unclear on how Washington will define these "transshipment" goods. TAIWAN: STILL PUSHING Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te called its 20% tariff announced by Trump "temporary... with the possibility of further reductions should an agreement be reached." The US president had threatened to hit the island with a 32% tax and possible duties on the island's huge semiconductors shipments. Soaring demand for Taiwan's AI chips industry has fuelled its trade surplus with Washington, putting it in the crosshairs of Trump's tariff blitz. Washington "needs Taiwan in supporting resilient supply chains, in supporting manufacturing and some high-end technologies," Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said recently. SWITZERLAND: 'GREAT REGRET' Switzerland expressed "great regret" that it was hit with 39% - up from the threatened 31% - despite its "very constructive position". The levy - more than double the European Union's 15% - appeared to catch the rich Alpine nation off guard. Switzerland ranks sixth in terms of direct investment in the United States, with pharma giants Roche and Novartis announcing major spending plans in recent months. JAPAN: CAR CONFUSION A tariff of 15% agreed last week between Japan and Washington - down from a threatened 25% - is due to be applied from 7 August. But Japanese auto exports were already being hit by a 25% rate, and Tokyo wants to know when this will be lowered too. "We continue to urge the US to take prompt measures to implement the agreement, including lowering tariffs on automobile and auto parts," Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Friday. Confusion also surrounds Trump's claim that Japan - as a "signing bonus" - will invest $550 billion in America, which will recoup 90% of the profits. MALAYSIA: 'POSITIVE OUTCOME' Malaysia also achieved a lower tariff of 19% - down from 25% - which the government called a "positive outcome". "This decision by the United States reflects the strong and enduring economic ties between our two nations," Trade and Industry Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz said. SRI LANKA: 'HAPPY' Sri Lanka also expressed relief that it will face a 20% hit, a sharp reduction from the 44% originally floated, and expressed hope of a further cut. "We are happy that our competitiveness in exports to the US has been retained," finance ministry official Harshana Suriyapperuma told reporters. Around 40% of Sri Lanka's $5.0 billion of garment exports last year went to the United States.
