HRL Laboratories Launches Open-Source Solution for Solid-State Spin-Qubits

MALIBU, Calif., July 16, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HRL Laboratories developed an open-source extension to the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit (QICK), designed to control electrostatically confined semiconductor spin-qubits. Called spinQICK, HRL's solution provides a cost-effective way to rapidly utilize high performance and affordable field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware with spinQICK's firmware and software to control spin-qubits. "By creating a cost-effective solution for academic and industry partners, HRL is helping to advance the quantum computing industry and spin qubit community," said Andrew Oriani, a spinQICK Principal Investigator at HRL. Abbie Wessels, a spinQICK Principal Investigator and Lead Developer at HRL, elaborated, "As leaders in quantum science and engineering, we believe that making tools like spinQICK freely available will accelerate scientific progress and push the boundaries of what's possible in spin qubit research." The spinQICK package builds on the standard QICK API, an open source toolkit developed and deployed by Fermilab, with additional low-level extensions tailored for spin-qubit systems. Fermilab is America's particle physics and accelerator laboratory. It is the lead institution for the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center, plays a major role in the Quantum Science Center headquartered at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and is a leader in quantum networks and controls including cryoelectronics. The hardware intended for use with spinQICK is vastly more affordable than comparable custom or other commercial hardware systems currently available, without compromising on performance. This enables faster and more affordable adoption of standardized measurement and control methods used for electrostatically confined spin-qubits. The new tool also drives workforce development and quantum outreach by encouraging speedy, efficient engagement with research labs and educational institutions entering the field of semiconductor quantum computing. Sponsoring a clinic team at Harvey Mudd College, HRL is bringing spinQICK and accessible quantum computing solutions to engineering communities. This year's Harvey Mudd team recently showcased their end of year project at HRL, where they integrated spinQICK with custom analog control hardware. Key features of HRL spinQICK: Support for low-cost, off-the-shelf Xilinx Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to rapidly develop novel application-specific experimental hardware and software for spin-qubit control. Enables methods that accommodate single-spin (Loss-DiVincenzo) qubits, including: Charge-stability and electrostatic tune-up Initialization and parity readout Single-spin coherent control and characterization of key properties and gate operations, including: T1, T 2 ∗, T2-Echo, Ramsey and All-XY Exchange calibration Two-qubit gates Provides features for parameter management, plotting and demonstrations to help users get started with spinQICK. "SpinQICK is a great example of how open-source systems such as QICK grow across boundaries, including national labs, academia and industry. We are very impressed with the work done by HRL" said Gustavo Cancelo, leader of QICK development at Fermilab. The HRL spinQICK package is now available here. ----------------- HRL Laboratories, LLC, California ( the next frontiers of physical and information science. Why Lam Research (LRCX) Shares Are Trading Lower Today

What Happened? Shares of semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) fell 3.2% in the morning session after fellow semiconductor equipment giant ASML Holding (ASML) warned it could no longer confirm growth in 2026. The negative sentiment spread across the semiconductor equipment sector, dragging down peers like Applied Materials and KLA Corp. ASML, a critical supplier to the chip industry, cited increasing uncertainty from macroeconomic and geopolitical developments, specifically mentioning potential U.S. tariffs, as the reason for its cautious stance. Although ASML beat second-quarter expectations, its warning about 2026 and a weaker-than-expected third-quarter forecast overshadowed the positive results. The announcement from the world's largest chip-equipment maker has created headwinds for the entire industry, raising investor concerns about future growth prospects amid global trade tensions. The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Lam Research? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. What Is The Market Telling Us Lam Research's shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock dropped 9.7% on the news that semiconductor stocks fell after ASML, the biggest supplier of equipment used in making advanced chips, pre-announced weak earnings. ASML guided for fiscal year 2025 sales to come in between 30 billion euros and 35 billion euros, at the lower half of the range it had previously provided. Similarly, bookings for the quarter were reportedly below expectations. Reuters noted that the quarterly earnings numbers were mistakenly published a day earlier than expected. Management noted that while the potential in the AI (artificial intelligence) market remained strong, other markets were taking too long to recover, with the observed trend expected to continue into 2025. Lastly, CFO Roger Dassen projected China's contribution to overall revenue to be around 20% (down from the recent estimate of 49%), hinting at potential weakness in the region. ASML's technology is used by chipmakers like Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Samsung to make advanced chips, including those specially designed for AI workloads. Given the company's critical role in the semiconductor manufacturing process, the weak earnings and outlook could signal a possible softening in the industry. Lam Research is up 34.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $97.38 per share, it is still trading 9.5% below its 52-week high of $107.60 from July 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Lam Research's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,822. Today's young investors likely haven't read the timeless lessons in Gorilla Game: Picking Winners In High Technology because it was written more than 20 years ago when Microsoft and Apple were first establishing their supremacy. But if we apply the same principles, then enterprise software stocks leveraging their own generative AI capabilities may well be the Gorillas of the future. So, in that spirit, we are excited to present our Special Free Report on a profitable, fast-growing enterprise software stock that is already riding the automation wave and looking to catch the generative AI next.
