Fahmi: Malaysia Day 2025 celebration to be held at PICCA Convention Centre in Butterworth
GEORGE TOWN — The Malaysia Day 2025 celebration will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre @Arena Butterworth on the mainland on Sept 16, featuring a variety of programmes to enliven the event, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the celebration will begin at 8.30 pm and is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
'Malaysia Day celebrations are sometimes held in open venues, such as last year at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), and sometimes indoors, like at Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching, Sarawak, two years ago.
'What's different this time is that the Cabinet has decided that Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia will take turns hosting the Malaysia Day celebration. This aims to strengthen ties between the states and foster a greater sense of togetherness and patriotism,' he said.
He told reporters this after chairing the Malaysia Day 2025 Celebration Main Committee Meeting with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the Komtar building here today.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Penang state secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and directors and other senior officers of departments and agencies under the Communications Ministry and the Penang state government.
Fahmi said he would visit the PICCA Convention Centre today to inspect the venue and review preparations, including the programme content and schedule.
He added that he has instructed the Information Department and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, through the MADANI Community and National Information Dissemination Centre, to organise a series of events in conjunction with National Month, including community-level programmes in Penang.
Fahmi said this directive is also intended to further energise and enliven the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, while giving deeper meaning to the celebrations for the local community.
He said the celebration will also be attended by Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Earlier, Fahmi, who is on a two-day working visit to Penang starting today, paid a courtesy call on Chow at the Chief Minister's Office in Komtar, spending about 30 minutes there.
On June 11, Fahmi announced that this year's Malaysia Day celebration would be held in Penang, in line with the practice of rotating the annual event between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. — BERNAMA

42 Nadi centres now operating in Penang with new additions
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Four new National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) have commenced operations in the Pematang Pauh parliamentary constituency, increasing Penang's total NADI count to 42. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the new centres are located in Penanti (two), Seberang Jaya, and Pematang Pasir. Three began operations in May 2024, while the Kubang Semang centre opened in December 2023. 'This aligns with the one state constituency, one NADI policy directed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,' Fahmi stated during a press conference after visiting the Kubang Semang NADI. Accompanying him were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Information Department (JaPen) director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi noted that Penang previously had only three NADIs. He emphasised their potential to benefit communities through initiatives like Maxis' eKELAS digital learning and entrepreneurship training. 'These programmes help local products reach broader markets, including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and online platforms,' he added. Earlier, Fahmi tested telecommunications coverage using the MCMC Nexus app during a bus ride from PICCA@Arena Butterworth Convention Centre to NADI Kubang Semang. He reported satisfactory internet speeds, averaging 90–100 Mbps for downloads and 20–30 Mbps for uploads. However, he instructed MCMC to address connectivity gaps using Nexus data. 'The public can assess internet quality via speed tests. This data will help us hold telcos accountable,' he explained. Fahmi later attended the 'Sembang Santai Komuniti MADANI' programme at the Central Seberang Perai District Hall, joined by former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

MCMC Seeks TikTok's Clarification On Rising Parental Concerns Over PK Battle Trend
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will meet with TikTok's management to seek clarification following growing parental concerns over the popular PK Battle or Personal Knockout Battle trend among the app's young users. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry is taking the matter seriously, particularly regarding reports of children spending large sums of money on in-app gifts simply to participate in the trend. He said an official directive was issued this morning, and the ministry expects TikTok representatives to respond soon, no later than this week. 'This issue has been reported by the media, and we are taking it seriously. Since TikTok has obtained its operating licence here, they need to come forward to provide an explanation and state what steps can be taken to resolve this problem,' he told a press conference after visiting the Kubang Semang National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi also stressed that the government is committed to protecting minors from inappropriate content on social media platforms. 'That is why we have consistently said that children under 13 should not have accounts on TikTok, Instagram, or any other social media platform.
