'Hasn't served us well': NSW ditch pre-game tradition or State of Origin 3
It's one of the most theatrical entrances in Australian sport and takes the Blues players past a who's who of NSW Origin greats, whose faces adorn the tunnel walls before they reach the ground. But NSW coach Laurie Daley flagged a change to the routine after analysing their slow start in Game 2 and wants to simplify the process so the Blues can focus purely on their preparation.
"We just want to get over there and be a part of it instead of walking over there (after the warmup)," Daley told NRL.com. "I like getting on a bus and going to a game rather than walking to a game. That's what it is. I'd rather jump on a bus, leave the hotel and go from there and hopefully it's a smoother preparation."
And while Yeo admits there are parts of the tradition he loves, the NSW skipper admitted the emotion it can stir up in the players 'hasn't served them overly well' in previous years. The Blues will instead complete their warmup inside the sheds at Accor, before running onto the field through the normal tunnel, which is more in line with how the players approach regular NRL games.
'It can be a really good thing but then previous years it probably hasn't served us overly well in terms of that emotion," Yeo said about plans to scrap the tradition. "I think it's just about being a bit more normal. Any sort of big game you play at Accor normally you're in the actual Accor sheds, so I think that's more of the thinking behind it.
"It was probably getting tossed up a bit last year as well." The NSW captain cited Joseph Suaalii's infamous send-off at the start of Game 1 in Sydney last year as evidence that a more low-key entrance would be beneficial in keeping the emotions of the players in check.
'We chose to go with the tunnel and then the incident (Joseph Suaali'i getting sent off) pretty early on and you can probably go (to) hindsight but I just think it's just a bit of normality," he added. "You warm up in the sheds, you do what you normally do in big games. I think that's the way we're going to go.'

The Blues captain declared teammates Brian To'o (knee) and Payne Haas (back) certain starters for Wednesday night's series decider after both came through injury clouds to partake in an opposed session against the the Bulldogs' Jersey Flegg team on Monday. 'They've done everything that we've asked them to do and what the plan was for them leading into the game,' Yeo said on Tuesday morning. 'Bizza (To'o) did most of the session last time, got through unscathed and Payne did the parts that he needed to do.'
NSW halfback Nathan Cleary is also good to go, despite an ongoing groin issue that means he won't kick for goal again on Wednesday night. Daley and NSW team manager Frank Ponissi have both indicated that Zac Lomax will be given goal-kicking duties once more, despite only making two from five attempts in Game 2, with Latrell Mitchell and Stephen Crichton handy back-ups if he has another off night.

We have more work to do: Matildas get wake-up call
Matildas coach Joe Montemurro is confident he will have his side fit and firing in time for the 2026 Asian Cup despite overseeing a series of unconvincing results in his first camp in charge. Australia were lucky to escape with an error-riddled 3-0 win over world No.38 Slovenia in Montemurro's first game at the helm, and it was followed up by a 1-1 draw against the same opponents. Alarm bells were ringing when the Matildas slumped to a shock 1-0 loss to world No.56 Panama last week, and Australia were 1-0 down in Tuesday night's re-match before a Michelle Heyman brace and Charli Grant's 91st-minute goal rescued a 3-2 win. Charli Grant strikes in stoppage time! ⏰@TheMatildas hit the front at the death - as Grant pokes it home at the back post to grab a 3-2 lead🇦🇺 #AUSvPAN 🇵🇦 is live now on Paramount+ 📺 — Paramount+ Australia (@ParamountPlusAU) July 8, 2025 In fairness, Montemurro was missing a huge chunk of the Matildas' best XI during the four-match stint in WA, with the likes of Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Katrina Gorry, Cortnee Vine and Clare Wheeler among the absentees. Other key players such as goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, Ellie Carpenter, Alanna Kennedy and Kyra Cooney-Cross left after the Slovenia series. The Matildas have two more international windows before the Asian Cup kicks off in Perth on March 1. Montemurro's possession-based style comes with teething problems, but the former Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon coach is adamant his team will be ready for the Asian Cup. "I've had less time to prepare teams for big tournaments," Montemurro said. "The good thing about it, we're going to have a lot of players who are in season (for the next window), so they're going to be at least physically - and from a rhythm perspective - in tune. "That was the biggest thing over the last 20 days - you saw the players, the rhythms were up, down, everywhere. "All of them had to be managed physically. "We won't have that problem (next time). So at least we can go forward with players that are ready to go." Montemurro is keen to base the Matildas in Europe for the next international window (October 20-29) before having a home base for the final international window (November 24-December 2) ahead of the Asian Cup. The 55-year-old wants his players to continue to be brave with the possession-based game plan, but he felt the team fell into some bad habits against Panama on Tuesday night. "Obviously we've got some more work to do. "We fell into the trap of wanting to rush the play when we needed to slow it down, and we fell into the trap of slowing it down when we needed to go quick. "That caused a lot of technical errors, because people weren't in position at the right time. "And every time we turned the ball over, Panama looked like they were going to hurt us."

Willie le Roux set for Bok century as Rassie rings the changes for second Italy Test
Willie le Roux will earn his 100th Springbok cap, with three debutants named for the second Test against Italy. Coach Rassie Erasmus emphasised the depth and rotation of the squad, bolstered by 13 players with World Cup-winning experience. Erasmus says the Springboks are looking to improve from their last performance against Italy. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has announced his team for the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha on Saturday. Fullback Willie le Roux is set to become the 8th-ever player to reach 100 caps for South Africa, as he was named as the starting fullback for the match. The team is much changed from the one that laboured to victory against Italy at Loftus Versveld last Saturday, with Salmaan Moerat named captain and No 4 lock. Interestingly, Erasmus has named three uncapped players on the bench in prop Asenathi Ntlabakany, winger Ethan Hooker, and utility forward Cobus Wiese, brother of Jasper Wiese, who will start at No 8 for the second week in a row. Regular Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is still recovering from an injury niggle, so Marco van Staden will again wear the No 6 jumper. Seven players who will face the Azzurri for the second week in a row are Le Roux, Wilco Louw, Malcolm Marx, Marco van Staden, Jasper Wiese, all of whom have been named in the starting XV, while Ox Nche and Jan-Hendrik Wessels will make an impact off the replacements bench. There's also a return to action for Pieter-Steph du Toit, who starts at blindside flank, while Ruan Nortje partners Moerat at lock. Thomas du Toit will wear the No 1 jumper. In the backline, there is a new centre pairing in the form of Andre Esterhuizen and Canan Moodie, while Edwill van der Merwe and Makazole Mapimpi start on the wings. The starting halfback pairing are Grant Williams, who has recovered from injury and Manie Libbok. South Africa's eighth Test centurion will be joined by three uncapped players in the #Springboks ' match-23 for Saturday's return Test against Italy in Gqeberha 💯 #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 8, 2025 Erasmus named five forwards and three backs on the bench, with Wessels joining fellow front-rowers, Nche and Ntlabakanye, along with the versatile Cobus Wiese and Evan Roos, while Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Hooker will provide backline cover. Commenting on Le Roux earning his 100th Test cap, Erasmus said: 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat. 'Only seven players in Springbok history have played 100 Tests before him, and to reach this milestone is testament to the player and team man that Willie is. 'Having come a long way with him during his career, I have no doubt that he'll put the team before his own achievements this weekend, and as a team, we would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him.' Erasmus was excited to see this team in action: 'We said from the outset that we would rotate the team as we have a large and very talented squad, and all but three of the players have played Test rugby before. 'Adding to that, 13 players in this squad have won a World Cup before, 11 of whom are in the starting lineup and two on the bench, and that shows the depth we have as we continue to build our squad for the next few seasons and ultimately the 2027 Rugby World Cup. 'What makes this squad particularly exciting is that many of them have done the job for us before on the biggest stage, while Edwill has been knocking hard on the door since making his debut last season, and other players such as Asenathi, Cobus, and Ethan have made a fantastic impression on us both at their franchises and at training, and they certainly deserve this opportunity.' Erasmus was also excited for the Wiese brothers, who will become the 37th set of brothers to play for the Springboks. The last pair were Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse. 'It's always fantastic to see siblings play together, and one can sense their excitement about this memorable occasion,' said Erasmus. 'I have no doubt that will motivate them even more going into the game.' Commenting about what he expected from Italy this week, Erasmus said: 'We said from the get-go that they are a tough team and that they will test us, and we know that their performance last week will psyche them up going into this match. 'They will come hard at us and deliver another passionate performance, but we also have high standards as a team, and we know that we need to shift into a different gear this weekend to produce a performance we can be proud of. 'We had an honest and thorough review of last week's game, and we know that we must improve in every department to get the desired result and do everything we can to make this game special for Willie, the debutantes, and the country.' Springbok team to face Italy: 2nd Test 15 Willie le Roux , 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Canan Moodie, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Manie Libbok, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Ruan Nortje, 4 Salmaan Moerat (captain), 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Thomas du Toit Substitutes: 16 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 17 Ox Nche, 18 Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 19 Cobus Wiese, 20 Evan Roos, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 23 Ethan Hooker

Australia-born Lion Hansen faces 'pinch-me' moment against old team
Australia-born British and Irish Lions wing Mack Hansen will line up against his old club ACT Brumbies (DAVID GRAY) Australia-born Mack Hansen says lining up for the British and Irish Lions on the wing against his old club ACT Brumbies on Wednesday will be a "pinch-me" moment. The 27-year-old, whose mother is Irish, grew up in Canberra and spent three seasons with the Super Rugby club before a move to Connacht in 2021. Advertisement A Test call-up followed from Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, now in charge of the Lions, and Hansen has not looked back. He has started two of the Lions three games in Australia so far and is set to come off the bench against the Brumbies, Australia's strongest provincial side although they are without a slew of top players on Wallabies duty. "It's incredible," said Hansen of being back in Canberra. "It is a bit of a pinch-me moment -- not in my wildest dreams could I imagine I would be back here playing for the Lions, so it is very special. "I've got about 30 friends or family coming, I've had people coming out the woodwork asking for tickets for a while now." Advertisement Hansen will come face-to-face with "two of my best mates" in Ryan and Lachlan Lonergan, who are both in the Brumbies starting XV. "I haven't played against them in a while so it will be a nice switch-up," said Hansen. "It will be an interesting experience, I don't know how I will feel until I'm out on the field." Scrum-half Ryan Lonergan is Brumbies captain for the day and said it would be "super special" to face-off against his boyhood friend. "We've been great mates since we're about 12 really," he told reporters, adding that he was proud of what Hansen had achieved. Advertisement "We had a pretty set back three here at the time and he just took a stab and went overseas and we're all happy for him." The Lions won their two opening tour games with ease, crushing Western Force 54-7 and the Queensland Reds 52-12, but they met resistance from the NSW Waratahs in a grinding 21-10 victory. Farrell has named a strong side led by Maro Itoje to face the Brumbies, with Tommy Freeman and James Lowe starting on the wings. mp/dh
