Gospel star Rebecca Malope will be honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Basadi in Music Awards on August 2 at the Joburg Theatre.
'Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award is such an honour, I'm grateful beyond words,' she told TshisaLIVE.
Rebecca, whose real name is Batsogile Lovederia Malope, rose to stardom when she won the Shell Road to Fame competition with her gospel anthem Shine On in 1987 and has been making strides since.
The singer, dubbed 'The queen of gospel', has had a career spanning four decades with more than 36 albums to her name and more than 10-million records sold worldwide.
'To still be seen and celebrated after so many years in this industry is a great blessing from God — one I never take for granted.'
Beyond the music scene, Rebecca has earned her stripes in other avenues.
She hosted the TV show It's Gospel Time for 15 years, served as a judge on Clash of the Choirs and was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2021 for her contribution to South African arts.
While she is not done making music yet, Rebecca is also preparing to venture into the fashion industry by launching her first collection.
'I'm in my sewing studio creating a dress from scratch to mark this moment. It's not just a celebration of where I've been but of where I'm going. I'm stepping into a new chapter, adding fashion design to the journey, and I'm excited for what's ahead.'

Rapper Tony Dayimane's five-star dreams crushed by two-star reality

Rapper Tony Dayimane, whose real name is Sbongakonke Mfundo Mchunu, had his dreams of luxury shattered this weekend when he was allegedly dropped off at a modest two-star guest house in Pietermaritzburg instead of the five-star suite his team had reportedly demanded. It is believed the Imizwa hitmaker was in town to perform at the Coolest in the City Festival, but things took a not-so-cool turn before and after he hit the stage. A source close to the event spilt the hot tea to TshisaLIVE: 'He began to order the event organiser to book him into a hotel in Umhlanga and demanded to be fetched from King Shaka Airport. But due to time constraints, the organiser had to rush him to the venue as his performance time was approaching.' But the drama didn't end on stage. After his set, Tony allegedly expected the red-carpet treatment but was instead shown to a humble B&B, much to his disbelief. 'He was fuming! He even said the organiser 'umfake kumjondolo' [put him in a shack],' another insider claimed. 'The next morning, Tony and his team had to find their own way to the airport, still seething with anger.' Despite the behind-the-scenes tension, event organiser Sfiso Mshengu played it cool when contacted by TshisaLIVE: 'The event was successful and we'll be looking forward to working with Tony Dayimane in the near future.' TshisaLIVE has reached out to Tony Dayimane and his team for comment. Any updates will be included once received.

R&B heavyweight Msizi Shembe gears up for Durban July weekend

It's all systems go as Langa Res Lifestyle prepares to host its first major event during the Durban July weekend, and it's set to be nothing short of epic. Running from July 4-6, the newly launched Langa Res Lifestyle in Mariannhill, outside Durban, is making its grand entrance to the entertainment scene with a three-day celebration headlined by the Durban July Afterparty featuring the likes of Msizi Shembe, Scotts Maphuma, DJ Christos, Lulo Cafe, and many more. This marks the first large-scale event for Langa Res Lifestyle, a fresh face in Durban's hospitality and entertainment sector that opened its doors on May 31. The event is designed to introduce the venue to a wider audience and offer patrons an unforgettable experience. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Msizi Shembe says all he can say is that there'll be a great experience and vibe. 'My set is out of this world, with a bit of known and unknown, including singalong,' he said. Zandile Mchunu, Langa Res Lifestyle's manager, said: 'This is a huge moment for us, we want people to come and see who we are and experience something classy, safe and full of great energy.' According to Zandile, guests can expect a diverse musical journey, with performances across genres including Amapiano, Deep House, R&B, and Gqom. Beyond the music, the event promises a mouthwatering buffet for both VIP and general access guests, showcasing Langa Res's now-famous shisanyama offerings. Event organisers say there will be ample parking, reliable security and dedicated car guards throughout. 'We've worked hard to create a space where people can enjoy good food, quality music, and feel completely safe and relaxed,' Zandile added. As word spreads beyond Durban, Langa Res Lifestyle has begun attracting interest from guests in Johannesburg and other provinces. The Durban July Afterparty will be the crown jewel of this festive weekend, and organisers say they're ready to welcome the city and beyond for what's expected to be a premium, classy and memorable experience.
