Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Roman Anthony, Sal Frelick lead hitters to stream this weekend
On the pitching side, there are multiple starters from the Brewers and D-backs who are good enough to take advantage of low-scoring lineups. Let's take a look at the top waiver-wire options.
Matchups to Target
Red Sox @ Nationals
Boston's offense should have a productive weekend against three below-average starters and a bullpen with an MLB-worst 5.83 ERA. Anthony (50%) is hitting second in the lineup, which makes him a great option in shallow leagues. Trevor Story (37%) can contribute in a variety of ways, Abraham Toro (9%) is a good option in deeper formats and Carlos Narvaez (21%) is a playable catching streamer.
White Sox @ Rockies
There are plenty of potential streamers when Chicago's no-name lineup heads to Coors Field to take on a Colorado pitching staff with a 6.19 ERA at home. Rookie Chase Meidroth (9%) has struggled of late but is still someone to add. Lenyn Sosa (2%) and Andrew Benintendi (2%) are two boring veterans who should be productive for one weekend. And with three right-handed starters on the docket, Mike Tauchman (2%) should be the leadoff hitter each game. On the other side of the same matchup, the Rockies should score their share of runs against three mediocre right-handed starters, which makes leadoff man Tyler Freeman (14%) and cleanup hitter Ryan McMahon (31%) viable options.
Rays @ Twins
Since the beginning of June, the Twins rank last in baseball with a 5.77 ERA. And since they are using right-handed starters in all three games this weekend, the streamers for the Rays are obvious. Josh Lowe (52%) could hit leadoff in all three games, making him a good fit in shallow leagues. Those who need steals should target lefty hitter Chandler Simpson (32%), who has 23 swipes in 152 at-bats.
Brewers @ Marlins
The Brewers should have plenty of baserunners when they face three starters who each have a WHIP over 1.27 and a relief corps with a 1.33 WHIP. With all three starters throwing from the right side, lefty leadoff man Sal Frelick (42%) may be the top streamer in this article. Lower in the lineup, Isaac Collins (3%) and Caleb Durbin (16%) are deep-league options.
Blue Jays vs. Angels
Although the Angels deserve credit for having improved bullpen work in recent weeks, they are still likely to give up their share of runs during a series in which they will roll out three starters with an ERA above 4.10. Addison Barger (33%) should make an impact from his premium lineup spot, and Andres Gimenez (37%) has started to reverse a slow start to the season. Ernie Clement (37%) has a low ceiling but has hit .343 since June 1 and is eligible at four positions.

Matchups to Avoid
Reds @ Phillies
The Reds will need to run a gauntlet of effective starting pitchers when they face Jesus Luzardo, Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler. Elly De La Cruz is the only must-start Red, although Spencer Steer (who is day-to-day with a hand injury) is swinging such a hot bat that he will stay in some lineups. On the other side of the same series, the Reds will roll out rookie phenom Chase Burns, and Andrew Abbott and Nick Lodolo, who have been effective this year. That trio isn't enough to convince me to bench the Phillies' key hitters, but I would take a second look at J.T. Realmuto and Bryson Stott.
Mets vs. Yankees
The Mets will hopefully score often against Marcus Stroman on Friday, because they are less likely to succeed against lefties Carlos Rodon and Max Fried in the subsequent two games. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Juan Soto are the matchup-proof Mets. Having two lefties on the docket makes Brandon Nimmo a fringe option rather than a must-start player.
Seeking Saves
Shelby Miller, Diamondbacks, 39%
Miller may be a fixture in this space until fantasy managers give him more credit for being the full-time closer on a respectable team. He has pitched well this year (2.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) and figures to get a save chance during a series against a Royals team that tends to play close games by virtue of having a good pitching staff (5th in ERA) and a poor offense (30th in runs scored).
Seeking Steals
Sal Frelick, Brewers, 42%
This may be my easiest pick of the season. Frelick ranks 16th in baseball with 15 steals and bats leadoff against righties. He should steal multiple bases this weekend, as the Marlins will use right-handed starters in each game and have allowed 20 more steals than any other team. In deeper leagues, Joey Ortiz and Collins are excellent options for swipes.

Continued poor hitting has Braves fending off trade deadline questions after series loss to Angels
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves don't want to hear they are running out of time to prove they can still compete for a playoff spot. Continued offensive woes are making a case Atlanta could be sellers instead of buyers at the trade deadline. Atlanta came within two outs of its second shutout loss in losing two of three games to the Los Angeles Angels. The Braves dodged what would have been their fourth shutout loss in their last seven games when Jurickson Profar hit a ninth-inning homer, but it was far too little to save the listless offense Thursday night in a 5-1 loss to the Angels. The Braves were shut out by the Angels 4-0 on Tuesday night in the series opener. The Braves (39-47) are fourth place in the NL East. Manager Brian Snitker hoped the return of Profar from an 80-game drug suspension would spark the struggling offense, and Profar hit homers in back-to-back games. That wasn't enough to save Atlanta from its first home series loss to the Angels since 2005. 'So hopefully that will be an added thing for us,' Snitker said of Profar's return as the starting left fielder and No. 5 hitter. 'If we get some guys going around him.' The Braves were limited to three hits, all singles, in seven innings by Angels right-hander José Soriano, who didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base. Matt Olson had one of the hits, a first-inning single to right field that extended his streak of reaching base safely to 33 games. While Olson has boosted his batting average from .234 on May 27 to .267, others continue to struggle. Michael Harris is hitting .215 and Ozzie Albies is at .224 after each was held without a hit. Those struggles add to speculation it may be time for the Braves to shake up the lineup at the trade deadline. 'Nobody wants to hear that,' Olson said. 'We're in here competing every day. We still have playoffs on our mind and I understand there's going to be some outside noise when you have a record like we do but we still feel like we've got a good unit in here. We're just not playing as well as we want to.' The Braves also are burdened by a depleted rotation. Bryce Elder (2-6) gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings for his third consecutive loss. The Braves trailed 3-0 after two innings. 'That's on me,' Elder said. 'It's tough to get the offense on a roll when you're always coming from behind.' Elder's poor outing came one day after right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach landed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured right elbow on Wednesday. The rotation previously lost Chris Sale (broken rib), AJ Smith-Shawver (Tommy John surgery) and Reynaldo López (shoulder surgery) to injuries. ___ AP MLB:

Dodgers' legend Clayton Kershaw makes unsurprising retirement decision
The Los Angeles Dodgers saw legendary pitcher Clayton Kershaw notch his 3,000th career strikeout on Wednesday night. He spoke about the achievement and his career after the game. Kershaw struck out Vinny Capra looking to pick up the milestone in the sixth inning. Kershaw has been with the Dodgers since 2008 and has never put on another team's uniform. After the game, he unsurprisingly confirmed he would retire with the Dodgers. Advertisement "The Dodgers have stuck with me," Kershaw told reporters after the game. "It hasn't been all roses. I'm super grateful now. To say that I got to spend my whole career here, and I will spend my whole career here. I have a lot more appreciation." Kershaw became the 20th pitcher in history to reach 3,000 strikeouts. He became just the fourth left-handed pitcher to do so, joining Randy Johnson, CC Sabathia and Steve Carlton. Kershaw started the season on the injured list, but he has been a key player since his return. The Dodgers' rotation is dealing with multiple injuries, but the 37-year-old future Hall of Famer has brought some stability. Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Rōki Sasaki and Tony Gonsolin are all on the injured list. Since his return, Kershaw has a 3.43 ERA. However, he has a 2.66 ERA in his last eight starts. Follow The Sporting News On WhatsApp The Dodgers are 7-2 with Kershaw on the mound. He is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, five-time ERA champion, 10-time All-Star and former MVP. He has started 438 games for the Dodgers and is looking to help the Dodgers win back-to-back championships. More MLB: Phillies-Red Sox trade pitch brings Alex Bregman to Philadelphia

Nationals' James Wood gets 1st career 5-hit game in 11-7 win over Tigers
On the same day that James Wood announced that he'll participate in the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby, the Washington Nationals' left fielder batted 5-for-5 for the first time in his career. Wood, 22, got hits in all five of his at-bats — including a home run — in the Nationals' 11-7 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night. His big night began with a first-inning single off Tigers starter Dietrich Enns. In the second, he followed up with a two-run homer on a sinker that hung high in the middle of the strike zone. Enns looked impressive in his previous start, his first since 2021, pitching five scoreless innings against the Athletics. But he gave back a 3-0 lead almost immediately, putting four of the first five batters on base, which included giving up a three-run home run to Paul DeJong. In four innings, Enns allowed eight runs (seven earned). Advertisement Wood added an RBI single in the fourth inning, getting thrown out trying to extend his hit to a double. Yet he was back on base in with a leadoff single in the sixth off Tigers reliever Bailey Horn. The Nationals' second-year star finished off his night with one more single to lead off the eighth against Carlos Hernández. Earlier in the day, Wood announced on social media that he was joining the Home Run Derby field, the third hitter to commit to the event. His homer on Thursday gave him 23 for the season thus far, tying him for the fifth-highest total in MLB. With his 5-for-5 night, Wood boosted his average to .294, sixth-best in MLB. His .395 on-base percentage and .563 slugging average rank him third among major leaguers, as does his .958 OPS. Advertisement Any remaining question as to how highly regarded Wood is throughout MLB may have been answered on Sunday when the Los Angeles Angels made him the first batter in 21 years to be intentionally walked four times in a game. He was the fifth hitter since 1955 to receive that many intentional walks in one game, joining venerated sluggers including Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez and Andre Dawson. Wood was not selected as one of the National League starters for the 2025 All-Star Game, but should be among the reserves announced on July 6.
