Injured captain Ben Stokes ruled out of fifth test against India as England make 4 changes

Washington Post6 days ago
LONDON — England captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the fifth and final test against India with a right shoulder injury.
Ollie Pope, who bats at No. 3, will replace Stokes as captain for the test at the Oval in London, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday.
Play begins Thursday, with India trailing 2-1 in the series and needing a win to draw.
The 34-year-old Stokes was back to his inspirational best as an allrounder in last week's drawn fourth test, taking five wickets with some brilliant hostile and accurate spells, and finding his batting form again with an authoritative knock of 141 for his long-awaited 14th test century.
He became England's fourth player to get five wickets and a century in a test. Stokes is the leading wicket taker across both teams with 17 — three more than Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj , with a lower average than both.
But bowling long spells clearly took its toll on Stokes, who has struggled with injuries in recent years. He was hit by a bout of cramp on day 3.
The intensity of the series so far has led to fatigue and injuries on both sides.
India's batting star Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the fifth test with a foot fracture. He made 54 in the fourth test, despite playing with the injury.
England will also be without pacers Jofra Archer — who only recently returned to test cricket after more than four years out — and Brydon Carse. Spinner Liam Dawson is also left out in one of four changes.
Jacob Bethell replaces Stokes at No. 6 in the batting line up, while Gus Atkinson returns to bolster England's attack, along with Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue.
The fourth test ended with tensions between the teams, with Stokes saying his opposite number Shubman Gill should have accepted his offer of a draw with the match heading toward an inevitable stalemate.
But Gill chose to wait until Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar — whose watchful and stubborn long partnership helped save the test — had completed their centuries.
On Tuesday, India head coach Gautam Gambhir clashed with ground staff at the Oval. Video footage showed Gambhir in a confrontation with Lee Fortis, the lead curator at the ground. ___

RB Leipzig contact Liverpool over Harvey Elliott transfer

RB Leipzig have contacted Liverpool over the potential signing of Harvey Elliott. While talks are not currently at an advanced stage, discussions between the clubs are ongoing. The Athletic reported on July 1 that Leipzig were among the clubs interested in a move for Elliott, with Liverpool placing a transfer valuation for the midfielder in excess of £40million plus a buy-back option, or above £50m without one. Advertisement Leipzig believe the 22-year-old would be a direct replacement for Xavi Simons, who could leave the German club in the closing weeks of the transfer window. The Athletic reported on July 29 that Leipzig were in discussions with Chelsea over the potential sale of Dutch international Simons; the 22-year-old scored 10 Bundesliga goals and provided six assists in 2024-25. Elliott started just two Premier League matches for Liverpool in 2024-25, both of which came after Arne Slot's side has already secured the title. He made 28 appearances in total over all competitions, registering five goals and three assists. The central midfielder said in June that he was wary of 'wasting years of my career' due to his lack of game-time at Anfield. 'Nothing makes me want to leave,' Elliott said. 'I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But as I said, most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career.' Elliott was Player of the Tournament at this summer's Under-21 European Championship, as England sealed a second successive title with victory over Germany in June's final. The midfielder scored five goals, including one in the final and two in the semi-final defeat of the Netherlands, as one of only two England players who was a member of both the victorious 2023 and 2025 squads under Lee Carsley. Elliott has made 147 appearances for Liverpool since signing from Fulham in 2019, and spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Blackburn Rovers. The England Under-21 international has won six trophies during his time at Anfield. Additional reporting from David Ornstein (TOMAS BENEDIKOVIC/AFP via Getty Images)

Patriots corner Marcellus Dial reportedly out for season with torn ACL

The New England Patriots' secondary took another hit Tuesday, as second-year defensive back Marcellus Dial has reportedly suffered a torn ACL that will end his season. Dial had to be carted off the field after he injured his left leg during Monday's practice in an 11 vs. 11 drill in Foxboro. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss reported Tuesday that Dial has suffered a torn ACL, which will land him on season-ending injured reserve. Dial was a sixth-round pick by New England in 2024 and made the 53-man roster as a rookie after a strong training camp. He played in all 17 regular-season games last year, and while he got the bulk of his action on special teams, Dial also played 60 defensive snaps for the Patriots. Dial finished with 12 tackles and a forced fumble as a rookie. He was playing slot corner along with Marcus Jones in training camp this summer, and was in line to be a core special teams player again in 2025. But now his second NFL season is over before it had a chance to begin. Cornerback has been a tough position for the Patriots in training camp. Veteran Carlton Davis was signed to a three-year, $60 million contract in the offseason, but he has only participated in walkthrough practices this summer. Top corner Christian Gonzalez was lost to a hamstring injury last week, though the injury isn't expected to linger into the regular season. With Dial lost for the season, it will place an even bigger importance on the development on New England's younger defensive backs. Alex Austin and DJ James have been lining up as the team's top outside corners this week, and both could find themselves in important depth roles by the time the regular season arrives. New England also has Isaian Bolden, Miles Battle, seventh-round pick Cobee Minor, and undrafted rookie Brandon Crossley on their defensive back depth chart.
