I finally went to Sri Lankan restaurant Baja Subs after Eater LA contributor Fiona Chandra helped put a spotlight on it back in 2020, after which it's received accolades from numerous other publications. On a sleepy afternoon last week, I stopped in for the lamprais (also spelled lumprais or lump rice), a baked packet of short-grain rice, sambal, meat curry, eggplant curry, a boiled egg, and frikadeller, a fried ball of minced meat. The entire package is fragrant with banana leaves, balanced with spice (though there's certainly a good amount of heat throughout the dish). The name, taken from the Dutch word lomprijst, and that hefty meatball, are vestiges of colonization, but really the dish doesn't need that moniker or the meatball. Lamprais is a great first-time dish when eating solo, but on weekends, a wider array of curries and other flavors go on full display in a reasonably priced buffet. Every month, a new Korean barbecue spot opens in Koreatown, but it's not often that a specialist in naengmyeon arrives here, especially a heralded one from Seoul. Seogwan Myeokok, a well-regarded Pyongyang naengmyeon shop in Seoul, quietly expanded to Southern California with a partnership with Monica Kim, the chef and proprietor of Yellow Cow Barbecue in Gardena. Together, they took over the former Magal BBQ on Eighth Street with a sleek but smoke-filled dining room featuring Seogwan's elegant, fully organic U.S. buckwheat noodles served in the ethereal and subtle Pyongyang broth. Though my ancestors hail from the now North Korean capitol, I'm not sure I'll ever truly understand the subtlety of its famous cold noodle soup. I did, however, love the goldong naengmyeon, a drier set of tossed buckwheat noodles wrapped in a tight bun, topped with thin beef slices and surrounded by earthy banchan like seasoned mushrooms, sliced mu radish, and cucumbers. Texture and nuttiness come from toasted perilla leaves and ground sesame seeds. Mix it all together and enjoy for a satisfying precursor to the top-notch tabletop barbecue, or just have it as a light lunch. 3460 W. Since its opening nearly a decade ago, Kato has always made a strong impression with familiar, simple dishes that lean on Taiwanese cuisine. Chef Jon Yao has garnered so much praise in the past few years, including at the top of the Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants, a Michelin star, and most recently as the Best Chef: California by the James Beard Award Foundation. Yet, Yao continues to push boundaries, and one wonders what he could accomplish with a more casual restaurant that served something like this tuna dan dan noodles. Using meaty tuna from a six-foot-long line-caught fish just off of San Diego and serving them at a collab dinner with Callie chef Travis Skiward at his Petco Park-adjacent restaurant, these noodles were a revelation. Dense umami flavors from doubanjiang and preserved bean brought the trademark dan dan flavor without making it too heavy on the nuttiness (which came from Taiwanese sesame paste). Elegant pasta strands lapped up the chunky sauce, with the tuna almost falling into the background to the spices, rather than asserting itself. Tangled shreds of allium and cilantro brought freshness and crunch. Road trip eating is a unique challenge in itself. You want a meal that's filling enough to last for a few hours, but not so filling that driving becomes unpleasant. And a restaurant nice enough to take a break for a few minutes, without it turning into a two-hour affair and derailing any sense of urgency. On a recent trip back home from the Bay, I found myself searching for a dinner break around San Luis Obispo and stopped at Milestone Tavern, just down the street from Cal Poly. The expansive restaurant feels very brewpub-y, with plenty of beer taps and a menu of burgers, sandwiches, street tacos, and artichoke dip. I ordered a caprese melt, which was essentially a caprese sandwich on toasted sourdough. While it wasn't anything groundbreaking, the tomato was ripe, and the cheese sliced just thick enough. The balsamic was a touch sweet for my taste, but the drizzle wasn't too heavy, so I had no real complaints. Good pizza resides in every corner of Los Angeles. That's not hyperbole; that's simply the application of tested technique surrounding dough, toppings, and different styles in a region known for being loyal to trying something new and delicious. One of the newest entrants to the scene is Wallflour Pizza, the former pop-up turned permanent restaurant by Carolina Pedroza-Conaway and Brandon Conaway that has proven to be one of 2025's standouts with a crust that rivals any competitor in the Southland. The duo took over the former spacious Azlan space on Colorado, near Eagle Rock Boulevard, and transformed it into a colorful and cozy room where diners can enjoy expertly leavened sourdough pizza. Although this is truly some of my favorite crust, the former Quarantine Pizza Co. made a name for itself by experimenting with toppings. Definitely share the al pastor pie, but the mushroom-topped So Mush Love is where it's at for me. The owners procured the primary ingredient from local vendor Long Beach Mushrooms, which is spread across the pie alongside Grana Padano cheese, roasted garlic cream, and fresh arugula on top. As always, this is the type of crust that's best enjoyed fresh out of the oven. 'KPop Demon Hunters' shows a way for Netflix to compete with Disney in family animation
K-pop is taking charts of all types by storm — and Hollywood should take note. Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" has ranked in the top two of the streamer's global movie charts in each of the five weeks since its mid-June debut, including back-to-back weeks in the top spot. The animated film about demon-fighting Korean pop singers is, notably, gaining steam instead of slowing down. "KPop Demon Hunters" just had its best week with 25.8 million views, and Netflix said that's the first time one of its original movies has hit a new peak in its fifth week. The movie's popularity propelled one of its original songs, "Golden," to the top of the Billboard Global 200 last week, though it's since slipped to second — replaced by another K-pop hit. "KPop Demon Hunters" is now set to become Netflix's biggest animated original film ever, according to entertainment data provider Greenlight Analytics. "Netflix should absolutely continue pushing forward in the medium," Brandon Katz, the insights and content strategy director at Greenlight Analytics, said of K-pop and family animation. A Netflix spokesperson pointed to the streamer's top-10 list and an accompanying blog post. How K-pop can make Netflix more like Disney Korean shows like " Squid Game" have made waves for Netflix, which responded with a multibillion-dollar investment in the country's content. K-pop is a natural extension of that strategy. It's wildly popular around the world, as the Billboard charts show, making it an ideal fit for a global streamer like Netflix. Disney+ has taken note with a concert and documentary about BTS, one of the biggest K-pop boy bands. "The cultural interest and excitement surrounding K-pop continues to intensify," said Paul Dergarabedian, a media analyst at Comscore. He added: "The undeniable appeal of K-pop should have everyone's attention in the world of entertainment, studios, theaters, and content creators alike." Katz went a step further, venturing that "KPop Demon Hunters" could become the backbone of franchises for Netflix, which "doesn't boast a century-long library of intellectual property like its legacy media rivals," specifically those that are family-friendly. Sing-along franchises, especially those with K-pop, may be the icing on the cake. Netflix could create condensed sing-along versions of the hit songs from "KPop Demon Hunters" to keep its momentum going. "It's the perfect modernization of Disney's long-running emphasis on family-friendly musicals," Katz said. Family matters "KPop Demon Hunters" isn't just a welcome win for Netflix's original film business — it also may be a blueprint for competing with rival Disney in family and animation. Netflix set out to " beat Disney in family animation," cofounder and former CEO Reed Hastings told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. But despite its best attempts, the streamer hasn't achieved that goal. Although Netflix has had many family animation hits on its platform, they've mostly come from elsewhere. Popular kids series CoComelon generated huge viewership, but the cartoon is going to Disney+ when its Netflix deal ends in 2027. And while theatrical hits like "Minions" and "Despicable Me 4" topped the charts on Netflix, they were licensed from Universal's Illumination. By contrast, "KPop Demon Hunters " is a Netflix original, though it was produced by Sony Animation and not the streamer's in-house team. The streaming giant could keep using these production partnerships while its own team masters the craft. Netflix should make cracking original family films a priority, Dergarabedian said. PG-rated films have outgrossed their PG-13 peers at the box office in 2023, 2024, and 2025, he said, citing Comscore data. That includes blockbusters like Universal's "Super Mario Bros. Movie" and the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon," plus Disney's "Lilo & Stitch." Katz said that "theatrical animation is arguably the best bang for your buck genre in Hollywood" since the pandemic. He said Netflix must nail the family genre, which already accounts for 15% of its global viewership, to keep Gen Alpha kids from going to YouTube. "Establishing an emotional connection with young audiences provides Netflix with a direct path to the next generation of disposable income spenders," Katz said.

For spectacular Blackpink concert, Rogers Stadium finally gets it right — with one glitch
3.5 stars (out of 4) Rogers Stadium, Toronto, Tues., July 22, 2025 The biggest girl group on the planet just touched down in Toronto and it looks like Rogers Stadium has finally gotten something right — it was ready. Blackpink, one of the K-pop groups that has inspired your kid to learn Korean, brought out its legion of fans to the city's newest and largest concert venue, located in Downsview Park . After many highly publicized operational gaffes since opening a month ago, last night was different. Staff was prepped, crowds were moving, and even the performers themselves remarked from the stage that it was a beautiful night for their very first time playing Toronto. If you want to know what it's like to do perfect crowd control with an audience of almost 50,000, you start by making them Blackpink fans or Blinks, as they are called. By the time the show started, many people had been there for hours. Any self-respecting K-pop fan understands that showing up early is being on time. This gives ample time to check out the merch and fan fashion. Last night, Blinks wore black, pink, frills, bows and immaculate makeup. You would not mistake this crowd for any other fandom. The Ferris wheel on the grounds added to a chill, festival vibe, and I'm happy to report I didn't wait in any lines at all (I skipped the exorbitant official merchandise, which had the longest queues). Staff, from the TTC to the venue, worked to usher people along quickly. Toronto has been talking about the logistical issues of this venue while Blackpink fans have talked at length about Blackpink's world tour, which launched in Seoul earlier this month. The tour is called Deadline, although it hasn't been explained why. Will this be their last? That's hard to imagine as they are at the absolute top of their game, weaving hit after hit into a tight set list built into five acts plus an encore. They do it looking like they don't even break a sweat. Jennie, Lisa, Rosé and Jisoo began the show with three megahits in a row, starting with the fanfare of 'Kill This Love,' the slow chants of 'Pink Venom' and their trademark call-out at the top of 'How You Like That' ('Blackpink in your area!'). Fireworks began popping off from the very start of the show, with plumes of confetti exploding no less than three times. It's really lovely to watch a crowd slowly look up into the sky with delight, watching pretty bits of paper drift across a stadium. The name of the game here is spectacle, with 16 dancers, three massive screen displays and plenty of pyro. My meter for gauging the crowd's response was how much my bleacher seats shook. Yes, Blinks can shake a stadium. Favourites included 'Like Jennie,' 'Fxck Up the World,' 'Ddu-du Ddu-du,' and 'APT,' last year's inescapable radio hit based on a Korean drinking game. The only technical glitch came at a moment that should have been the beat drop of the entire concert. When screens lit up with the word 'Jump,' the title of their new song that producer Diplo calls their 'Blackpink rave anthem,' everyone leapt to their feet, light sticks in hand, expecting to be released into a dancing frenzy. Instead, there was a long, awkward pause. The crowd, fairly quiet and respectful, began to chant, 'Blackpink!' Finally, the screens, clearly malfunctioning, parted as they were meant to do, and the group streamed out with their dancers. Judging by the choreographed party scene on stage, most attendees couldn't tell anything was amiss. If there's anyone who deserves a raise from last night, it would be a nameless, enterprising K-pop fan in the marketing department at Tim Hortons. Blinks know that Rosé begins her solo miniset behind the scenes, as a camera follows her route to the stage. At last night's show, her bandmates handed her a box of Timbits and a coffee and Rosé did her whole shtick indulging in this most Canadian coffee-and-donut combo. Nothing is casual or improvised at this level. And let's not kid ourselves that this entire spectacle isn't about sales. I saw official Blackpink in Toronto jerseys going for $190. A commercial embedded into the show? At least it was clear, obvious and cute. In between the high-octane hits, and each member showing off her solo persona (Rosé the singer-songwriter, Lisa the playful vixen , Jennie the entertainer, Jisoo the sweet flower), the group stopped to chat with the crowd. This is a key element of K-pop shows and the more unplanned and natural-seeming the conversation is, the better. For fandoms that are so intensely digital, and in a world where fans are truly at the centre, K-pop acts know to take time to chat, like friends would, from the stage. What did Blackpink want to say to Toronto? 'I heard that this is a very newly built stadium and that a bunch of people struggled to get here on time because it's such a far walk over.' Please don't pull a Coldplay and call this stadium 'weird,' I thought. 'We want to thank everybody for putting in the cardio,' Rosé finished. They are infinitely charming, that's for sure. They also pleaded with the audience multiple times to put down their phones and instead raise their hands high. It's a nice try, but this just won't happen. But now we know, Blackpink members are tired of the phones. They want more in-the-moment connection. Over the past few years, Blackpink members have focused on solo music, sponsorships (their brand endorsements read like a list of French fashion houses and the directory at your local mall) and acting ( Lisa in 'White Lotus,' Jennie in 'The Idol' with The Weeknd). Given that the crowd responded to them as warmly for their solo works as they did for their Blackpink oeuvre, one has to wonder what's next? There is time to figure it out online, Blinks. The Deadline world tour takes them to the U.S., Europe and Asia until January of next year. The world will be watching through clips online, but nothing beats being there in person, in the moment, outdoors on a perfect summer night.
