Sona Comstar goes local, set to produce rare earth magnets in India for EVs to cut reliance on China: Details here

Sona Comstar, India's leading importer of rare earth magnets, is set to begin domestic production of these critical components used in electric vehicles (EVs). This move aligns with the government's push to incentivise local production and reduce dependency on China. China currently dominates the global rare earth magnet market, producing around 90 per cent of the world's supply. Recent export restrictions imposed by China in April in response to US tariffs have forced governments and companies worldwide to seek alternative sources. India, which has the world's third-largest car market and its fifth-largest reserves of rare earths, is working on a new programme to incentivise magnet production locally to wean off China. Gurgaon-based Sona Comstar, officially known as Sona BLW Precision Forgings, is the first Indian company to announce plans for local magnet production after the government's program became public, Reuters reported. "Being the largest importer of rare earth magnets, we are the single largest affected party in the country. We have to look at India's self-sufficiency on magnets and are working with the government on it," Sona Comstar CEO Vivek Vikram Singh told Reuters in an interview. The company supplies gears and motors to car makers such as Tesla and Stellantis, and imported around 120 metric tonnes of magnets from China in the last financial year. Singh said the company has the funds for local manufacturing, citing its five-fold increase in revenue to more than $400 million over the past five years. Any plans to mine and process rare earths would take years to develop, so will not provide an immediate solution to reducing reliance on China. Sona Comstar earlier had plans to import 200 tonnes of magnets this year to meet the growing needs of its EV customers which make up about a third of its revenue, Singh said. Geographically, the US currently contributes about 40 per cent of Sona Comstar's revenue, ahead of India and Europe. For future growth, Sona Comstar is looking at acquiring more customers in China, Japan and South Korea. The company's ambitious plans for growth come amid the sudden death of Sona Comstar Chairman Sunjay Kapur in June, which sent the company's shares lower over fears over its future direction. The company appointed Jeffrey Mark Overly as its new chairman. Singh, however, said this will not change the company's course as it is run by a professional team of executives and has the kind of "management bench strength" needed to overcome crises and disruptions, the news agency reported.

Why Karnataka Bank's top brass stepped down amid auditor red flags

The Board of Directors of 100-year old Karnataka Bank on Sunday accepted the resignation of the bank's Managing Director and CEO Srikrishnan Hari Hara Sarma and Executive Director Sekhar Rao amid red flags raised by the auditors about certain spending. Sarma has cited personal reasons, including his decision to relocate back to Mumbai, for his resignation. His resignation will be effective from July 15. Rao submitted his resignation citing inability to relocate to Mangaluru and other personal reasons. His resignation will be effective from July 31. While the Mangaluru-based bank, with 957 branches, has no specific promoter, the entire stake is held by public, NBFCs, FPIs and mutual funds. As of the quarter ended March 31, 2025, Karnataka Bank reported total deposits of Rs 1.04 lakh crore. The bank's shares fell by 5.51 per cent to Rs 196.25 on the BSE on Monday morning session. The resignations of Karnataka Bank's MD and ED came roughly six weeks after the bank's auditors raised concerns over certain expenditures made by the two executives. These expenses, which exceeded their delegated authority and were not approved by the board, included Rs 1.53 crore in spending deemed recoverable from the concerned directors—comprising Rs 1.16 crore on consultants and Rs 37 lakh on revenue and capital items. While the official reason cited for their exit was personal, including relocation-related factors, the timing suggests deeper issues, said an analyst, adding that the auditor's findings pointed to governance lapses and internal friction, prompting uncertainty among investors and triggering a broader leadership shake-up at the bank. On the Notes to Accounts contained in the audited Financial Statements for the FY25 leading to emphasis of matter in the Auditor's Report, the bank stated that 'it has been discussed and amicably resolved'. The bank has formed a search committee to identify suitable candidates for the position of a new Managing Director & CEO as well as a new Executive Director. 'The bank has appointed an experienced senior banker as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) who will assume charge on July 02, 2025. Additionally, substitute arrangements are also being made subject to the regulator's approval,' the bank said in an exchange filing. 'The bank continues to take necessary steps to ensure operational stability and assures various stakeholders that it is well capitalised and continues to be sound as hitherto. The transformational journey embarked upon by the bank will continue unhindered,' the filing said.

Drugmaker Sigachi Industries said Monday's (June 30, 2025) fire incident at its plant in Hyderabad has damaged the core manufacturing infrastructure and operations at the facility are being paused temporarily. The operations are being paused for an estimated 90 days to facilitate replacement and restoration of affected equipment and structures, it said in a filing to the stock exchange without mentioning the number of people who died and injured. A thorough on-ground assessment of the situation is in progress and 'we are coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure all safety and support protocols are followed,' the company said Sigachi said it operate three manufacturing facilities for microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The Hyderabad unit where the incident occurred was one of them and contributed approximately 6,000 MTPA out of our total operating capacity of 21,700 MTPA. The balance production comes from the company's other two facilities in Gujarat, which continue to operate normally. Efforts are being made to optimise production from those units during the interim period, it said. The company's shares took a beating in the wake of the incident, slumping 11.58% compared to the previous close to end the day ₹48.79 apiece on the BSE. The Hyderabad facility is 'fully insured and we are in the process of initiating the necessary claims as per standard procedures. 'The incident has unfortunately resulted in loss of human life and there may have been individuals who sustained injuries. While the exact number of injuries is currently being confirmed, the well-being of our personnel remains our foremost priority. Sigachi deeply mourns the loss of life and extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We are extending all possible support to those affected,' it said.
