It started with a scrunchie. How Strider Patton is building a girl dad community, one braid at a time.
When Strider Patton learned that he and his wife, Brooke, were expecting a daughter, he immediately went into girl dad mode.
'The image of me braiding her hair just flashed in my mind,' the 40-year-old professional artist from Half Moon Bay, Calif., tells Yahoo Life. 'I just started to think about what it would be like to have a little special time for us every day.'
First, though, he needed to learn how to braid. Patton decided to do 'what every millennial dad does,' he says, and hop on YouTube. But many of the videos he saw were by moms who already knew the basics.
'They were just flying through the simple stuff,' he says, like how to tie a hair tie. Patton sifted through dozens of videos to get the fundamentals down.
It would be a few years before his daughter, Imogen, now 5½, had enough hair for Patton to work with, and the beginning of their braiding adventures was a little hairy. 'I was horrible at it,' he recalls. 'But she [didn't] care because we're just playing and having fun.'
Patton soon got the hang of it, though, and their daddy-daughter styling sessions have since become treasured time together. He never imagined other dads would be inspired to follow suit.
Imogen regularly received compliments on her hair at school and on the playground. Everyone wanted to know: 'Did your mommy do your hair?' Imogen very matter-of-factly would reply, 'No, Dad braids,' and the line stuck. Soon after, dads were approaching Patton on the playground for pointers. Sensing an audience, he started publishing how-tos online last June under the handle Dad Braids. His instinct proved right: His first TikTok got more than 30,000 views.
He's since made more than 120 videos and amassed more than 139,000 followers on TikTok (more than 237,000 on Instagram). Every day, he receives messages from married, single and widowed dads from around the world. The content is resonating, he thinks, because it's tailored to his audience.
'I'm going in real time and showing very simple moves,' says Patton, who is also dad to Hudson, 1. 'I'm explaining the different types of brushes and hair care products because these are things no guys know about.'
Still, Patton insists he's no expert and that he's learning right alongside his viewers. That beginner's mindset is important to his message, he says. The goal isn't perfect braids — it's connection.
'I think it's really great for us to show our kids, 'Look at me, I'm taking on a challenging new task,'' he says. ''You're learning how to ride a bike? I'm learning how to braid hair. It's hard, so let's struggle together, but let's have fun while we're doing it.''
While Patton and his family have been surprised by his success, he also thinks there is a simple explanation.
'I think what I've tapped into,' he says, 'is one of the most passionate and most overlooked audiences on the internet: girl dads. This is surface-level braids, but really, it's [about] how to be a good dad.'
Dad Braids is currently a passion project but might not be for long. Patton sells merch and will soon release courses for dad braiders of all levels. He even wants to make different colored scrunchies that convey expertise, similar to martial arts belts. He laughs when he reflects on how his life has changed over the last year.
'Ten months of Dad Braids just annihilated 10 years of my art on Instagram,' he says. 'It's one of the most meaningful things that I've ever done, and I never could have ever seen this coming.'
Get the right gear. Patton was skeptical at first, but now fully gets the hype behind detangling brushes and sprays. He keeps all his braiding equipment corralled in a metal toolbox.
Distract her. To get your little one to sit still, Patton recommends having her play with dolls, Legos or kinetic sand.
Prevent bad hair days. 'The best way to tackle a bad hair day is the night before,' he says. 'It is an absolute game changer.' He recommends a loose braid overnight.
Start from the bottom. Don't brush top to bottom; lightly brush the ends and work your way up to avoid knots.
Don't force it. It's OK if it doesn't always go as planned. 'There should be no forcing or shaming,' Patton says. 'You want the braiding time to be sacred and beautiful.'

Elliot Page shares photo with actress Julia Shiplett, hinting at new romance
Elliot Page appears to be sharing a personal update this Pride Month. The actor posted a sweet selfie with 'Overcompensating' actress Julia Shiplett on Instagram Saturday. In the photo, Page beams with a wide smile as he leans his head on Shiplett's shoulder, with the two standing on a rainbow-painted road. Page sparked romance rumors with the caption, which included a rainbow emoji and a double-heart emoji, seemingly hinting at a budding relationship. ABC News has reached out to representatives for Page and Shiplett for comment but did not hear back immediately. Page, who came out as transgender in December 2020, has been candid about his past relationships. In his memoir " Pageboy," he reflected on past romances with co-stars and friends, including Kate Mara and Olivia Thirlby. He was previously married to Emma Portner from 2018 to 2021. In a joint statement shared with ABC News in January 2021, the former couple announced their separation. "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer," the statement read at the time. "We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends." Since transitioning, Page has embraced a renewed perspective on life. In 2023, he opened up during ABC's " The Freedom to Exist – A Soul of a Nation Presentation," saying, "I'm feeling that joy every day. I really am.' Page also added at the time that living as his authentic self has transformed his life. "What it has allowed me is what feels like truly being alive for the first time," he shared.

Jayne Mansfield's Death, Missing People, And More Horror
Do you love all things weird, dark, and creepy? Subscribe to the That Got Dark newsletter to get your weekly dopamine fix of the macabre delivered RIGHT to your inbox! Hello, and welcome to That Got Dark! I'm Crystal, and I'm guilty of spending way too much time going down dark rabbit holes. Yes, I know it's not the ~smartest~ thing to do late at night, but sometimes (OK, every time) I just can't help myself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The thing is, much like walking into a haunted house, I don't like doing it alone. So, every week, I'll gather the darkest and creepiest things I find on the internet (and beyond) to share just with you, my spooky-loving friend. So, tuck yourself in tight and get out that flashlight…it's about to get dark. Recently, I found out that in 2019, a man in the UK died after eating a sample of a fish cake that was so hot it burned his throat. And it turns out the burn was so bad it actually caused his throat to swell up to the point where he choked to death less than 12 hours later. Just to really hammer home how nasty the burn was, a pathologist who performed a post-mortem examination on the victim said that this case was so incredibly rare that he'd only seen that kind of damage in people who had breathed in smoke in house fires. And now I'm avoiding fishcakes for the rest of my life. Occasionally, I like to ask the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about the most mysterious, cult-like, bad-vibes towns in the United States they've ever been to. And you'd be shocked at how many responses I get each time (or maybe not). This week's spotlight: Harrison, Arkansas. 'There used to be several billboards on the main highway. Lots of white pride radio saying things like, 'Is it wrong to love your kind?' There is only one billboard now. It says, 'Let's Go Brandon' by the Christian radio network. I think it is a KKK stronghold. There are YouTube videos of people protesting the old signs. Local people warning the protesters to watch their backs, etc."—Anonymous Wikipedia is like the Wild West. It's vast, seemingly endless, and sometimes you can find some extremely weird (and horrifying) things out there. This week's spotlight: the Disappearance of Tara Calico. Tara Calico, a 19-year-old from Belen, New Mexico, disappeared on Sept. 20, 1988, while riding her bike along the highway. Despite extensive searches and media coverage, including episodes of Unsolved Mysteries and America's Most Wanted, Tara was never found. But what makes the case extra creepy is the fact that in July 1989, a horrifying Polaroid photo of a young woman (who looked like Tara) and a child, both with their mouths duct-taped and seemingly tied up in the back of a van, showed up in a parking lot in Florida. The photo was analyzed several times, including by the FBI, but the results were inconclusive as to whether it was actually Tara in the photo. In 1998, Tara was declared legally dead, and her presumed death was ruled a homicide. Recent investigations have identified potential suspects, but the case still remains unsolved. Jayne Mansfield — Died: June 29, 1967. Cause of Death: Traffic collision How she died: Mansfield was traveling in a 1966 Buick Electra with her driver, her lawyer/boyfriend Sam Brody, and three of her children (including actress Mariska Hargitay) when their car crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer. The Buick went under the trailer, destroying the top of the car and killing Mansfield, Brody, and the driver instantly. The children in the backseat miraculously survived with only minor injuries. There's a popular urban legend that Mansfield was decapitated in the crash, and while she certainly sustained severe head trauma, she was not decapitated. The accident famously led to the creation of "Mansfield bars,' which are guards now required on the rear of semi-trailers to prevent similar accidents. The Ugly Stepsister (2025) What it's about: A clever and extremely twisted body horror retelling of the classic fairytale you should watch it: This satirical, dark, and gory retelling from the perspective of one of the 'ugly' stepsisters will make you scream and cringe in pain alongside the characters. Seriously…it's A. you can watch it: Streaming for free on AMC+ or for rent for $3.99 on Prime Video Aileen Wuornos Known as "The Damsel of Death," Wuornos was a serial killer who murdered and robbed six men (and possibly a seventh) while doing sex work in Florida from 1989 to 1990. Although Wuornos initially claimed she acted in self-defense, she later recanted and said she wasn't a victim and that she simply robbed and killed her victims for money. Wuornos was executed on Oct. 9, 2002. Her last meal: Wuornos declined the last meal option and instead opted for a cup of coffee. Well, I hope I didn't make your Sunday scaries more…scary?! In the next issue, I'll talk about the truly messed-up thing that happened to Mariska Hargitay after the car crash with her mom (Jayne Mansfield, like we talked about above), a plane crash that was completely preventable, and a Disney Channel star who died too young. Until then, stay safe, keep the lights on, and I'll see you for another horrifying trip down the rabbit hole… Love this kind of content? Subscribe to the That Got Dark newsletter to get a weekly post just like this delivered directly to your inbox. It's a scary good time you won't want to miss.
