, told a Delhi court Friday that ED's National Herald money-laundering case was "truly a strange case."
Singhvi argued before judge Vishal Gogne that it was "an alleged case of money laundering without any property and without use or projection of property." The court is hearing arguments on whether to take cognisance of ED's chargesheet against Sonia and Rahul.
Calling the case "unprecedented," Singhvi said: "Not an inch of property moved from Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) to Young Indian Pvt Ltd (YI). No Congress leader gained property or money.
Yet this is called money-laundering."
ED alleges Sonia and Rahul, with late Congress netas Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, Sam Pitroda, and YI, fraudulently took over AJL's assets worth Rs 2,000 crore.
Singhvi questioned the 11-year gap between AJL's restructuring in 2010 and ED's action in 2021. He said, "To have National Herald in a body not linked to Congress is like Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark." - Vineet Upadhyay

Protests erupt over smart meters, tariff hikes
Vijayawada: A massive protest spearheaded by the CPM against the implementation of smart electricity meters and soaring power tariffs rocked Vijayawada on Friday. Hundreds of consumers and activists converged at APCPDCL head office, submitting over 50,000 applications to demand the removal of installed smart meters, a reduction in electricity adjustment charges, and the cancellation of agreements with corporate entities like Adani and SECI. The protestors creatively displayed the 50,000 applications around the CPDCL office, with many wearing placards around their necks declaring 'No Smart Meters'. Women, particularly incensed, wore their petitions to express their anger. Loud slogans denouncing smart meters, Adani's alleged exploitation, and the burden imposed by the rulers filled the air. CPM leaders asserted that the current coalition government has betrayed the public on electricity, imposing a staggering Rs 15,485 crore in adjustment charges despite promises of no hikes. They highlighted how small industries and businesses are struggling to pay bills, leading to closures and job losses. Speakers criticised the government for ordering the installation of Adani smart meters, calling it 'deplorable' given that coalition leaders previously advocated for their destruction. The protest also condemned the replacement of two crore working meters with prepaid Adani smart meters, imposing Rs 25,000 crore burden on citizens, to be collected over 93 months. 'These aren't just smart meters; they're like Adani bombs, exploding in every home every month,' warned a CPM leader, referring to the technology that allows Adani offices in Gujarat and Delhi to control meters remotely. Recalling the year 2000 electricity protests where three activists were killed in Hyderabad, leaders warned that interfering with 'power (electricity)' had cost Chandrababu 'power (authority)' then. They urged the government to reduce charges, halt smart meter installations, cancel corporate agreements, and honour their promises, or face a widespread, unified movement across the State.

Skill Portal must be ready by Sept 1: Lokesh
Guntur: Minister for HRD and IT Nara Lokesh announced that the coalition government is developing a Skill Portal to connect youth with industries, aiming to create 20 lakh jobs in the state. During a review meeting with the AP State Skill Development Corporation at his Undavalli residence, he directed officials to launch the portal by September 1. The portal, aligned with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's suggestions, will feature automatic resume generation, skill assessments, and job vacancy notifications to help youth enhance their skills and secure employment. Lokesh emphasized a 90-day public awareness campaign to promote the portal and instructed officials to coordinate with departments for comprehensive data collection. He also mandated quarterly job melas in every constituency and action plans to improve district employment offices. The state will be divided into clusters for targeted skill development Lokesh revealed that the central government has allocated Rs. 600 crore for Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under a hub-and-spoke model through a centrally sponsored scheme. Discussions also covered the OMCAP division, with suggestions to collaborate with foreign embassies to facilitate overseas employment opportunities. Key attendees included Secretary Education Kona Sasidhar, AP Skill Development Corporation MD & CEO G Ganesh Kumar, Director of Collegiate Education Narayana Bharat Gupta, Advisor for International Skilling & Mobility Seetha Sharma, and APSSDC Executive Director K Raghu.

‘Big Beautiful Bill' passes US Congress
Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday secured a major political victory when Congress narrowly passed his flagship tax and spending bill, cementing his radical second-term agenda and boosting funds for his anti-immigration drive. The bill underlined the President's dominance over the Republican Party, which had been wracked by misgivings over a text that will balloon the national debt and gut health and welfare support. A small group of opponents in the party finally fell into line after Speaker Mike Johnson worked through the night to corral dissenters in the House of Representatives behind the "One Big Beautiful Bill." The bill squeezed past a final vote 218-214, meaning it can be on Mr. Trump's desk to be signed into law on the July 4th Independence Day holiday. "One of the most consequential Bills ever.
