Bodyguards' fitness app reveals locations of Swedish leaders

Time of India12-07-2025
LONDON: Trying to keep fit with runs through Central Park, a jog around a tropical island and bicycle ride around Stockholm, bodyguards in Sweden inadvertently revealed secret locations of Swedish leaders they were assigned to protect.

An investigation by a Swedish newspaper revealed bodyguards for Sweden's royal family and PM Ulf Kristersson uploaded their workout routes to Strava, a fitness app that allows users to map and share their movements. The popular app has built a global social media community, but users' enthusiastic uploads have also raised questions about data privacy, especially among security personnel.
In Sweden, the data reveal added to security concerns of a country that was recently rattled by what it called an "act of sabotage" against an undersea cable.
This week, Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported it tracked over 1,400 workouts by seven bodyguards over last year. The data showed the bodyguards trained in the Alps, along Ukraine's border with Poland and at a military base in Mali. Sweden's security police confirmed the data was linked to some employees of secret service.
Their routes gave away the address of the PM's private residence. The Strava data also revealed a high-level meeting in Norway in June 2024, unannounced at the time, between Kristersson and leaders of Norway and Finland.
Sweden's security police said it was investigating the effect of the publicised data. "To be clear, there has not been a leak or breach of user data," a Strava spokesperson said in a statement Friday.

During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan likely used NATO-style aerial tactics taught by China

According to sources in the know, one of the many tactics used by the NATO countries when it comes to air force, especially in air-to-air scenarios, is where one aircraft launches a missile, while another provides guidance. The possibility has raised concern at multiple levels, both in India and the western world, ThePrint has learnt. New Delhi: During India's Operation Sindoor, especially on 7 May, Pakistan may have used NATO aerial tactics learnt from the Chinese, who in turn were taught by former Western air force pilots and operators that Beijing had clandestinely hired over the last several years. This tactic is known as the 'launch-and-leave', where the aircraft launching the missile remains cold and turns hot only when it is about to fire the missile. Sources explained that after launching the missile, the aircraft manoeuvres away to avoid any enemy fire. The missile is then taken over by another aircraft, which is equipped with more advanced radar or targeting systems. It is the second aircraft that guides the missile to the target, a tactic that allows one to target the enemy at long distances or in a heavy air defence environment. It was the Chinese who developed this tactic, and have designed their weapon systems along the lines, sources said. It is believed that the Chinese J-10s that Pakistan operates and the Swedish Saab 2000 Erieye, an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, are capable of undertaking such operations, they further explained. They said that the Chinese have taught Pakistan this tactic. Asked how the Chinese have been able to copy NATO tactics, sources explained that China has been clandestinely hiring foreign pilots and operators, especially from the Five Eyes countries—Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK and the US. Way back in 2022, the UK defence ministry had said that former British military pilots were being lured to China with large sums of money to pass on their expertise to the Chinese military. Up to 30 former UK military pilots are thought to have gone to train members of China's People's Liberation Army. According to a report published in Der Spiegel in 2023, several former Luftwaffe pilots have been training the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) pilots over the past decade. The report had quoted unnamed German security officials as saying that it is 'very possible that the pilots have passed on military expertise and confidential operational tactics, and even practiced attack scenarios, such as an offensive against Taiwan.' In 2024, the US and its intelligence partners had warned that China is working to recruit current and former Western military pilots and other service members to help strengthen Chinese air power and gain insights into Western aviation tactics. 'China's (PRC) People's Liberation Army (PLA) continues to target current and former military personnel from North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nations and other Western countries to help bolster the PLA's capabilities,' a joint bulletin put out by the US and its Five Eyes partners had said. It added that the PLA is using private companies in South Africa and China to hire former fighter pilots from Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Australia, the US, and other Western nations to train PLA Air Force and Navy aviators. 'The PLA wants the skills and expertise of these individuals to make its own military air operations more capable while gaining insight into Western air tactics, techniques, and procedures. The insight the PLA gains from Western military talent threatens the safety of the targeted recruits, their fellow service members, and US and allied security,' the security warning had said. It had added that poaching Western military expertise enables the PLA to advance its air capabilities, improve planning for future operations, and better counter Western military strategies, all to the detriment of the US, its partners and allies, and their service members. 'The most sought-after targets to-date have been military pilots, flight engineers, and air operations center personnel. The PRC has also targeted technical experts with insight into Western military tactics, techniques, and procedures. Western recruits who train the PLA may increase the risk of future conflict by reducing our deterrence capabilities and put their military colleagues at risk in such a conflict,' the bulletin had said. The Escobar Fold phones were a scam after all

Remember those unbelievably cheap foldable phones branded with Pablo Escobar 's name? Turns out they were exactly what they looked like, too good to be true and a scam. Olof Kyros Gustafsson , the 32-year-old Swedish mastermind behind Escobar Inc. , pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges, finally putting an end to one of tech's most brazen scams. Gustafsson convinced thousands of people to shell out $399 for the " Escobar Fold 2 ," promising cutting-edge foldable technology at a fraction of Samsung's $2,000 Galaxy Fold price. The catch? Most never received their phones. Those lucky few (mostly influencers) who did get a package found Samsung Galaxy Folds wrapped in cheap gold foil, Escobar Fold phones were not made by Escobar Inc. The Escobar Inc caught attention when Marques Brownlee famously unboxed an Escobar Fold 2 on YouTube, revealing it was simply a Samsung Galaxy Fold with gold foil stickers slapped on top. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Techno Mag Learn More Undo Even more telling, Gustafsson later admitted in company correspondence that the Fold 2 was "an overstock purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Fold" bought from retailers and wholesalers. The first device, the Fold 1, bore striking similarities to the FlexPai from Chinese manufacturer Royole, though Gustafsson denied any connection. Now, that Fold 2, per Marques, was sent by Escobar Inc. themselves. That tells that Gustafsson deliberately sent sample devices to influencers to drum up interest, knowing the buzz would drive more orders. It worked, The videos inadvertently gave the fake company some credibility, eventually pocketing over $300,000 from unsuspecting customers. Books instead of Folds These thousands of people who paid around $399, would get a "Certificate of Ownership," over their mail. After that one would hope for their Escobar Fold phone. Instead they received Pablo Escobar's brother Roberto's autobiography and a congratulatory flyer featuring scantily-clad women. When buyers demanded refunds, Gustafsson used these book shipments as "proof" that products had been delivered, successfully blocking refund requests through payment processors. The company didn't stop at phones. Gustafsson also hawked "Escobar Flamethrower," a dupe of Elon Musk's Boring Company flamethrower, an "Escobar Gold 11 Pro Phone" that was supposedly a refurbished iPhone, and even "Escobar Cash," that the Escobar Inc. marketed as the world's first physical cryptocurrency. None of these products existed beyond promotional materials and the occasional sample sent to reviewers. CEO faces 20 years jailtime for $1.3M fraud Federal investigators eventually caught up with Gustafsson's operation. He was arrested at his home in Marbella, Spain, in December 2023 during a joint raid by Spanish police and U.S. Internal Revenue Service agents. After unsuccessfully seeking asylum in Spain to avoid extradition, he was brought to Los Angeles to face charges for 115-count federal indictment Court documents show Gustafsson laundered over $307,000 through bank accounts in the United States, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates during just the first six months of the scheme. Gustafsson sentencing is scheduled for December 5, and he faces faces up to 20 years in federal prison on fraud charges and up to 10 years for money laundering when he's sentenced on December 5th. He must also pay $1.3 million in restitution to the customers he duped, though many victims are likely wondering if they'll ever see that money either. AI Masterclass for Students. China seeks to 'strengthen cooperation' with US at next week's trade talks

BEIJING: China said on Wednesday it will seek to "strengthen cooperation" with the United States at next week's trade talks in Stockholm. Washington and Beijing slapped escalating, tit-for-tat levies on each other's exports earlier this year -- reaching triple-digit levels -- stalling trade between the world's two biggest economies as tensions surged. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday he would meet his Chinese counterparts in Stockholm next week for tariff talks. The third round of high-level negotiations would see a likely postponement of a mid-August deadline for levies to snap back to steeper levels, Bessent told Fox Business. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Wednesday that Beijing hoped the two sides could work together "on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit." "We will enhance consensus, reduce misunderstandings, strengthen cooperation and promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of Sino-US relations," he said. China's vice premier will attend the talks in the Swedish capital. "He Lifeng will go to Sweden from July 27 to 30" for the negotiations, a commerce ministry spokesperson said in a Wednesday statement. After top officials met in Geneva in May, both sides agreed to temporarily lower their tariff levels in a de-escalation set to expire next month. Officials from the two countries also met in London in June.
