River Valley Co-op Strawberry Ice Cream Social to aid Center for New Americans
This outdoor celebration will honor community leaders and welcome the arrival of strawberry season with music, food, family fun, and a deep sense of gratitude for local changemakers.
State Rep. Homar Gomez will join River Valley Co-op directors in presenting the Austin Miller awards, which recognize local individuals, nonprofit groups and businesses that exemplify cooperative values and uplift the community.
All proceeds from this year's Ice Cream Social will benefit the Center for New Americans in Northampton, a nonprofit group providing immigrants and refugees with education and support to help them thrive in their new communities.
This year's award recipients include:
Local nonprofit: Center for New Americans
Local farm or food producer: Thomas Farm, Goat and dairy cheese makers
Local business: Real Pickles
Local individual: Linda Frogameni, of the Northampton Early Childhood Center
The event will feature live music from The Gaslight Tinkers, known for their Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and funk grooves.
A fresh summer menu will be available for purchase with favorites, like burgers, corn on the cob and locally sourced strawberry sundaes. Sundaes are specially priced at just $3 for the event. All proceeds go to CNA.
Family-friendly activities and games on the patio. This event is free to enter and open to all.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Drowned in Area Known for Rip Currents
The beach in Costa Rica where Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned was known for its strong surf and dangerous rip currents, and was not protected by lifeguards when he died on Sunday. A second man who was rescued from the sea that day was in critical condition, the authorities said. Warner, who shot to fame as a teenager when he played Theo Huxtable on 'The Cosby Show' from 1984 to 1992, was swimming at a beach on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, south of Limón, when he was 'apparently swept away by a current' around 2 p.m. on Sunday, the nation's Judicial Investigation Department said in a statement. Three ambulances, a jet ski and nine rescuers were dispatched to the area, Playa Grande, a popular tourist destination, a spokesman for the Costa Rican Red Cross said in a statement. Warner, 54, was pulled from the sea and given CPR for more than 20 minutes, but attempts to resuscitate him failed, officials said. A second man, 35, was rescued and taken to a local clinic in critical condition, the Red Cross said. He was not identified, and no other details were given. The area, whose waves make it a favorite among surfers, is known for dangerously strong rip currents. Mike Geist, the vice president of Caribbean Guard, a group of about 35 volunteer lifeguards who patrol three beaches in the area, said a lack of resources had left the beach where Warner died unguarded on Sunday. The group had temporarily moved its team to another beach that draws more people and had recently been the site of several rescues and a fatality. 'We had to make this judgment call, and it turned out to be bad,' Geist said, lamenting that his organization did not have the funds to staff the beach every day. 'It sickens my stomach that we weren't there, because I can't tell you how many days I personally spent there on that post, in that guard stand, and because of stupid money, you know, and we just did not have enough people to do it.' Bill Cosby reacts to Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death
Bill Cosby said that when he learned of the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played his son on "The Cosby Show," he spoke with Phylicia Rashad, who played the mother. "We were embracing each other over the phone about a dearly beloved friend ... Malcolm was always embracing relationships with everybody he worked with," Cosby told "CBS Weekend News" anchor Jericka Duncan in an interview. Warner's death shocked the entertainment world Monday when it became known that the performer drowned in Costa Rica the day before during a family vacation. The 54-year-old was apparently pulled out to sea by a current off the Central American nation's Caribbean coast and he couldn't be revived onshore, officials said. A spokesperson for Cosby said in a statement that the 88-year-old former actor was devastated when he found out Warner had died. Cosby compared learning the news to when he was told that his son Ennis was killed in 1997, according to spokesperson Andrew Wyatt. "It felt the same way," Wyatt said. Cosby told Duncan he last spoke with Warner about three months ago about his music career. In 2015, Warner, with the Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway, won the Grammy for best traditional R&B performance with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America." Warner was also nominated for best spoken word poetry album at the 2023 Grammys. "He was very proud of what he had done," Cosby said. America watched Warner grow up as he played Theo Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" for the entirety of the show's run from 1984 to 1992, earning Warner an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series in 1986. In the interview with Duncan, Cosby praised Warner's dedication to the profession. "He was never afraid to go to his room and study and make sure he followed whatever he had learned in the acting school he went to," Cosby said. In 2015, as Cosby faced multiple allegations of sexual assault, Warner told The Associated Press that "The Cosby Show" lost its place as a counter to the portrayal of negative stereotypes of people of color in movies and TV. "And the fact that we no longer have that, that's the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale," Warner told the AP. Cosby was convicted in a Pennsylvania court in 2018, but the conviction was overturned in 2021. In 2023, Warner spoke highly of his experience on "The Cosby Show" in an interview with CBS News Pittsburgh. "That show had such an impact on the culture here in America but also a global impact on how, you know, Black people saw ourselves globally and how the rest of the world saw us," he said. "So I'm proud to have been part of that legacy, and it's been a great ride ever since."
