NRES to table National Climate Change bill in August
He said the bill has been completed and is being reviewed by the Attorney-General's Chambers.
'The review process is being conducted after the NRES completed engagement sessions with state governments, as the implementation of the proposed law involves their jurisdictions.
'We plan to table it in Parliament during the next session in August. It was previously postponed to June, but we needed time to fine-tune the bill,' he told reporters after today's launch of the Environmental Sustainability Road Tour 2.0 at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here.
In January, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stated that the ministry was finalising the bill with input from various stakeholders to ensure its comprehensiveness and relevance.
Regarding the use of renewable energy (RE) in the country, Ching Thoo stated that Malaysia is on a positive trajectory towards achieving its 70 per cent RE capacity target, in line with the goals outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
'If we look at the current breakdown, it is largely dominated by solar panels, which I believe account for nearly 95 per cent. According to PETRA (Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation) data, we have reached approximately 40 per cent,' he added.

The Prime Minister said permanent appointments must be made in accordance with the Federal Constitution. 'There is no need to rush. Some people are saying that the government does not have (credible) candidates to appoint, so it has to rely on acting ministers. That's not true. 'They (Amir Hamzah and Johari) are simply covering these roles until new appointments are made. 'It's unfortunate when opposition MPs can't understand that,' he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Ar-Rahim here yesterday, Bernama reported. Ministers Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (pic) and Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan have been appointed to perform the duties and functions of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry and Economy Ministry, respectively, This follows the resignations of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli after both of them failed to retain their party positions in the PKR elections in May. Amir Hamzah has been acting Economy Minister since June 27 while Johari took over the duties and functions of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister from yesterday. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who also serves as the Cabinet secretary, said Johari's appointment was conveyed during the Cabinet meeting on July 9. Anwar urged all parties to give Amir Hamzah and Johari space to carry out their responsibilities effectively. On a separate matter, the Prime Minister reiterated that he has never interfered in the affairs of the judiciary, including the appointment of judges or any court decisions. 'The process of judicial appointments must be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and established jurisdiction. 'For more than two and a half years (as Prime Minister), I have never interfered. What is important is that we adhere to the process,' he said. Commenting on the Malaysian Bar's intention to organise a peaceful assembly and march on July 14, Anwar said it was the decision of the organisers. Anwar also said the issue of judicial independence has already been explained by the Attorney General (Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar), Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. 'If there were proposals to change the mechanism for judicial appointments, it would need to be done through amendments to the Constitution. 'For this area (judicial appointments), we follow the process that has been practised,' he said. Responding to Umno's statement urging for the implementation of the house arrest order for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Anwar said the government respects the views of all parties regarding the royal addendum issue. 'However, the document is subject to judicial process and it is still under court proceedings. 'This additional document is a court matter now, no issue. Let the court handle it. 'Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We respect that but (we) must follow due process,' he added. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the request followed confirmation of the additional document's existence by the Attorney General. Last Wednesday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) did not dispute the existence of the additional document which would allow Najib to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest. However, the AGC contested the procedure for submitting the document as new evidence in Najib's judicial review application at the High Court.

Pritam Singh's appeal against conviction for lying to Parliament set for Nov 4
Pritam Singh was fined S$14,000 on Feb 17 after being found guilty of two charges of wilfully lying to Singapore Parliament's Committee of Privileges. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : The appeal hearing for Singapore's Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh, who was convicted earlier this year of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee, has been scheduled for Nov 4. Pritam's lawyer, Andre Jumabhoy, confirmed the date, The Straits Times reported. On Feb 17, the Aljunied GRC MP was fined S$14,000 after being found guilty of two charges of wilfully lying to the Committee of Privileges, making him Singapore's first sitting opposition MP in nearly four decades to be convicted of a criminal offence. The opposition leader received the maximum fine of S$7,000 for each charge and said at the time that he would appeal both the conviction and sentence. In his ruling, deputy principal district judge Luke Tan found that Pritam had lied about how he handled the false claims made by former WP MP Raeesah Khan in Parliament on Aug 3, 2021. Raeesah falsely told the House she had accompanied a sexual assault victim to a police station. She repeated the claim on Oct 4 that year before eventually admitting it was untrue. The 13-day trial began on Oct 14, 2024, with Pritam, Raeesah and other former WP officials taking the stand. While the defence portrayed Raeesah as a habitual liar, prosecutors led by then deputy attorney-general Ang Cheng Hock argued that Pritam had attempted to cover up his own role in the matter. Despite the conviction, Pritam retained his seat in Parliament after the recent general election, in which WP held on to Aljunied GRC with 59.68% of the vote, defeating PAP, which received 40.32%. Following the election, prime minister Lawrence Wong said Pritam would remain as leader of the opposition and continue to receive staff and resources to carry out his responsibilities.

No talent gap behind interim Cabinet picks, says PM
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Datuk Seri Johari Ghani's temporary appointment to lead the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry is not due to a shortage of qualified candidates in the government. He said Johari, along with Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan — who is currently overseeing the Economy Ministry — are both holding interim roles pending permanent appointments. 'There's been some confusion, with people questioning if it's because there's no one else available, so these roles had to be filled temporarily. That's not true. 'They are just carrying out the responsibilities for now, until a full Cabinet appointment is decided,' ,' Anwar told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Ar Rahim. Anwar said such interim arrangements are not unprecedented, pointing out that the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) now known as the Economy Ministry was previously managed under the Prime Minister's Department. He said the EPU was restructured following the change of government after the 15th General Election on Dec 23, 2022. 'Now, Amir Hamzah is handling some of the responsibilities, and Johari Ghani is overseeing certain functions as well. There's no need to rush the process,' he said. Anwar added that if opposition MPs failed to understand these temporary arrangements, 'then that's unfortunate, because they are clearly serving in an acting capacity.' Earlier today, Cabinet Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said in a statement that Anwar had informed the Cabinet during its meeting on Wednesday (July 9) that he had agreed for Johari to take on the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, effective immediately.
