Alexander Zverev Enters Toronto Masters Semifinals, Will Face...
Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semifinal by defeating Alexei Popyrin 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP Toronto Masters.
Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semifinal on Monday by ending Alexei Popyrin's Canadian title defence with a 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-3 victory at the ATP Toronto Masters. The final game, with Zverev serving at 5-3, was interrupted by shouts from an unruly fan who was subsequently removed by security.
The distraction broke a streak of 14 consecutive points on serve, causing Zverev to double-fault when he resumed serving. He concluded the evening with a sharp volley winner at the net on his first match point.
Zverev secured his 40th win of the year in just over two and a half hours. The world number three had won the tournament in 2017 but had not progressed past the quarterfinals in Canada since.
'After losing the first set, I had to remind myself that we were both playing well," said the holder of seven Masters trophies. 'I made one or two mistakes at the end of the first set, but it was a high-level match. I felt that if I kept playing well, I would get my chances — and I did. I can't complain about the second and third sets."
Zverev will compete in the unusually scheduled Thursday final against three-time semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, who defeated young American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).
'It was a very close, competitive match," Khachanov said. 'I had to come back from some tough situations. How you handle that mentally is important. I was glad to close it out in the second set. I had to try and not give him the opportunity to step in and attack; that's what I did today."
Zverev has won five of the seven matches he has played against Khachanov.
Popyrin and Zverev battled throughout the evenly matched 71-minute opening set, leading to a tiebreaker.
Zverev failed to convert on two winning opportunities, but Popyrin succeeded on his second chance with a net cord winner that left his opponent stranded at the baseline. The German started to turn the tide in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead before the Australian levelled at 4-all.
Zverev pulled ahead to tie the match at one set apiece, breaking for 6-4 as Popyrin sent a volley wide. The top seed began the final set with a 3-0 lead, advancing to the tournament's final four at the pre-US Open event.
Popyrin remains winless against Zverev, having lost all four of their encounters.

Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Not A Certainty For 2027 WC: 'Both Will Be Pushing 40...'
Last Updated: It's not a given that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be part of India's 2027 ODI World Cup plans with BCCI set to have honest discussions with the two veterans. While the in-transition Indian Test team continues to be praised for their performance in the recently concluded tour of England, the BCCI has reportedly started planning for the next ODI World Cup cycle. And it could well decide the future of two of India's finest cricketers – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit and Kohli have retired from Tests and T20Is, and the perception is that the duo will continue playing ODIs with the 2027 world cup being the obvious goal. However, their age, motivation and lack of match practice will be crucial in deciding whether the team management wants them to continue playing the one-day format. Rohit is 38 and Kohli 36. The next time the two are expected to be back in action will be in Australia for a three-match ODI series in October this year followed by a home series against South Africa in November-December. Next year, they will have another six ODIs between January and July. Will this be good enough to keep them motivated and in prime shape for the world cup? 'Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time," PTI quoted a source as saying. Kohli, Rohit Won't Be Forced Out However, there are no plans to force the duo out from one-day cricket. They retired from T20Is on a high as India clinched the world cup last year. From Tests though, they quietly bid their goodbyes, via social media. 'Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don't think nobody's going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that," the source said. Lack of Match Time The last time Rohit and Kohli played an ODI was the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy in March. Since then, they have played in IPL. And since they have now only play one format, it means there will be less match-time for either. Would this mean that Rohit and Kohli could make appearances in domestic cricket? The BCCI guidelines do say that a contracted player should be available to play for his domestic team if not playing international cricket. Interestingly, the domestic white ball competitions start only in November with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s followed by the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December. Fritz, Shelton set up all-American Toronto semi-final
US second seed Taylor Fritz overcame a late niggle while serving for the match on Tuesday to beat Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6 and reach the ATP Toronto Masters semi-finals. Fritz, Shelton set up all-American Toronto semi-final The American claimed his place in a fifth semi-final of the season after losing serve while trying to close out what had been looking like a quick win, finally coming through into the last four at this level for the first time after 83 minutes. The Californian will play for a spot in the Thursday final when he takes on fourth seed Ben Shelton, who won a Masters quarter-final on his fourth attempt, defeating Australian Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4. Shelton laid down 11 aces in his 91-minute victory and dominated on rallies longer than nine shots. The result ended a seven-match win streak for last week's Washington champion de Minaur. "I'm really happy with that performance. It showed mental toughness from start to finish," Shelton said. "This win gives me a lot of confidence, I'm excited about the semi-final. "People often just see me as a server, not much of a grinder, but when I go into lockdown mode and put a lot of balls onto the court, it surprises guys sometimes. "Winning longer rallies is all part of my evolution." Shelton set up three match points with his final ace and needed only one chance to emerge the winner. Fritz admitted he was struck by brain freeze as he served for victory leading a set and 5-4. After saving three break points he put a return into the net for 5-all as Rublev held on. "That game was so shaky for me, we had both been holding serve easily, everything felt calm and chill," he said. "It came out of nowhere, the pressure of that game. It was tight and my brain just turned off. "The only thing to do is to come back and try to win the set. That's what is able to make it all feel not as bad." Fritz did just that, closing out the win 15 minutes later in the second-set tiebreaker with a serve winner. Fritz struck a personal-best 20 aces among his 29 winners. He now stands 6-4 over Rublev. The American has now won 19 of his last 22 matches including reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals. str/js This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
