Viral 'white sock challenge' hits South Africa's streets

The global white sock challenge trend, which has captured the curiosity of millions on TikTok, has officially landed in South Africa – and the results have sparked conversation about the cleanliness of Mzansi's cities. The challenge, made viral by international content creator Jimbo Hall, involves wearing a brand-new pair of white socks while walking through various cities – and then showing how dirty they become by the end of the day. It's a simple but striking way to visually measure just how clean (or dirty) public streets really are. Hall's sock tests from the ultra-clean streets of Tokyo, the glitzy walkways of Dubai, and London's underground have racked up hundreds of millions of views, revealing stark differences in urban hygiene. @jimbo.h I was actually surprised by this 😂 #london #challenge ♬ Blue Danube Waltz – London Symphony Orchestra Back home, Tim Morrel, a Stellenbosch-based content creator known for his social experiments and pranks , decided to bring the trend to South Africa – with a twist. You might remember Morrel as the guy who: Started a full-blown concert during a university lecture during a university lecture Filmed what a car guard would do if someone tried to steal his vehicle Now, he's turning his lens toward public hygiene. In his video, Morrel walked through central Stellenbosch and the taxi rank area in his white socks, camera in hand. While filming, he was nearly mugged, showing that doing such challenges in South Africa also comes with safety risks not often faced in other global cities. But beyond the drama, the footage showed just how grimy the socks became – caked with dirt, dust, and black smudges after just a few hours. Morrel didn't hold back in his commentary: 'We're either not using the cleaning budget properly, or there's just no accountability. It shouldn't be this bad.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by morrellpov🧃 (@timmorrel) While some may view the white sock challenge as just another quirky trend, its underlying message hits home – clean streets are a basic sign of public health, infrastructure efficiency, and civic pride. In Morrel's words: 'It's more than a sock test. It shows us how far we have to go to make our spaces livable and safe.' The reaction online has been split. Many South Africans praised Morrel for raising awareness in a light-hearted yet powerful way. Others were quick to point out the need for better waste management, regular street cleaning, and civic education about littering. One user commented: 'Maybe if we had more people showing this side of things, we'd start taking responsibility for our environments.' Next Stay Close ✕ The first episodes showcased renowned local singer Jarrad Ricketts viewing a sensational Camps Bay villa for his family vacation. This multi-story property in one of the Mother City's most exclusive suburbs featured uninterrupted views from all angles of the house, leaving the entertainer insisting that his wife will come around to the whopping R50 000 per night price tag. Meanwhile, fans of the show have also been able to enjoy glimpses of an impeccably designed Bishop's Court modern farmhouse as well as a mindblowing penthouse, which seeks to be the best of its kind on the African continent and was built to resemble a yacht, in the new season. Its latest offering has also seen the introduction of new agents, which include Wendy Khumalo, Neteske Gavin, Romy-Leé Ferreira and Dael Dyer. They join familiar favourites such as Byron Louw, Kim Tresfon and Jonathan Tannous return to the show, promising a diverse mix of personalities and strategies that could either charm or clash throughout the season. Meanwhile, one of the most notable comments shared by many of the agents on the series was just how high the demand for property is in the city. Property director Warrick Wiegand, who makes an appearance on the show, believes that: 'The reason why the Cape Town property market is so alluring is because everybody has started to realise just what a world-class city on any scale Cape Town is. 'The demand has got to a point where it far surpasses the supply. From an international standpoint, Cape Town is exceptionally underpriced and undervalued and still has much more room for growth.' Meanwhile, Louw, a popular figure who has appeared on previous seasons, shared similar sentiments. 'I think it is a cosmopolitan mix of things that keeps Cape Town as a top contender, such as the favourable exchange rate, steady foreign investment and local attractions matching world-class standards.' As more episodes of the new season of 'Listing Cape Town' drop weekly, Louw is thrilled for viewers to witness what the series still has in store for them. 'Besides all the gorgeous views and the luxury living, I am personally very excited for viewers to see a younger set of buyers breaking into the property market and forging their unique path.' The top deck of the yacht-resembled looking penthouse. Image: Instagram Louw elaborated that some of the other season highlights will be scouting for a client in Brazil and flying over to Rio De Janeiro to seal the deal. Wiegand added: 'We featured the world-famous, one and only Stefan Antoni in our iconic Camps Bay listing that he designed.' He said that the acclaimed architect also details his insightful thoughts on the home from an architectural point of view. The property director also promised viewers that the latest installment will include: 'New agents, bigger negotiations, better properties and an all-round must add to your weekly calendar overall.' Meanwhile, Louw believes that the high-end real estate agents on the show are what makes it so popular. 'In my opinion, the show remains a hit because of the diverse set of agents, all at the top of their game, who bring their own unique approach to deal-making.' On what he thinks will surprise viewers the most about the new season, Louw said: 'We were able to top property prices and still have them selling so swiftly. Just when you think Cape Town has plateaued, the market will surprise you.' ∎ Watch new episodes of 'Listing Cape Town' season 3 on Wednesday at 8pm on BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174).

Iceland volcano erupts for ninth time since 2023

A volcano erupted on Wednesday in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula in the southwest, weather authorities said, the ninth eruption to hit the region since the end of 2023. Live video feeds showed lava spewing out of a fissure in the ground, with the Icelandic Met Office saying that it began just before 4:00 am. The weather agency later in the day reported that the main fissure was estimated to be 2.4 kilometres long, and that a second smaller fissure, about 500 metres long, had opened up nearby. Due to high levels of gas pollution in the air, residents were advised to stay indoors. Broadcaster RUV reported that the nearby fishing village Grindavik had been evacuated, as had the Blue Lagoon, Iceland's famed tourist spot. Police Commissioner Margret Kristin Palsdottir, told the broadcaster that the evacuation of the some 100 people staying in the village had gone smoothly. Palsdottir also said they had prevented some tourists from entering the area. "Of course, we understand that this is a fascinating event, especially for tourists who are not as accustomed to it as we are," Palsdottir said. Geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson told RUV that the eruption didn't seem as big as earlier ones and was in a good location as it wasn't near any infrastructure. The previous eruption to hit the area was in April, and a risk assessment published on Tuesday didn't expect another eruption until this autumn. When the first volcanic eruption first hit the area in late 2023, most of Grindavik's 4,000 residents were evacuated. Since then, almost all of the houses have been sold to the state, and most of the residents have left. Volcanoes on the Reykjanes peninsula had not erupted for eight centuries when in March 2021 a period of heightened seismic activity began. Public Defense Department of the State Police/AFP | Handout Volcanologists have warned in recent years that volcanic activity in the region had entered a new era. RUV said the latest eruption was not expected to impact international flights. A volcanic eruption in another part of Iceland in 2010 caused worldwide travel chaos as the ash spewed into the atmosphere sparked airspace closures in Europe. Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, more than any other European country. It is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a fault in the ocean floor that separates the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and causes earthquakes and eruptions.
