Digital Innovation Part Of ASEAN 2045
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- ASEAN is reinforcing its commitment to a seamlessly connected region through the ASEAN Connectivity Strategic Plan, which now places digital innovation and technology adoption at the heart of its long-term goals.
According to the Plan, the strategic goal for digital innovation is to achieve a community with continuous digital innovation and enhanced cybersecurity, advancing payments and financial markets' connectivity and efficient cross-border flow of information.
'ASEAN's digital economy is growing rapidly, and to unlock the region's digital economic potential and promote digital inclusion, adopting and integrating frontier technologies – such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data – is essential.
'While technologies and solutions offer significant benefits, their implementation poses challenges, including widening digital divide and increasing online safety and cybersecurity concerns, which will need to be addressed through advancing digital innovation, cross-border data flows, and promoting safe, inclusive access to and adoption of digital technologies and services,' it stated.
Digital innovation is one of six strategic areas of the ASEAN Connectivity Strategic Plan, which envisages connecting ASEAN by enhancing the physical, institutional, and people-to-people linkages across the region.
The other five strategic areas are sustainable infrastructure, smart and sustainable urban development, seamless logistics and supply chain, regulatory excellence and cooperation, and people-to-people connectivity, which are also crafted to support the realisation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
In pursuing these goals, several strategic measures have been identified, including promoting digital data governance to support inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development across ASEAN; promoting the development of and improving the use and accessibility of open data; and supporting the adoption of existing and emerging technologies by all people and businesses, with the focus on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs), women, youth, and persons with disabilities to enhance competitiveness and productivity.
Other strategies include advancing seamless regional payments connectivity; enhancing collaborative research and development of digital technology; strengthening cooperation on cybersecurity measures to protect digital ecosystems, enhance online safety, combat online scams, and enhance trust in digital services, including use of online security technologies and applications.
Also enhancing information inclusiveness and accessibility and strengthening collaboration in digital media and information literacy to foster digital literacy among ASEAN citizens and address fake news, disinformation, and misinformation; and strengthening and nurturing digital talent mobility in ASEAN.

MICSEA president YK Lai said the clarification is both timely and essential, particularly for employers seeking to comply with legal requirements without unnecessary confusion. 'This clarification is crucial and welcomed, as it ensures that companies can continue to offer internships without administrative hurdles or added cost implications,' he said in a statement. 'With this, many employers can now confidently enhance their internship programmes without fear of non-compliance. It also ensures that internship opportunities will not be disrupted or deterred, supporting the government's initiative to prepare students to be industry-ready upon graduation.' He added that many companies view internship programmes as an important talent pipeline, and the assurance provided will allow them to contribute meaningfully to graduate employability and real-world exposure. In contrast, Lai said apprenticeship agreements do require stamping as they are considered formal employment relationships governed under the Employment Act 1955. He added that employment contracts that have been exempted may obtain a stamp duty exemption certificate. 'This implies that submission is optional, offering flexibility to employers with exempted pre-2025 contracts.' He further noted that employment contracts sealed from 2025 onward must be submitted to LHDN for stamping in accordance with subsection 4(1) of the Stamp Act 1949. To further promote voluntary compliance and ease the process, Lai proposed that LHDN allow for a one-time bulk submission of all employment contracts signed before Jan 1, 2025 to obtain the stamp duty exemption certificate. 'This initiative would encourage more employers to come forward and regularise their documents in an efficient, streamlined manner,' he said. He also called on all employers to review the full FAQs for better understanding and continue consulting with relevant experts where needed. Media practitioners gather at KLCC for 58th AMM meetings
KUALA LUMPUR: Local and international media practitioners began gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which run from Tuesday until July 11. A check by Bernama found that most members of the media arrived as early as 8 am to collect their accreditation passes and cover the media walkabout on facilities and logistics conducted by representatives from the Foreign Ministry. The media was also taken on a tour of the International Media Centre (IMC), located in Hall 5 of KLCC, which offers a comfortable workspace, high-speed internet access via LAN and Wi-Fi, and hotel-standard catering. Mohammad Fikri Ali, a representative from RT, described the preparations at the IMC by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), in its role as IMC coordinator, as well-organised and systematic. 'Despite registering at the last minute, Bernama made the registration, vetting and security process very easy. Communications and dealings with ministry officials also went smoothly. The walkabout just now was very clear, especially for first-time participants,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Lok Sai Mun from Sin Chew Daily said the facilities at the IMC met the needs of media practitioners to perform their duties effectively. 'I feel the preparations and facilities this time are good, with a few new additions. I hope this round of meetings will run more smoothly,' she said. Yesterday, IMC coordinator Zaria Mohd Nasri said nearly 1,000 media personnel from both local and international organisations are expected to converge in the federal capital to cover the meetings. Zaria, who is also head of the Media Secretariat, said Bernama, as the official media and IMC coordinator for the meetings, is committed to ensuring the smooth setup and operations of the media and secretariat workspaces as planned. She added that the secretariat has provided online platforms for media access to event photos and ASEAN news at and A total of 24 meetings at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' level will be held, including those with ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partners and the ASEAN Secretariat. Malaysia will also host the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV), which will be co-chaired by Japan and focus on reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
