'Rego rort': cars without brakes or airbags issued 'fraudulent pink slips'

The Advertiser6 days ago
Fraudulent pink slips have allegedly been issued to cars with major safety defects in a false documentation scheme at a dealership.
Police have charged three men, aged 39, 40 and 42, who worked at the Castle Hill car dealership in Sydney's northwest over their involvement in the scheme.
Police believe that 22 fraudulent safety inspection reports were issued by the men between January and May 2025.
Two heavily modified cars sparked the investigation after police discovered a Nissan 200SX sedan and a Nissan 180SX sedan had been issued pink slips despite dangerous defects.
The cars allegedly had no airbags, anti-locking brakes had been removed, and their suspension did not meet minimum safety standards.
Police said the cars also had "dangerous frontal protrusions".
"Inquiries revealed the two cars were allegedly granted 'pink slips' following safety inspections conducted by a Castle Hill dealership in April 2025," Victoria Police said.
The three dealership employees were charged with knowingly producing false or misleading documents and breaching conditions of examiners' authority.
The 40-year-old and and 42-year-old were also charged with issuing a false or misleading inspection report.
The men were expected to appear before Parramatta Local Court on July 30.

Former TV journalist Benjamin McCormack charged with more than 60 child abuse material offences

Former A Current Affair journalist Ben McCormack is back in court after being charged with more than 60 child abuse material offences. Mr McCormack, a former high-profile TV journalist with the Nine Network, had his matter mentioned in the Brisbane Arrests Court on Monday. He is charged with 65 counts of using a carriage service to 'transmit, make available, publish, distribute, advertise or promote' child abuse material, three counts of failing to comply with his reporting obligations and a single count of giving false or misleading information. According to court documents, the carriage service charges relate to allegations Mr McCormack transmitted audio files considered to be child abuse material on diverse dates over April to November last year. The three reporting charges concern allegations he failed to notify child protection authorities about details concerning a social media site, 'digital devices' and a carriage service. His last charge alleges he gave false or misleading information about a 'carriage service start date' to authorities. Mr McCormack's matter was adjourned to September 5 on request by his lawyer. He remains in custody on remand.

Synagogue targeted with graffiti by man in Scream mask

A man wearing a mask from the horror movie Scream sprayed offensive graffiti on a historic synagogue in South Yarra five times since March. CCTV footage shows a lone man wearing a white mask approach the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in South Yarra on an e-scooter before vandalising the synagogue. He then fled on the scooter. Police allege he scrawled graffiti on the synagogue on March 11, June 21, June 22, July 22 and July 30. In the July incidents, he wore a Scream mask, police said, but on other occasions, he wore different face coverings, such as a bandana. 'There is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour,' a Victoria Police spokesperson said. Loading Speaking to The Age after his synagogue was spray-painted with 'Iran is Da Bomb' (during Israel's war on Iran) and 'Free Palestine' in June, Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson said it was 'un-Australian'. 'There's going to be a wide variety of opinions as to the politics in the Middle East and where things stand from one extreme to the other, but to translate that into violent acts and antisemitism and criminal activity here in Australia is un-Australian,' Nathanson said. The synagogue is the oldest Jewish congregation in Melbourne, according to its website, and was formed in 1841.
