Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe was sentenced Friday to 12 years of house arrest for witness tampering and bribery in a historic case that gripped the South American nation and tarnished the conservative strongman's legacy. The sentence, which Uribe said will be appealed, followed a nearly six-month trial in which prosecutors presented evidence that he attempted to influence witnesses who accused the law-and-order leader of having links to a paramilitary group in the 1990s."Politics prevailed over the law in sentencing," Uribe said after Friday's hearing.Uribe, 73, has denied any wrongdoing. He faced up to 12 years in prison after being convicted Monday. His attorney had asked the court to allow Uribe to remain free while he appeals the verdict. Judge Sandra Heredia on Friday said she did not grant the defense's request because it would be "easy" for the former president to leave the country to "evade the imposed sanction."Heredia also banned Uribe from holding public office for eight years and fined him about $776,000.Ahead of Friday's sentencing, Uribe posted on X that he was preparing arguments to support his appeal. He added that one must "think much more about the solution than the problem" during personal crises. The appeals court will have until early October to issue a ruling, which either party could then challenge before Colombia's Supreme Court. The former president governed from 2002 to 2010 with strong support from the United States. He is a polarizing figure in Colombia, where many credit him for saving the country from becoming a failed state, while others associate him with human rights violations and the rise of paramilitary groups in the 1990s.Heredia on Monday said she had seen enough evidence to determine that Uribe conspired with a lawyer to coax three former paramilitary group members, who were in prison, into changing testimony they had provided to Ivan Cepeda, a leftist senator who had launched an investigation into Uribe's alleged ties to a paramilitary group.Uribe in 2012 filed a libel suit against Cepeda in the Supreme Court. But in a twist, the high court in 2018 dismissed the accusations against Cepeda and began investigating Uribe.Martha Penuela Rosales, a supporter of Uribe's party in the capital, Bogota, said she wept and prayed after hearing of the sentence. "It's an unjust sentence. He deserves to be free," she said.Meanwhile, Sergio Andres Parra, who protested against Uribe outside the courthouse, said the 12-year sentence "is enough" and, even if the former president appeals, "history has already condemned him."During Uribe's presidency, Colombia's military attained some of its biggest battlefield victories against Latin America's oldest leftist insurgency, pushing the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia into remote pockets and forcing the group's leadership into peace talks that led to the disarmament of more than 13,000 fighters in 2016.

28 Maharashtra sugar mills face action for non-payment of dues to farmers

The sugar commissionerate recently issued Revenue Recovery Code (RRC) against 28 sugar mills in Maharashtra for failing to clear their dues to cane farmers for the 2024-25 season. These mills now face the possibility of their sugar stocks being seized and auctioned to pay farmers their dues. A report from the sugar commissionerate shows that mills in the state had crushed 854.50 lakh tonnes of cane and were expected to pay Rs 31,587 crore as the Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) to farmers for cane purchased from them. Till July 15, Maharashtra reported 98.70 per cent of clearance of cane dues. A total of 135 mills have cleared 100 per cent of their FRP till date. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court struck down the 2022 government resolution that allowed FRP to be paid in parts. FRP is linked with sugar recovery – which is the ratio between sugar produced and cane crushed – and the 2022 resolution had mandated that payment be done as per the recovery of the current season. This meant the first payment would be as per the base recovery, and once the season is over, the rest would be paid as per the final recovery percentage of the mill. This was a break from the past, where the mills paid the FRP as per the recovery of the last season, and most mills paid FRP in one instalment. Farmer leader Raju Shetti had moved the Bombay High Court against this move, and the high court had struck down the 2022 government resolution. The state government has moved the Supreme Court against this decision. Yogesh Pande, Spokesperson, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said, 'We have already filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in this regard. We will pursue the matter to its logical end.' Ex-Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel moves Supreme Court to challenge ED, CBI powers, seeks anticipatory bail

RAIPUR: AICC General Secretary and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel moved the Supreme Court , challenging the jurisdiction and powers of the CBI and ED, and seeking anticipatory bail in cases being probed by the ED, CBI, and the state Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The case is scheduled for a hearing on Monday. Baghel's plea follows the arrest of his son, Chaitanya Baghel, by the ED in connection with the alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam. 'The move is primarily to challenge the powers of the ED and CBI, with the anticipatory bail petition filed alongside,' a close aide of the former chief minister told TOI. While seeking protection from arrest in the liquor scam and the Mahadev betting app cases, Baghel assured full cooperation with the investigating agencies. In his petition, he stated that he fears being targeted for political reasons, as in the case of his son Chaitanya Baghel, who was arrested by the ED last month. Meanwhile, Chaitanya, currently lodged in Raipur jail, also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court. His counsel, Faizal Rizvi, told TOI that Chaitanya's plea states his name does not appear in the ED's FIR or any witness statements, and that his arrest is politically motivated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Chaitanya's judicial remand is set to end on Monday, and he will be produced in court. The ED is expected to seek an extension. The ED arrested Chaitanya on 18 July under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. His arrest coincided with his 38th birthday and followed what the agency claimed was fresh evidence in the alleged scam. According to Rizvi, while the ED alleged that Chaitanya received an interest-free loan of Rs 5 crore from a jeweller, documents submitted in February 2025 show the loan was repaid with interest. The ED further claimed that proceeds from the liquor scam were invested in Chaitanya's real estate project. Earlier this year, the ED raided Bhupesh Baghel's residence in connection with the liquor scam. A month later, the CBI carried out searches at his home in relation to the Mahadev betting app case. Raids were also conducted at the residences of his former OSDs. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Software engineer moves top court against Rajasthan HC's 'erroneous' order on foreign travel

New Delhi, A software engineer, accused of raping a woman on the pretext of marriage, has moved the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Rajasthan High Court which directed his wife to be present in the country if he wished to travel abroad for a job. Software engineer moves top court against Rajasthan HC's 'erroneous' order on foreign travel The petitioner in his plea said the high court, in a clear violation of the "procedural impropriety" and without hearing or impleading his wife, who is currently employed in the US, and ignoring that she is not a part of the criminal case, directed her to remain in India. The petition, filed through advocate Ashwani Dubey, submitted that the said impugned direction passed by the high court was "erroneous" and violative of the fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution. The matter is listed for hearing on August 8. The counsel argued that the direction suffered from procedural irregularity and legal perversity, having been passed without affording a hearing to the person affected. "The petitioner is the Indian passport holder and Indian citizen and he is not the citizen of any other country and he will be under the control of Consulate General at USA and there are no chances of his absconding as he is willing to go abroad to earn his livelihood on work visa and therefore, there is no question of his absconding. "He will be going for a specific period and he undertakes a specific oath before this Court that he shall make himself available for trial as and when directed, therefore, there is no question of delay in trial and also there is no question of his absconding," the plea said. The engineer was booked for rape at the Christianganj Police Station of Ajmer. According to the petition, the accused and the woman met on an online matrimonial site and had a close acquaintance for a period of approximately four years. It was alleged that the man entered into an intimate relationship with the complainant, promising her that he would marry her. Under apprehension of arrest, the engineer moved an anticipatory bail application, which was allowed. He then moved an application before the trial court to allow him to go abroad to the USA for employment. The trial court dismissed the application, which was assailed before the high court, which allowed him to go abroad but imposed a condition that his wife must remain in India.
