Jeffrey to lodge police report over reports linking him to Sabah graft scandal

New Straits Times10 hours ago
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan will lodge a police report over a media report linking him to the graft scandal involving the issuance of mining prospecting licences in the state.
Apart from Jeffrey, an online portal had also alleged that several other prominent Sabah politicians were involved in the scandal.
"To me, it looks like entrapment. Why is it that we are the last group to be involved in the scandal? Why don't we do it all at once?
"I can see that there is a hidden hand moving around and planning all this behind the scenes.
"First, we will make a police report. After that, we will see the reaction of the accused. Then, I will talk to the lawyers and listen to their advice," said the Keningau member of parliament.
He said when footage of other Sabah assemblymen came out last year implicating some in a corruption scandal, "everyone was called" by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
"We went to the MACC office to explain. After that, we thought that was it.
"(This is) because they never contacted us again, never sent us letters. We thought it had nothing to do with us," he said after the 9th anniversary celebration for Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) at Sabah International Convention Centre here.
Recently, the online portal had alleged the Star president received RM1.78 million in connection with the corruption scandal.
Jeffrey, however, said he has not received any summons to appear before the MACC since the allegations appeared.
As for suggestions that implicated leaders should step down temporarily, Jeffrey acknowledged hearing such views.
"I have heard of that. But the chief minister believes this is just a game.

STAR, PBS leaders challenged to file police report over graft allegations

Henrynus speaking during Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri Ranau Branch annual general meeting at Kg Marakau, Ranau on June 29. RANAU (July 1): Allegations of corruption against leaders from the STAR and PBS parties have rattled Sabah's political scene. These accusations, reported by a local news portal and linked to a mining scandal involving senior figures, necessitate swift and transparent action to protect public trust. Several individuals named in the matter have since issued denials, suggesting that Malayan leaders were behind efforts to discredit Sabahan leaders. Datuk Henrynus Amin, president of Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri, stated that simply blaming Malayan leaders or denying the claims won't be enough to convince voters. 'Given these serious accusations, we strongly challenge the leadership of STAR and PBS to immediately file a police report against the portal that initially reported these allegations,' Henrynus asserted. He emphasized that this isn't just about refuting claims; it's about showing a real dedication to accountability and allowing a thorough, impartial investigation through official channels. He noted that it's common for past issues to surface as elections approach. This makes it even more vital for those implicated to address the accusations directly and clear their names, rather than issuing dismissive statements. Additionally, there's an urgent call to halt all prospecting and mining licenses until these allegations are fully investigated. There's also a strong urging for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a thorough probe into the alleged involvement of 'proxy companies' linked to political leaders applying for mineral prospecting or mining licenses. Henrynus said voters deserve political leaders who are beyond reproach. The time for evasion or making lame excuses is over. 'STAR and PBS leaders must take decisive action to prove their innocence and uphold the principles of good governance. 'Their willingness to face an investigation will be the only true measure of their commitment to transparency and respect for the democratic process,' he added in a statement on Tuesday.

Jeffrey questions Putrajaya over Ambalat deal without consulting Sabah

Jeffrey KOTA KINABALU (July 1): Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan is demanding an explanation from the Federal Government over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement in Indonesia regarding plans for joint development in the disputed Ambalat maritime area near Sabah's borders. 'Ambalat has already been decided as an area within Sabah's territory. Why was this decision made without consulting Sabah? That is not right. It is another way of bypassing Sabah's rights,' said Jeffrey. Expressing his disappointment, he said Sabah must be consulted on matters involving its territorial rights. 'We need an explanation, and I will submit a question in Parliament regarding Ambalat, specifically to seek clarification from the Prime Minister. We will wait for his response,' he said. On June 27, national news agency Bernama reported that Anwar and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, including the potential for joint development in the maritime border area between the two countries. Anwar was quoted as saying that both sides should explore economic cooperation in the maritime zone, including the Ambalat area, for the benefit of their respective populations. 'If there still appears to be a deadlock in negotiations in terms of principles, regulations and laws, then there should be no obstacle for us to accelerate economic cooperation, including what Prabowo mentioned earlier regarding a joint development authority. 'Even in the Ambalat area, if we wait for full resolution, it might take another two decades. So let us take advantage of this moment to achieve results that benefit both countries and defend the interests of our people in a region quite far from the main border,' said Anwar. The Ambalat region, located off the east coast of Sabah and rich in natural resources, has long been a subject of overlapping claims by Malaysia and Indonesia.

KUALA LUMPUR: The mention of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) forfeiture application for Ilham Tower, owned by the family of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, has been fixed for Aug 6 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. In a statement, the MACC said the application was filed on May 25 under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act. The statement further noted that the MACC will engage with enforcement authorities in the United States to obtain legal assistance in initiating proceedings against assets linked to Daim, his wife, Toh Puan Nai'mah Abdul Khalid, and their proxies within that jurisdiction. On June 25, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the Commission had filed a forfeiture application in respect of the 60-storey building, which forms part of the latest series of assets identified for forfeiture proceedings involving the former finance minister, Nai'mah, and several of their proxies in Malaysia.
