Malaysia urges tougher action on fake haj, umrah packages

The Sun6 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Stricter and more severe punishments must be imposed on unscrupulous operators who deceive the public by offering bogus haj and umrah packages, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
He said a special task force was formed last month to address the issue, Bernama reported.
'I think right now the most important issue is enforcement. Advice and guidelines have already been provided many times, including during Friday sermons,' he said at the 2025 Ma'al Hijrah celebration yesterday.
'The real issue now is how we can enforce the law and prosecute those who deceive pilgrims. I believe once there are prosecutions and heavy penalties, it would serve as the best deterrent.'
He said Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), the statutory body mandated to manage the haj pilgrimage, does not have the authority to charge or dish out punishment to offenders.
'TH can only lodge a report with the police who then refer the case to the prosecution department. TH can revoke their licences. That part is easy. For umrah, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry can revoke the licences (of the operators) too, so that's not a problem.'
He added that Saudi Arabia has also intensified its enforcement efforts to prevent illegal pilgrims from performing the haj.
'I think the key now is enforcement. I spoke with Saudi Arabia Haj and Umrah Minister Dr Tawfig Fawzan Muhammed Al-Rabiah yesterday morning. He said this year many were successfully prevented from entering the holy land to perform the haj without a valid visa.'

Peace and social harmony vital for Maqasid Syariah, says Mohd Na'im

KUANTAN: Peace and social harmony are fundamental to fulfilling the objectives of Maqasid Syariah and ensuring national stability, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. Speaking at the East Zone Jelajah MADANI Ulama and Umara Programme (JMUU), held alongside the MADANI Al-Falah Carnival at Masjid Jamek Beserah, Mohd Na'im emphasised the role of murabbi ummah (community guides) in upholding the five core principles of Maqasid Syariah: the preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. 'We do not want society to continue being haunted by the agendas of irresponsible parties who spread slander, incite discord and, worse still, go to the extent of accusing fellow Muslims of disbelief,' he said. He urged the community to replace hatred with compassion and mercy, fostering a nation rooted in Islamic values and noble civilisation. Mohd Na'im also called on religious leaders to collaborate with national figures in nurturing a society that respects and cares for all citizens. During the event, nine individuals from Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu were honoured with the Tokoh Imam Mithali, Tokoh Guru Takmir Mithali, and Tokoh Guru KAFA Mithali awards, each receiving RM1,000 and a certificate of appreciation.

KPKT Warns Public Against Illegal Moneylenders

PUTRAJAYA, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has urged the public, particularly those facing financial difficulties, not to fall prey to illegal money-lending schemes. Minister Nga Kor Ming instead advised the public to obtain loans only through licensed moneylenders registered under the Moneylenders Act 1951 (Act 400). He said that under the Act, the annual interest rate must not exceed 18 per cent for unsecured loans and 12 per cent for secured loans. 'Moneylenders are not allowed to impose total interest charges that exceed the principal amount,' he said in a statement here today. The statement was issued following a fire involving three terrace houses in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama, which is believed to be linked to the activities of illegal moneylenders. Nga said Section 29(B) of Act 400 prohibits licensed moneylenders or their representatives from going to borrowers' homes or workplaces to collect repayments or to intimidate them. 'In the event of a violation of this provision, the public is urged to immediately lodge a report with KPKT or the police so that appropriate action can be taken against those involved,' he said. Nga also advised the public to check the status of moneylenders via the i-Kredikom application or by contacting KPKT to ensure they were licensed and registered. He said the ministry took a serious view of illegal moneylending activities by Ah Long or loan sharks, which preyed on low-income and desperate groups, affecting the safety and well-being of the people.
