Nagpur woman who crossed Line of Control from Kargil booked for espionage
Sunita Jamgade (43), who was reported missing on May 14, had crossed the Line of Control from the Hundermaan village in Ladakh last month. She had left her teenage son behind at a hotel.
The woman had crossed the Line of Control amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which left 26 persons dead.
Jamgade had been untraceable for nine days, till the Pakistani Rangers handed her over to Indian authorities on May 23. She was taken back to Nagpur on May 28 and presented before a special court, which sent her to police custody till June 2.
The provisions invoked against her include those related to violating the Official Secrets Act, The Times of India reported.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone V Niketan Kadam claimed that the woman crossed the Line of Control as she wanted to meet a man named Zulfikar, whom she had been in contact with on social media, The Indian Express reported.
'During the investigation, we found several chats on her phone,' the official told the newspaper. 'While there were conversations with multiple individuals, Zulfikar stood out.'
Nevertheless, Kadam said that no evidence had yet emerged that Jamgade had shared sensitive information with anyone.
However, the deputy commissioner of police said that her phone was found in a formatted state, and that a suspicious app had been installed on it, The Times of India reported. Forensic teams are attempting to extract any deleted data from the phone.

Agartala: Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers were shot dead by the BSF at the international border in South Tripura, officials said on Saturday. They further said another Bangladeshi individual had been injured in the firing, while two Indian smugglers were arrested. "BSF personnel were keeping a vigil along the border area, when they spotted a major smuggling attempt. As they tried to intercept, the smugglers got violent. In self-defence, the security personnel opened fire," a senior BSF officer said. "Three smugglers received gunshot wounds and fell to the ground. Jharkhand liquor scam: After Pune director Amit Salunkhe's arrest, Sumeet Facilities denies allegations
TWO DAYS after the arrest of director Amit Salunkhe in the Jharkhand liquor scam, his firm Sumeet Facilities on Saturday denied the allegations levelled against him. 'We categorically reject and dismiss, in the strongest possible terms, the unfounded accusations made in public domain, concerning the alleged involvement of our Director, Amit Salunkhe, in a purported alcohol-related case. These baseless insinuations are nothing more than an attempt to tarnish the reputation of Sumeet Facilities Limited and its leadership,' Sumeet Facilities Limited said in a press release. The Jharkhand police have made 11 arrests in the case involving embezzlement of Rs 450 crore. Salunkhe was called for questioning by the officials of ACB. After questioning, he was taken into custody. 'Neither our company, our director, nor his family members have any links—direct or indirect—with any political party or political figure. Any insinuation to the contrary is wholly inaccurate and deserves to be ignored,' a spokesperson for the firm said. Regarding the Ambulance Project '108', a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was rightly dismissed by the Hon'ble Bombay High Court on April 8, 2025. The court confirmed that the entire tender process conducted by the government of Maharashtra was fair, transparent, and legally sound. All allegations of cost escalation were found to be meritless and unsubstantiated,' the Sumeet Facilities said. 'As for the allegations against M Amit Salunkhe relating to Jharkhand's Excise Policy for the year 2022, we view these claims as entirely false. Salunkhe has been wrongfully implicated by investigative agencies, and the case remains sub judice before the courts in Ranchi. We have absolute confidence in the Indian judiciary and are certain that all truth will soon be vindicated,' the spokesperson said.

Gujarat Congress leader files complaint against news channel editor, anchor for defamation
Former Union Minister and newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the Gujarat Assembly, Dr Tushar Chaudhary, has lodged a complaint of defamation and under Atrocity Act against the editor of a news channel and an anchor of another on Friday evening. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his father, former Chief Minister of Gujarat, the late Amarsinh Chaudhary. The complaint against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel, and Gopi Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News channel, was registered in Tapi district. The complaint was registered under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. He said in the FIR, 'A live news debate video came to my personal assistant's mobile phone on July 22' where the statements were made. Talking to The Indian Express, Chaudhary said, 'My father and I got elected from the ST reserved seat, and we are also leaders of the tribal community. Both the accused had uttered statements defaming me, my father and my entire community, and we will not let this go.' Speaking to The Indian Express, Ghanghar said, 'Chaudhary has lodged a complaint against me and Mehta, and we are also looking into ways to respond to it legally. Till now, I have not received any call from Tapi police.' Deputy Superintendent of Police, SC/ST cell, Tapi district, Nikita Shiroya said, 'We have registered an offence against both the accused. We will first gather the original video footage of the debate so that we can determine the topic of discussion, the statements made, and the context in which they were made. Currently, we are at the stage of collecting evidence, and if necessary, we will again contact the complainant and take his statement. We are also looking for both the accused and will see what they have to say.'
