Independence Day Parade in Carpentersville salutes the good old red, white and blue

Chicago Tribune21 hours ago

Amadeus Franco's favorite parts of Saturday's Independence Day parade in downtown Carpentersville? Collecting candy from the parade participants throwing pieces into the crowd and getting a chance to see the 'little cars.'
Those cars were the miniature '57 Chevys, about an eighth of the size of the actual thing, being driven by the West Suburban Shrine Club as part of village event, which was held for a third year on the Saturday before the Fourth of July holiday.
Shriner Seth Markham, behind the wheel of the blue Chevy, said they get a kick out of the audience cheering their appearance.
'It's awesome. It makes it all worth it,' Markham said just before the parade stepped off at Lincoln Avenue and Main Street. 'It makes your day, for sure.'
It was the first of two parades the club was going to attend with the cars Saturday. On Thursday, July 4, they'll be participating in four, he said.
Their appearance is part of Carpentersville's effort to 'have something for everyone,' said Greta Salamando, the village's business and community engagement coordinator. 'We want to be inclusive and bring some fun, excitement and music (to the event).'
They also wanted a hometown feel so many of the marchers represented different aspects of the village, Salamando said.
This year, more than 50 units made up the procession, 10 more than last year, she said.
In addition to the Shriners' Roaring '57 Chevys, new to the lineup were the Brass Works, a brass band that played Mardi Gras and patriotic music, and a bubble performer from Glenn David Productions, Salamando said.
The grand marshal was Specialist 5 Bill McConney, a Carpentersville resident and Vietnam veteran.
Plenty of red, white, and blue befitting the holiday could be seen everywhere along the parade route, including the outfit being worn by Rachel Duck, a member of The Bridge Church, which is based in Barrington and wants to build a new church on land purchased in Carpentersville, she said.
Church members decorated a truck with animals and florals, emphasizing the idea that we should 'see God in the small things,' Duck said.
Fellow member Kelly Yarrington said, 'Our hearts are for the community.'
The parade route took participants over the Fox River bridge, where a reviewing stand DJ announced each group, float or decorated vehicle as it passed by en route to Carpenter Park, where the annual Duke's Blues Festival started at noon.
The two-day event, held as a fundraiser for nonprofit Taste the Love, featured blues musicians and finger-licking barbeque.
Duke's Blues Festival, presented by the nonprofit Taste the Love, coincided with the Independence Day Parade and Dundee Township Park District's annual fireworks display on Saturday night.
Terrance 'Duke' Seward, owner of Duke's Blues-N-BBQ and founder of the blues festival, approached the village about sharing the date this year so the two events could be linked.
'This year, we have Duke's Blues Fest so people can go to the parade and stay and hang out at the blues fest and then end their evening with fireworks,' Salamando said.
As for Amadeus, the thing he's really looking forward to is that fireworks display. It's the only thing he could talk about for the last week, his mother, Rosa Onofre, said.
Her love the holiday, she said, is a little more big picture — it's about 'being an American and the freedom.'

Your Horoscope for the Week of June 29

Summer is here and it's hot! On July 29, Mercury in Leo opposes Pluto retrograde in Aquarius, adding fuel to all the drama going on in your life. A simple question or answer could lead to an intense battle. Be cognizant of interactions and stay in your lane. A few hours before Venus switches signs on July 4, the planet of romance connects with Uranus in Taurus. Emotions will be wobbly and inconsistent in the morning hours. Venus enters Gemini close to noon on July 4, bringing extreme flirtiness to the Fourth of July parties—whether you link up with someone new or get cuddly with your significant other, a playful and witty vibe will draw you closer to each other. Neptune Retrograde in Aries commences the same day, making us see through the facade. We want realness in our lives. Keep reading on what's in the cards for your sign this week. Tensions are rising with your crew! You're taking too much of the lead and dictating rules of friendship. Loosen the leash, and you'll find that you don't have to be in control to ensure your squad is loyal. They know you're the bees' knees and will treat you that way. All work and no play makes you act out to seek adventure. If you don't allow yourself the opportunity to cut loose, you'll begin to resent your job. Use your vacation days and take time off this summer, even hanging out locally will boost your vibe and help you decompress. Some of your words are being taken out of context, causing arguments with others due to miscommunications. Tonality can be hard to interpret in text and email, which is why you should clear the air by having a face-to-face or phone conversation. Your voice will help them understand your intentions. You're waffling back and forth about asking for the raise you deserve. Shoot your shot and go for it! You'll find that your boss and management are in agreement. Everyone wants you to succeed, so their support is valuable. They got your back and will help get you more cash. You've got something up your sleeve, but you will not share the deets until you are ready. Your partner is shutting down because they know you are hiding a secret. Give them a taste of the tea so they're in the know. Then, you can explain yourself without pressure. You're not phony, but you don't like to be unliked. Even though people get under your skin, you put the rizz on to make them feel like nothing is wrong. Now, you might get called out by another pal tired of your attitude, putting you in fight or flight mode. Reading between the lines allows you to find meaning in a subtext. If someone wants to drag or throw shade at you, it'll be challenging for them to do so because your defenses are up. Yes, you're docile 99% of the time, but the intensely protective 1% is coming through. You're trying really hard to stop disagreeing with your squad. The truth is, you should never be someone you're not. The bottom line is that it's okay to disagree with the opinions of others. For all you know, their perspectives will change to yours. Always speak your mind. Seeing is believing, which is why you're not giving in or making a decision before looking over the receipts and facts of the situation at hand. Only evidence will sway you; who's the jury in the matter, so you might as well let everyone know you're deliberating until further notice. You shouldn't have to suss out your besties to get the real story from them. If someone (or a few peeps) is not being 100% upfront with you, consider putting them on ice until you are ready to have a tough discussion about honesty. You deserve better, Cap! Lately, romance has been hot and cold. The week ahead brings your feels to a feverish pitch, pushing you to commit and give your all to a crush. The caveat is you may promise more than you can provide, so be aware of the expectations you are putting out there. The fireworks aren't the only things sparking up the sky with glamour on the 4th of July. Your new look is bringing the heat to the celebration. Own your fabulousness and post thirst traps to let the world see how beautiful you are by sending compliments — particularly from your boo.
