Wales is about to get its own metro network – here's what it means for visitors

Yahoo04-05-2025
It has been dubbed the 'Welsh Tube'. It hopes to transform car-free travel around South Wales. And it comes with a colour-coded map reminiscent of the London Underground. But the South Wales Metro, the new £1 billion transport system from rail operator Transport for Wales (TfW), is less 'Mind the Gap', more 'What's occurrin'?'.
The Metro promises 105 miles of largely overground travel, linking the Welsh capital with major visitor attractions at Caerphilly and Barry Island, among others. Think greener, quieter trains on six electrified lines, new stations, better access and a contactless payment system – much like London's Oyster card. But don't expect it tomorrow. The project aims for completion in 2026, forming part of a wider transport plan around Cardiff. Works are ongoing, and the line that runs to Rhymney, north of Cardiff, for example, will be subject to dreaded rail replacement services throughout this summer.
'We're working through the transformation of the Valleys Lines with some 70 per cent of lines now electrified and new trains rolling out,' says Kelsey Barcenilla, stakeholder manager for TfW. 'In the short term, passengers can expect a better experience, more frequent services and ticketing improvements, plus a new bus interchange near to Cardiff Central station. Longer term, the South Wales Metro will entice more passengers away from their cars, given the improved infrastructure.'
It's good news for visitors confused by Wales's controversial 20mph speed limit. While still enforced on roughly one third of roads, some local councils have reversed the limit back to 30mph. Despite criticism, the speed limit has been credited by the Welsh Assembly Government for a decrease in the number of casualties from road collisions.
But letting the train take the strain, and changing lines easily, is now more viable with increased weekday, evening and Sunday services between Cardiff and the heads of each valley (Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Treherbert). The project also takes a step towards facilitating the Cardiff Crossrail, the on-street tram service, linking Cardiff Central with Cardiff Bay. It hopes to be operational when the city acts as a host city for the 2028 European Football Championship.
The rollout of the South Wales Metro has not been universally welcomed, however. The focus is on South Wales with little obvious benefit to other regions. Celebrations are underway to mark the centenary of the birth of the Valleys-born actor Richard Burton, but while Port Talbot is on the rail network, the village of Pontrhydyfen, where he was born, requires car access.
To head to Wrexham, where the Hollywood-backed football team just secured a historic third promotion to play in the Championship next season, visitors would currently need to catch a train to Shrewsbury – across the English border – and change to a Chester train via Wrexham General. Transport links will be explored as the former industrial city in North East Wales bids to be the UK City of Culture 2029. Concerns over links between South and North Wales are further compounded by the prospect of a £1.25 per night tourism levy to be introduced across Wales from 2027 if the legislation clears the Welsh Parliament.
'It may be good for tourists visiting Cardiff and the valleys but no, there's no benefit beyond Merthyr, or towards Pembrokeshire,' says Sean Westlake, chair of Wales Official Tourist Guides Association (Wotga). 'There are links across Wales with the two trunk roads through Mid Wales and TrawsCymru buses, but the journey times are long.'
'What Wales really needs, sustainable transport-wise,' he adds, 'is a more integrated system of train and bus between south and north.'
For people travelling around South Wales, however, there is car-free industrial heritage, ancient castles, and kiss-me-quick fun to be had, plus a wider move towards smoother, greener travel. 'I'm excited for the link from Rhymney to Barry via Cardiff,' says Kelsey at TfW. 'I'll be heading to Barrybados with the family for seaside days out.'
And that, as Nessa would say, is 'tidy'.
It may not be open just yet, but it's never too early to dream up the excellent Welsh minibreaks the new trains will make possible. Just pick your favourite destinations, and mark your calendar.
Start your day in Cardiff Bay, taking in sites such as the Wales Millennium Centre, a must for Doctor Who fans, the Senedd parliament building and the hidden gem Norwegian Church, the old seaman's chapel turned arts centre. Then jump on the train for the hour-long journey to Caerphilly, home to the largest castle in Wales – and a crumbly, white cheese. The castle saw action battling Welsh princes and English Civil War skirmishes, before the Marquess of Bute restored it in the 1920s. It's a short walk from the station, with glorious grounds for sunny-day mooching.
From Queen Street, it's one hour to Merthyr, the line running via Llandaff in Cardiff's leafy north-west suburbs. Jump off for a stroll around the village, where the writer Roald Dahl attended school in the 1920s in the shadow of the towering Gothic cathedral.
A blue plaque outside the former High Street sweetshop recounts the story of the Great Mouse Plot, his boyhood prank to leave a dead mouse in a jar of Gobstoppers. Back on the train, it's a story of industrial heritage, with Merthyr once the world's largest iron-producing town. Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Gallery tells the story of the town's radical past, while the 160-acre parkland has a model railway and family activities.
After breakfast in Cardiff, exploring the cafes of the Victorian arcades, or a stroll in Bute Park, make a day-trip pilgrimage in the footsteps of Gavin and Stacey. It's only 40 minutes away, but there are, confusingly, three local stations. Barry Island is best for kitsch seaside fun, and Barry station itself is nearest to the Goodsheds, a new shipping-container village packed with shops, restaurants and bars.
Try Cozy Tapas for bottomless brunch and stock up on Welsh craft ales at Craft Republic, a dog-friendly independent bar and bottle shop. There's a self-guided trail of locations from the television series to download. Take a selfie by the mural outside Marco's, the promenade café where Stacey works in the show and Nessa's Slots amusement arcade round the corner. Stacey's home is the final stop, the residential house at 47 Trinity Street regularly attracting a small gathering of devotees. Crackin'.

Royal Caribbean makes popular cruise ship pool adults only

Royal Caribbean makes popular cruise ship pool adults only originally appeared on TravelHost. Although Royal Caribbean is a family cruise line that has long designed its ships for family vacations, its newest cruise ships have broad appeal and are attracting more young adults than ever. Today, about half of Royal Caribbean cruise passengers are Millennials and younger, and that includes adult Gen Z vacationers in their 20s as well as Millennials who don't have kids. Royal Caribbean is attracting younger audiences not just because of its ships' thrilling onboard attractions, entertainment, and nightlife, but for its resort-style pools and bars, its newest Icon Class ships, adults can enjoy elevated beach club vibes at The Hideaway, an adults-only area at the back of the ship that features a wraparound bar and suspended infinity pool offering unmatched ocean views. But The Hideaway isn't the only area of the ship that was designed specifically for adults. Originally, Royal Caribbean planned to make top-deck Cloud 17 the adults-only area of the ship, but changed things up shortly before Icon first set sail. The Hideaway made more sense as an adults-only space tucked away at the back of the ship. That doesn't mean that Cloud 17 and other onboard hangouts aren't popular spots for adults who want to relax on the pool deck, however. One unique pool within Chill Island has always made more sense as an adults-only space. But Royal Caribbean never took steps to keep kids out of the area — until now. Royal Caribbean makes Swim & Tonic swim-up bar adults only Royal Caribbean just made its cruise ship swim-up bar, Swim & Tonic, adults only, according to Royal Caribbean Blog, an unofficial fan blog not affiliated with the cruise line. A passenger sailing aboard Icon of the Seas sent a photo to Royal Caribbean Blog of a new 'adults only' sign posted at the entrance to Swim & Tonic. A tropically themed pool area featuring a swim-up bar and tables and loungers in the water, Swim & Tonic is a popular spot for adults vacationing with and without & Tonic was previously open to passengers of all ages, and kids often joined their parents in the in-water bar. Now, the popular Icon of the Seas pool is off limits to anyone under the age of 18. Although Royal Caribbean hasn't commented on the reason behind the change, the cruise line likely added the new rule in response to passenger feedback. Icon of the Seas passengers have long argued that Swim & Tonic should be an adults-only space. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. Adults have valid concerns about kids in Swim & Tonic For many passengers, it's not only about maintaining a relaxing vibe in what's intended to be a refreshing swim-up bar space, it's about keeping pool water out of their drinks. 'I hated the fact that kids were allowed in the swim-up bar. Got pool water in my drinks because of the kids splashing,' Lopsided_War1859 wrote in a thread about the issue posted in the Royal Caribbean community on Reddit. Another passenger's experience revealed something else that causes a problem when kids play in the swim-up bar pool. 'My husband and I weren't able to visit the swim-up bar once on our honeymoon due to the pool being closed for cleaning. It was a daily occurrence for kiddos to have an accident of some sort in that pool,' Gold-Anything4801 Caribbean passengers have also argued that there are plenty of other pools for kids to play in on board Icon of the Seas, including other pools in and around central Chill Island, but there's only one true adult pool — the infinity pool in The Hideaway. Making Swim & Tonic adults only is a move that makes sense to many cruisers, and passengers will surely be eager to see if the new rule applies to Swim & Tonic on the newest Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas, too. Star of the Seas sets sail on its first cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida in August. I stayed at a resort with one of the largest pools in Hawaii. Its other amenities were so good that I barely swam in it.

Most travelers have an amenity that either makes or breaks a hotel reservation. For me, it's the pool. Each year, I spend about 60 nights in hotel rooms — but I'll only book a stay after I've scanned a property's website and socials to confirm it has a pool that looks like the epitome of relaxation. Honestly, I care about having a pool more than I do a great view from my room or a rainfall shower. I love swimming, and I'm even happir when I can enjoy comfy lounge chairs and poolside service between dips. Such lounging is exactly what I anticipated as I wheeled my carry-on past the pool during a late-night check-in at The Royal Sonesta Kaua'i resort in Lihue after a long travel day from the Midwest. Per its website, this Royal Sonesta is home to Hawaii's largest single-level outdoor pool. I couldn't wait to take a dip and lounge poolside with a book the next day. Much to my surprise, I kept skipping the pool From above, the resort's massive pool is shaped like a flower with lounge chairs and palm trees in the above-ground center that guests can swim (or walk a narrow path) to get to. Surrounded by cabanas, hundreds of chaise lounge chairs, and massive stone creatures spouting water, it was picture-perfect. The next morning, as I walked to breakfast, I was already calculating when I'd dive into that splendid pool a flight below me. Then, I found myself walking in the opposite direction, toward other parts of the resort. Its lush tropical foliage, amazing upper-level coffee bar with gazebos overlooking the pool, and direct access to the nearby Kalapaki Beach lured me in. The uncrowded beachfront with a quiet cove was just a five-minute walk from my room. For the first two days of my stay, I nearly forgot about the pool I'd been so excited about. Finally, on day three, I changed into my bathing suit and headed to the pool. I dropped my stuff off on a lounge chair and stepped into the water. After 30 minutes, I got out — I was itching to enjoy more of the property and swim in the ocean right nearby. This was the last time I went in the pool during my four-night stay at the resort. Throughout my trip, I had a blast on the property and other spots nearby, including the beach. I swam in the ocean and lounged on the mostly empty, peaceful sands. I enjoyed tasty meals at Duke's Kauai, just minutes away. The restaurant's ice-cream-cake-like concoction, Hula Pie, was incredible. Honestly, I had more fun watching koi fish in the property's pond and the island's famous chickens outside my patio door than I ever have at a pool. Still, it looked nice — and I did order Mai Tais at the bar overlooking the pool. I didn't care much about the pool because I found so much to enjoy on and near the property From now on, I may pay more attention if a resort has ocean (or even lake) access rather than focusing on whether it has a pool. Swimming in an ocean can be superior to a man-made pool, especially if the surrounding area isn't busy or is exclusively reserved for nearby hotel guests. I still love private resort pools — and they can be a great way to dodge crowds at public beaches. However, there's far more space to spread out in an ocean, the water feels less artificial, and nothing beats the experience of waves massaging your body and salt water exfoliating your skin. So, yes, it turns out that what drew me to the resort in the first place ended up not being my favorite amenity. Travel is supposed to be full of surprises, right? I sure learned that lesson at this hotel because I'd take another bite of that Hula Cake over a pool dip.

Connor Zilisch goes for fourth straight NASCAR Xfinity Series victory

It would be difficult to imagine a performance more dominant than the one JR Motorsports driver Connor Zilisch has fashioned over the last nine races since returning from a back injury he sustained at Talladega. In that span, Zilisch won four races, including the last three in a row. He also finished second three times, along with two more top-five finishes, to post an average finish of 2.1 since Charlotte. RELATED: | With his win last Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he notched the 100th victory for JR Motorsports. At 19 years, 4 days, he's now the youngest driver to win three straight races in Xfinity Series history and to reach six career victories in the series, dethroning Joey Logano. All six of Zilisch's Xfinity wins have come in his series debuts at the respective tracks, a streak he'll attempt to maintain in Saturday's HyVee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway (4:30 p.m. ET, The CW, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Only two drivers in series history have won four straight races: Sam Ard in 1983 and Noah Gragson in 2022. Though Zilisch has never raced an Xfinity Series car at Iowa Speedway, two facts argue in his favor: he won last year's ARCA Menards Series race at the 0.875-mile short track, and Sam Mayer won last year's race with Zilisch's current crew chief, Mardy Lindley, calling the shots from Mayer's pit box. 'I was fortunate enough to win the ARCA race at Iowa last year, so I'm looking forward to using what I learned in that race with a new challenge in the Xfinity car,' Zilisch said. 'My crew chief, Mardy Lindley, won the race there with Sam Mayer last year, so I know we'll have a really good KOA Chevrolet when we get to the track this weekend. 'We've been on a roll lately with top-five finishes and trips to Victory Lane, so I'm ready to get to the track and continue that.' The HyVee Perks 250 is the third of five short-track races on the Xfinity Series schedule this year, but neither of the winners of the first two such races will compete on Saturday. NASCAR suspended Martinsville winner Austin Hill for one race for intentionally wrecking Aric Almirola last Saturday at Indianapolis, and Bristol winner Kyle Larson is not doing double duty this weekend. Full-time Cup Series driver Austin Dillon will take Hill's place in the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet at Iowa. With five races left in the Xfinity Series regular season, there are five berths left in the playoffs. Cousins Jeb Burton and Harrison Burton are on opposite sides of the eligibility bubble, with Jeb Burton holding a 10-point edge for the final spot in the playoffs.
