'Cleanfluencers' reveal 10 nifty hacks to keep your house smelling great between deep cleans

Daily Mail12-06-2025

No matter how hard you scrub the floors, a house doesn't feel clean until it smells good.
This was the idea that FMCG giant Procter & Gamble used to turn its air freshener Febreze from a 'flop' into a billion-dollar brand in the late Noughties - after it initially struggled to find buyers.
By scenting the originally odour-less spray - that was designed to eliminate bad smells - the firm saw a massive uptick in sales of Febreze as people incorporated it into their daily lives as the final step of their cleaning rituals.
The pleasant scent felt like a reward for their effort - an aspect of human psychology that has fuelled the sales of air fresheners, disinfectants, candles, and diffusers alike while also leading many to come up with their own, free hacks to make homes smell amazing.
For instance, UK-based cleaning influencer Carly Wood - who has over 50,000 followers - recently revealed her top secrets for a divine-smelling house in a clip as she confessed 'it's the biggest compliment for me'.
And it all starts with the basics, with Carly advising homeowners to deal with their bins as promptly as possible because they 'stink very quickly'.
Her next 'old-school' trick is to add a few drops of essential oil to the inside of your toilet tube rolls. This will release the scent every time the roll spins, and you can do this every three-four days to keep your loo smelling delightfully fresh.

Finally, Carly advised pouring your best-smelling disinfectant in the sink, followed by some boiling water, as the scent diffuses through your home.
3. Astonish Zesty Lemon Concentrated Disinfectant 300ml £1.20 Shop
Elsewhere, popular 'cleanfluencer' Georgia - who co-hosts The Homebirds podcast - shared her most effective hacks to 'make your home smell BEAUTIFUL' on TikTok last week.
Her first trick is to stick felt pads in your drawers and spritz your favourite perfume on it.
4. Argos Home Felt Gard 25mm Round Pads - 16 Pack £1.50 Shop
Spraying crease releaser on your bedsheets and duvet covers will keep your bedroom smelling lovely for hours, she added, and popping a dryer sheet into your pillowcases before washing them is also incredibly effective.
5. Lenor Crease Releaser Spray Removes Creases in Fabric, £10.23

'The next time you find yourself mopping your bathroom, don't just stop at mopping the floor,' she continued.
Georgia advised using a floor cleaner with a strong scent, like Astonish's Peony Bloom variant, to swab her bathrooms walls and ceiling as well.
'I kid you not, the smell lasts for days.'

Meanwhile, one of Australia's best-known home influencers, Chantel Mia, surprised her 1.6 million TikTok followers when she revealed she mopped the tiles in her bathroom using shaving cream to 'neutralise odours'.
8. Gillette Classic Sensitive Shave Foam 200ml £2 Shop
In a separate video, she tested different hacks that make her house always smell good and shared the best budget-friendly tricks - including popping two tablespoons of vanilla extract in a baking dish and put it in the oven to 'bake' for a few minutes.
'Your home will smell like cookies,' she revealed.
9. Nielsen Massey Vanilla Extract £7 Shop
The Melbourne-based mum also swears by dunking cotton balls in essential oils and placing them strategically around the house including under bin liners.
For the tenth tip, it's worth looking into high quality room sprays to upgrade your cleaning routine with minimal effort.
Co-founder of cleaning brand Preston Lane Preston Konrad states 'scent is half the battle.
'You know the feeling when you walk into a hotel and everything just smells clean? That's not bleach - it's intentional fragrance. I believe scent is one of the most powerful tools in your cleaning routine. Products that smell amazing instantly make your space feel fresher, even if it's not perfectly spotless.'
Preston Lane has rolled out its range of innovative water-based room sprays made without no nasties imbued with scents that will transport you to a sun-soaked European holiday destination.
Otherwise, Neom are known for their luxury home fragrances.
If you'd like to whip up a DIY scent for your house, Chantel recommended boiling one sliced lemon, four sprigs of fresh rosemary, and one tablespoon of vanilla extract to create a refreshing scene.
'Allow to simmer to fill your home with fragrance,' Chantel wrote and carefully carried the pot of scented water around her home.
'Remember to keep topping up with water throughout the day.'
TikTok users were thrilled with the insight, and one woman questioned how the leftovers should be used.
'Distilled water is a great room spray, or with 50/50 white vinegar and water you can make a multipurpose cleaner,' Chantel said.
She also said the homemade scent last up to three full days, while a homemade spray would last a few months.
'Going to do that today, hopefully get rid of the foggy smell - all natural as well!' another person wrote in the comments of the video.
'I did this last night and it smelt like Williams Sonoma!' another said.

Popular crisps brand brings back iconic flavour which rivals Walkers classic

A POPULAR crisps brand has brought back an iconic flavour which rivals an axed Walkers classic. Calbee UK has relaunched its Seabrook crinkle cut Tomato Ketchup bags to shopper fanfare. Eaters can pick up packs of six 25g bags for £1.45 in Morrisons, with each bag containing 124 calories. Shoppers can't get enough of the returning crisps, which are similar to Walkers' Tomato Ketchup bags, that were confirmed as re-launched in March after being axed in 2023. Posting on Facebook, one said: "As a teenager I loved these, my bestie bought me a case of the loose bags for my birthday. Best crisps ever!" Another commented: "If they are the same as before they were delicious." Meanwhile a third added: "Wahoo got one xx they taste amazing in a sandwich for the added crunch." A fourth, posting a photo of a pack after buying one, chipped in: "Finally got myself a bag of vintage." The Sun has asked Calbee when the limited edition crisps re-launched and how long they are on sale for and we will update this story when we have heard back. It comes just days after KP Snacks revealed it was bringing back Disco pickled onion, last seen on shelves in 2005. The tangy snack is being launched in convenience stores across the UK from August 27 with a 70g bag costing £1.35. Meanwhile, Aldi has confirmed it is bringing back "addictive" crisps in a matter of months after they were axed. Which chocolate bars have been discontinued in the UK? Shoppers can buy the 105g bag of the Specially Selected Prawn Cocktail crisps for £1.05. OTHER ITEMS MAKING A COMEBACK Retailers often bring back nostalgic and previously discontinued items, based on customer demand and appetite. Meanwhile, White chocolate Maltesers made a grand return to shelves earlier this year after a 10-year hiatus. A 30g bag is currently available to buy in Morrisons for £1.05, while a larger 74g pouch costs £1.75. Elsewhere, Opal Fruits, which were rebranded as Starburst in 1998, are available from Sainsbury's for £1.25. Why are products axed or recipes changed? ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders. Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether. They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers. There are several reasons why this could be done. For example, government regulation, like the "sugar tax," forces firms to change their recipes. Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs. They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable. For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018. It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version. Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year. Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks. While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose. In other retail news, Aldi is selling nostalgic childhood crisps for just 99p. Plus, Tesco shoppers are rushing to buy a stunning"reduced to clear" item scanning for 40% off. .

Wimbledon's model 'monster' who is 'certain' to win multiple tennis majors: How Jack Draper has primed himself to follow in Andy Murray's footsteps

Much of the chatter around Wimbledon in recent days has been about Andy Murray and the statue that will honour him at the All England Club by 2027. For the first time in two decades, Murray won't play. The beacon of British men's will watch from the sidelines as Draper, the man once hailed by Tatler magazine to have a 'jawline sharper than a Stanley knife', carries the torch. 'He had competitive spirit and unbelievable craft on the court,' Draper has said of Murray. 'So whenever I watch him play, I'm reminded of the times I used to watch him and wanted to be a player myself. Watching him always inspires me the next day to want to improve even more.' Now Draper and British tennis must look forward, not back. ' Jack Draper is going to contend for Grand Slams and Wimbledon is probably his best chance,' Nick Kyrgios, a long time friend of Murray's, told talkSPORT this week. There are obvious differences to Murray that see Draper pique the general public's interest beyond his vicious forehand. Nike, Vodafone, Burberry and Dunlop and all major sponsors of Draper, while he has been signed to IMG models since the age of 18 before his tennis skyrocketed. 'He is already one of the most talented athletes of his generation,' Burberry said in a statement after signing Draper up in April of this year. Last September he was front and centre at London Fashion Week and he counts departing Vogue editor Anna Wintour as a close ally. 'She's really supportive,' Draper told the Times of the fashion titan's unwavering support. 'It was amazing to see that world.' It underlines the modern trend of tennis players and the world of fashion. Emma Raducanu has enjoyed lucrative tie-ups with the likes of Tiffany and Dior, while Jannik Sinner is a Gucci brand ambassador. He is single - albeit putting no energy into dating apps he has been known to frequent, like invitation-only app Raya, these days. Draper likes a coffee but has a strict no-caffeine rule when he's playing - unless an emergency arises as it did back in October in the semi-finals of the US Open when he demanded a can of coca-cola as a Hail Mary attempt to try and down world No 1 Sinner. But Kyrgios is right, too. As world No 4, Draper's expectation will be for a deep run here and seeing world No 2 Carlos Alcaraz make hard work of round one will, privately no doubt, have boosted the levels of optimism. DRAPER BY NUMBERS 107 Wins from 166 singles matches on the ATP Tour in his career. 3 Singles titles, including one ATP Masters 1000 title — in March at Indian Wells, where he beat Holger Rune in the final. 4 Current world ranking, the highest of his career so far. 2 Draper's Wimbledon record is surprisingly poor, his best efforts coming in 2022 and 2024 when he was beaten in the second round. £5.9m Prize money won since turning professional in 2018. Back in 2021, then aged just 19, Draper was a relatively unknown quantity to those outside of the tennis cognoscenti. Draper comes from strong tennis stock. Nicky, his mum, was a junior tennis champion, while his grandparents on his mum's side were competitive players. His brother Ben, who is now his agent, was a college tennis player at the at University of California, Berkeley, while dad, Roger, was chairman of the Lawn Tennis Association until 2013. But even so, when he arrived here for round one of Wimbledon armed with a wildcard and handed the daunting task of facing then world No 1 Novak Djokovic on his senior debut, little was expected outside of giving it a good go. He took a set, immediately announcing himself and endearing himself to a frenzied home crowd. These days everybody knows his name. He's gone from a 'plucky' youngster to a monster that knows he can go the distance. Last year, too, should give Draper plenty of belief as he went through the gears at a staggering rate. Draper won his first senior title in Stuttgart last June and quickly cemented himself as British No 1, before reaching the US Open semi-finals in September, the first British man since Murray way back in 2012 to go that far in New York. The British No 1 claimed his first senior ATP title on grass at the Stuttgart Open last summer A month later the biggest title of his career to that point arrived as he stormed to victory at the Vienna Open. Back in March he added Indian Wells, a huge title on the ATP Tour. Draper's stock is going up and up, fuelling comparisons to Murray. 'I'm not trying to be the next Andy Murray,' he told the Times in January. 'He's one of the greatest players there ever was and ever will be, and to put that level of pressure on myself, I just don't do it. I focus on achieving my own potential, whatever that looks like.' Sadly for Draper, the spectre of Murray looms over him - and every other British men's player - until they can get themselves over the top at Wimbledon and get their hands on the trophy. Do that and Draper will have carved out his own path to tennis supremacy, with a photoshoot or two slotted in along the way.
