Lucknow: In a blow to inter-state narcotics trade, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of
Uttar Pradesh
, in coordination with the Thakurganj police, busted a family-run drug racket and arrested four people, including an elderly man, his son, and daughter-in-law, with narcotics worth Rs 10.29 crore in the international market.
While the arrests took place in Rautghat locality of Lucknow on Sunday morning, the matter came to the fore on Monday.
The accused have been identified as Shravan Kumar Nishad (65), his son Ayush Nishad (20), daughter-in-law Neha Nishad (24), who is the wife of another son), and Sulfiyan (20), a close associate from Wazirbagh.
"The entire family was running the racket. Drugs were brought from Barabanki and sold from their house.
One more family member is on the run who will be nabbed soon," said SHO, Thakurganj, Shrikant Rai.
According to ANTF officials, the joint team recovered 1kg of morphine, 252 grams of charas, 5.5 kg of ganja, and 6 grams of MDMA (mephedrone) from the accused, along with Rs 79,530 cash, a 100 Euro note, four mobile phones, and a car used for transporting the contraband.
"The family was operating as a cohesive drug distribution unit, sourcing and selling high-value narcotics across the state. The involvement of three members from a single household shocked investigators and raised concerns over evolving patterns in the drug trade where trusted family links are being used to reduce risk and avoid detection," the SHO said.
He said that an FIR under sections 8, 20, 21, 29 of the NDPS Act had been filed at Thakurganj police station. Further investigation is underway to identify the source network and possible interstate links.

L-G orders probe into ‘₹145-cr. coaching scam' during AAP rule

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday said Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) V.K. Saxena has directed the Anti-Corruption Branch to investigate an alleged ₹145-crore scam by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) under the Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana, a scheme meant to provide free coaching to marginalised students. Addressing a joint press conference with Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh, Mr. Sood said that the AAP government indulged in corruption during the COVID-19 period, using a scheme meant for students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) as a cover for massive financial irregularities. Mr. Sood said the scheme had originally promised free coaching for SC/ST students for exams such as UPSC, NEET, and JEE. 'But unfortunately, AAP leaders indulged in corruption... This is not only an insult to Babasaheb's vision but also a betrayal of thousands of students who relied on this scheme to shape their future,' he said, vowing that the culprits will not be spared. Citing data, the Minister said that while 4,900 students were enrolled in 2018 and 2,071 in 2019, the number of students claimed to have been coached between July 2021 and August 2022 shot up dramatically. Despite the scheme's original budget of ₹15 crore, coaching institutes submitted claims worth ₹145 crore. 'Fake bills' Mr. Sood alleged that although data was submitted for nearly 13,000 students, only 3,000 could be verified, with no supporting documents found for the rest. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta echoed the allegations in a post on X, claiming that 'serious financial misconduct' had occurred in 2020-21. 'The budget of this scheme was only ₹15 crore, but the AAP government forwarded files with fake bills exceeding ₹142 crore,' she wrote. She also alleged that claims were submitted without supporting documents, applications lacked signatures, and some institutions raised 100% claims in the names of Dalit students who never actually received coaching. 'AAP has insulted the ideals of Babasaheb and tainted the sacred field of education,' Ms. Gupta said, asserting that the Anti-Corruption Branch would investigate the case thoroughly and bring the guilty to justice. The L-G's office is yet to issue an official statement. The schemewas launched in 2018 to support students from SC, ST, and OBC communities with an annual family income of less than ₹8 lakh. It aimed to provide free coaching for competitive exams like engineering, medicine, and civil services, with the Delhi government covering the fees. AAP response In a sharp rebuttal, AAP issued a statement and urged the BJP to 'move beyond rhetoric' and vendetta campaigns and focus on governance. 'They have shut down a functioning model. The electricity, the health services, the education reforms –all halted. Instead of working, BJP leaders spend their days abusing AAP and Arvind Kejriwal. They have no vision, no plan,' it said. AAP challenged the BJP to inspect all aspects of its infrastructure. 'Check every brick in Delhi's schools, every needle in our Mohalla Clinics. Check the buses, the hospitals – check it all. But after you're done with your witch-hunt, start doing some real work,' the party said.

Two held for assault, blackmail of man after connecting via LGBTQ dating app

DAYS AFTER a 22-year-old restaurant staffer was attacked and robbed of cash after he was called for a meeting by a man he met on a dating application for LGBTQ persons, police arrested two suspects who had forcibly recorded videos of the victim before robbing him. A First Information Report in the case was registered at Nanded City Police station by the 22-year-old man who works at a restaurant. According to the FIR registered on Monday, the complainant had been using a dating app for LGBTQ persons. He had recently connected with a person on the application and the other person had shown interest in meeting. On Monday, when the complainant went to meet the person, he was forced to get into a car. The two men in the car, forced the victim to take his clothes off, attacked him and recorded his videos. Threatening to release the videos, the duo forced the victim into making online transfers of Rs 8,000. As the police launched a probe, they zeroed in on two suspects based on technical leads. The two suspects Robin alias Shubham Kamble (27), a resident of Nanded Phata, Sinhagad Road and Omkar Mandlik (28), a resident of Vadgaon Khurd, were arrested. This was not the first incident in the recent past in which such an assault had been reported on victims who connected with suspects through LGBTQ dating apps. Last February, a 24-year-old man was attacked and robbed of his gold chain by a suspect whom he connected with throught a dating app for LGBTQ persons. The Pune police subsequently arrested two suspects and advised users of dating applications to exercise caution while meeting persons they connect with on dating apps. Recently, Pune Police booked a group of unidentified men for allegedly blackmailing a 24-year-old gay man to pay over Rs one lakh between August last year and January this year by befriending him on a dating app. Multiple such cases have been reported in the past in which people have been attacked, blackmailed, sexually abused and robbed by persons they had met on various dating apps. A police officer who was part of the investigation of the recent case said, 'Probes suggest that these suspects register on the dating application only for the purpose of targeting people in this manner. In many cases people are afraid of coming forward with complaints, especially in the cases of LGBTQ dating applications. We are making an appeal to people to exercise caution while using the dating application, especially while meeting people in person. We are also urging people to come forward and report these crimes so that the perpetrators can be caught.'
