
Indonesian shoemakers fear Trump tariffs despite lower levy
The measure was lower than the initial extra 32 percent Trump threatened in April, and better than the 20 percent he imposed on Vietnam. But Etnawati, who had plans to expand her business to the United States, said her focus would now shift to other markets. 'I have to develop a new strategy. It remains unclear when the new tariff rate Trump announced will come into effect and reaction from Indonesian officials has been muted while President Prabowo Subianto travels home from a Europe visit.
But chief negotiator Airlangga Hartarto, after meeting top US officials in Washington, said last week that the talks had been 'positive'. Prabowo suggested after the initial tariff threat in April that Trump was maybe helping Jakarta by causing it to re-think its trade surplus with the world's top economy. Data from the US Trade Representative office shows Washington's goods trade deficit with Indonesia was $17.9 billion in 2024, up 5.4 percent from the year before.

'I'm worried'
Indonesia is the third-largest footwear exporter to the US behind China and Vietnam, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity. So any new tariff was likely to damage business - particularly in Bandung, where its shoe scene is well-known internationally for beautifully hand-crafted quality leather boots. Economists in Indonesia hit out at the deal with Washington, which Trump says would get tariff-free access in return.
'This is not an agreement. It's... a one-sided agreement,' Jakarta-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) executive director Yose Rizal Damuri told AFP on Wednesday. But he predicted American consumers would likely bear the costs more than Indonesian businesses, with Trump's tariffs sweeping across many countries.
'The United States itself will be the one more affected. Prices will rise,' he said. Data on Tuesday showed US inflation spiked in June as the tolls kicked on. The shop's more seasoned workers such as Jajang - who goes by one name - have already experienced the ups and downs of business, with the Covid-19 pandemic hitting sales, and seeing dozens of colleagues laid off and several dying. 'I don't know about that issue, the important thing is that I work here,' said the 53-year-old when asked about Trump's levies.
Others aware of the Trump threat to Indonesian exports were more concerned. One of Etnawati's workers, Lili Suja'i, chipped away at a new set of boots for the three-pair Texan order - riding boots, medium casual boots and loafers - in a workshop adjacent to the store. He said he feared US customers would be put off by higher costs, with the shop his main income for his family of three. But the shoemakers are ready to fulfil any orders from Americans willing to pay the extra price.
'I'm worried, yes, but before placing an order, we negotiate the shipping costs and prices with the customer,' the 38-year-old said. 'So, we've already made a deal. If they're OK with it, we'll do it.' — AFP

Calm returns to south Syria after violence that killed 1,000
SWEIDA, Syria: Calm returned to southern Syria's Sweida province on Sunday, a monitor and AFP correspondents reported, after a week of sectarian violence between Druze fighters and rival groups that killed more than 1,000 people. A ceasefire announced on Saturday appeared to be holding after earlier agreements failed to end fighting between longtime rivals the Druze and the Bedouin that spiralled to draw in the Islamist-led government, the Zionist military and armed tribes from other parts of Syria. AFP correspondents on the outskirts of Sweida city reported hearing no clashes on Sunday morning, with government forces deployed in some locations in the province to enforce the truce and at least one humanitarian convoy headed for the Druze-majority city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that since around midnight (2100 GMT Saturday), 'Sweida has been experiencing a cautious calm', adding government security forces had blocked roads leading to the province in order to prevent tribal fighters from going there. The Britain-based Observatory gave an updated toll on Sunday of more than 1,000 killed since the violence erupted a week ago, including 336 Druze fighters and 298 civilians from the minority group, as well as 342 government security personnel and 21 Sunni Bedouin. Witnesses, Druze factions and the Observatory have accused government forces of siding with the Bedouin and committing abuses including summary executions when they entered Sweida days ago. Hanadi Obeid, a 39-year-old doctor, told AFP that 'the city hasn't seen calm like this in a week'. The interior ministry said overnight that Sweida city was 'evacuated of all tribal fighters, and clashes within the city's neighborhoods were halted'. —AFP The Observatory had said Druze fighters retook control of the city on Saturday evening. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa had on Saturday announced a fresh ceasefire in Sweida and renewed a pledge to protect Syria's ethnic and religious minorities in the face of the latest sectarian violence since Islamists overthrew longtime ruler Bashar Al-Assad in December. A spokesman for Syria's tribal and clan council told Al Jazeera late Saturday that fighters had left the city 'in response to the call of the presidency and the terms of the agreement'. Another medic inside Sweida told AFP by telephone on Sunday that 'the situation is totally calm... We aren't hearing clashes.' 'No medical or relief assistance has entered until now,' the medic added, requesting anonymity due to the security situation. State news agency SANA published images showing medical aid being prepared near the health ministry in Damascus and quoted Health Minister Musab al-Ali as saying assistance would be delivered to Sweida's main hospital, where bodies have piled up. Inside the city, where around 150,000 people live, residents have been holed up in their homes without electricity and water, and food supplies have also been scarce. The United Nations migration agency said more than 128,000 people in Sweida province have been displaced by the violence. US special envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said Sunday that the country stood at a 'critical juncture', adding that 'peace and dialogue must prevail—and prevail now'. 'All factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance,' he wrote on X, saying 'brutal acts by warring factions on the ground undermine the government's authority and disrupt any semblance of order'. Sharaa's announcement Saturday came hours after the United States said it had negotiated a ceasefire between Syria's government and Israel, which had bombed government forces in both Sweida and Damascus earlier in the week. US tariffs help push Stellantis into big loss
PARIS: Jeep owner Stellantis said on Monday it suffered a massive loss in the first half of the year, when it felt the first impact of new US tariffs and took a massive charge following a change in US laws. The 2.3-billion-euro ($2.7-billion) net loss in the first half of the year came as sales in North America continued to slump, down 25 percent by volume in the second quarter year-on-year. The carmaker, whose stable of brands also includes Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat, said first-half net revenues dropped 12.6 percent to 74.3 billion euros, according to the preliminary and unaudited results. Sales of vehicles fell by six percent in the second quarter year-on-year, after having dropped nine percent in the first three months of 2025. Stellantis said 'the early effects of US tariffs' had a 300-million-euro negative impact and disrupted its plans to boost its struggling performance in North America. Automakers have struggled to respond to US President Donald Trump's new US tariff of 25 percent on imported cars that are not largely made within North America. The company, which also owns the Chrysler, Dodge and Ram Truck brands, paused production at some plants in Canada and Mexico in April as the tariffs went into force. Stellantis said the sharp drop in North American sales volume was 'due to factors including the reduced manufacture and shipments of imported vehicles, most impacted by tariffs,' as well as lower sales for corporate fleets. Stellantis also took a 3.3-billion-euro charge, which it said was 'primarily related to program cancellation costs and platform impairments, net impact of the recent legislation eliminating the CAFE penalty rate and restructuring'. Trump's massive tax and spending legislation, approved earlier this month, removed the penalties for not respecting the so-called CAFE fuel economy targets, meaning automakers can produce and sell more higher polluting cars in the United States. The company said it was in the early stage of taking action to improve performance and profitability, with new products expected to deliver a larger impact in the second half of 2025. Stellantis suspended its financial guidance in April due to the heightened uncertainty generated by US tariffs. Analysts at finance group ODDO BHF said a drop in sales was widely expected and noted that new chief executives often clean house by passing new provisions or restructuring charges. Company veteran Antonio Filosa took over as chief executive in June and immediately launched a management shake-up. Filosa headed up the North American region that accounts for most company profits and whose struggles last year precipitated the sacking of Carlos Tavares, and has retained responsibility for the region. While the overall six-percent drop in sales volumes was in line with analyst expectations, according to ODDO BHF, the 25-percent drop was double the 12 percent foreseen by analysts. Shares in Stellantis fell 2.1 percent in morning trading on the Paris stock exchange, which was 0.4 percent lower overall.
