The six-time gold medallist's diagnosis was a terminal one and doctors gave the Scot between two to four years to live.
Hoy, 49, is determined to live every day to its fullest, so much so that he decided to give race car driving a go again.
The Scot took part in the Dark Horse Stars class of the Mustang Challenge, which is on the bill of the famous Le Mans 24, this weekend.
And Hoy, who raced in the full Le Mans in 2016, hopes him living out his final days doing what he loves will inspire other cancer sufferers to do the same.

He told TNT Sports: "I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer almost two years ago now, and it shocked me, it rocked my world.
"It changed everything in one sentence, you're told that's not curable, but it's treatable.
"So suddenly, you have this death sentence, and it's terrifying, but I'm here to show that life goes on for many people in that situation."
After completing the race, a delighted Hoy took to Instagram to write: "What a few days at LeMans.

"As my team mate for the week, Chris Harris said, you never turn down the chance to drive at LeMans.
"Speaking of Chris Harris, it was a blast to hang out, talk cars and learn from him.
"What a job he did in Race 2, P12 from 31st on the grid, making 11 places in lap one amidst the carnage and bringing the Tour de 4 liveried #77 home in style!
"I managed P20 from the same grid position in race 1, very happy to have had some awesome battles throughout the 45-minute race and get a proper hit out after frustrations in qualifying.

Sir Chris Hoy
"Massive thanks to Academy Motorsport team for all their hard work and support, what a great bunch they are.
"And finally, best of luck to all the drivers in the 24 heures du mans, I wish you a safe and successful race."
Hoy will attempt to raise £1million for UK cancer charities with a charity bike ride in September.
He said: "The bike ride is to try and get as many people together as possible.
"Not just people suffering with cancer but anybody.
"To show we can keep on living, make the most of every day and live in the present, because that's all any of us have."

She then stormed into round three for the second year running after a dominant and devastating victory over Viktoriya Tomova on Court No 3. Next up, Sonay is taking on French qualifier Diane Parry on Friday, July 4, 2025. Sonay has £152,000 in her back pocket but if she wins two sets, she will add an extra £68,000 to her bank balance. The British No.3 said: 'Obviously tennis is super expensive. 'When I was growing up, I kind of did quite a lot of tournaments on my own because I couldn't afford to pay a coach week-in, week-out. 'It helped me develop as a teenager, grow up super fast, made me much more mature. I held myself accountable to a lot of things. 'The LTA helped me massively. It came at exactly the right time. It was when I started to come on the scene and was putting together a few good wins consistently. 'They really helped to give me all the equipment and access to everything I needed to develop as well. 'I've shot up the rankings. My game style really rocketed. Wimbledon star Sonay Kartal playing for life-changing payday after struggling to afford a tennis coach 'My coaches back in the day, they would charge me I guess the lowest fee and would try to help me out as much as possible. 'I was out quite a lot of years injured as a teenager. 'I didn't pick up a racquet for a couple years. I was kind of a bit inconsistent as I was going through my teenage years.' Sonay was born in London, but grew up in Brighton with her family. Off the court, Sonay has been in a relationship with bodybuilder Luke Ogbourn. He even brought his beau a bouquet of flowers after she qualified for the first round of Wimbledon in 2024. Who is Luke Ogbourn? Luke Ogbourn is a British bodybuilder and strongman. He is best known for being in a relationship with tennis ace Sonay Kartal. Luke has been a visible and vocal supporter of Sonay, particularly during her impressive Wimbledon run last year and her first WTA singles title win at the Jasmin Open, also in 2024. Per his Instagram bio, Luke took home the silver medal at the United Kingdom's Strongest Man U23 competition in 2024, before going one better and securing gold at Iron Beasts 2024. 4 Luke Ogbourn won Iron Beasts 2024 Credit: Instagram @luke_ogbourn His profile regularly featured gym routines, rugby matches and highlights from his strongman competitions — but as of July 4, 2025, it seems to have been removed. The relationship between Sonay and Luke has been public since at least November 2023, when their first photo together appeared on Ogbourn's Instagram. Their relationship drew more attention during Wimbledon 2024 — Luke supported Sonay online and in person, sharing affectionate messages and congratulating her after matches. Despite both being athletes, Sonay said that they do not train together, telling the Express in 2024 that they "don't gym together at all". She added: 'I don't lift cars and pull cars and things like that. "Tennis is very specific training whereas he is just lifting as much weight as possibly as physically you can.' However, it is unclear whether they remain an item — Luke hasn't been spotted at Wimbledon this year. All traces of their relationship seem to have totally disappeared from social media.

"That's all I want, a fair shout. And I don't believe I've got a fair shout the last two times. "That's the one I want but if I don't get that then it will be Joshua, the biggest British fight that will ever happen. "It would break all records and sell out 100,000 at Wembley in an hour. Double funeral for slain Scots hoods Eddie Lyons Jr & Ross Monaghan to held TODAY

The pair are being laid to rest by loved-ones just over one month after being gunned down in Spain Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MOURNERS are gathering today for the funeral of slain gangland kingpins Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan - amid simmering revenge fears linked to Scotland's raging turf wars. Lyons, 46, and Monaghan, 43, are being laid to rest by loved-ones in a joint ceremony just over one month after they were gunned down in a Spanish boozer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Eddie Lyons Jnr, left, and Ross Monaghan were murdered by a gunman on May 31. 3 Monaghans bar in Fuengirola, Spain where the two hoods were assassinated. 3 CCTV captured the moment a gunman pursued Monaghan inside the death boozer. The solemn occasion comes days after we revealed authorities in Spain had handed over the pair's bodies to relatives to be repatriated to Scotland. Hundreds of friends, family and underworld figures are gathering at a crematorium in north Glasgow to show respect to Monaghan and Lyons Jnr - son of Godfather Eddie, 67, and brother of Dubai-based mob boss Steven Lyons, 44. We told how Lyons and Monaghan met their end after watching the Champions League Final in Monaghans, Fuengirola, on Saturday,May 31. In the wake of the killings, associates of the Irish Kinahan cartel leaders gave their support to the families and promised them: "We'll get this sorted." Allies of fugitive kingpin Daniel Kinahan had also told grieving loved ones they intend to pay their respects at the funerals of the executed hoods. We told how Monaghan was key in helping to cement the Glasgow-based Lyons' ties with the Kinahans, who have a £4million bounty on their heads in the US. A relative told The Scottish Sun: "Ross was very, very close with the Irish guys. He had a very close relationship with them. "The family have had a few phone calls from them to say, 'Sorry for your loss'.' We told how alleged hitman Michael Riley is to fight extradition. The 44-year-old, of Huyton, Liverpool, appeared last month at Westminster Magistrates Court as part of a bid to have him shipped to Spain. Riley's full extradition hearing will be in October and is expected to last all day. The Lyons gang kingpins were drinking in Monaghans bar when they were gunned down in front of staff and revellers. A hooded assassin was captured on CCTV storming the boozer and shooting both men dead in a targeted double hit. We told how cops in Spain and Scotland gave conflicting information over who is believed to have ordered the slayings. Police Scotland first insisted they had 'no intelligence' to suggest the murders were connected to an ongoing turf war here. However, their Spain counterparts later said the man they want extradited over the killings was 'an internal member of the rival Daniel gang'. That prompted the Scottish force to repeat their insistence there is no Daniel link to the slayings - a position also held by members of Monaghan's family. A relative of the murdered mob boss said last month: 'The one thing people need to know is the Daniels are not behind this.' We told how a captured mobile phone holds the key to proving the alleged assassination is linked to their Daniel gang rivals, sources claim. Cops are understood to have seized the mobile from the alleged hitman suspected of shooting dead the duo. Insiders say it contains data allegedly linking Riley to Daniel hoods who Spanish detectives reckon are behind the massacre. Career criminal Monaghan – who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life in 2017 – was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons Glasgow crime family, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow. The murders happened in the thick of a gang war in Scotland involving associates of caged kingpin Mark Richardson, 38, and his allies in the Daniel clan - the Lyons' arch enemies. Dubai-based hood Ross 'Miami' McGill and a group known as Tamo Junto have been targeting Richardson's associates and Daniel family members. Cops have arrested 50 people in Scotland under Operation Portaledge but McGill remains out of reach in the UAE. Scotland's top cop has warned hoods based abroad who are linked to the chaos 'We are coming for you'. Chief Constable Jo Farrell laid down the gauntlet to crime figures hiding in the glitzy desert bolthole. She said: "We're working closely with the Crown Office and the National Crime Agency (NCA) to see if we can get those people back from those countries. "These aren't fast processes, but we're working with the authorities there and the NCA have individuals in those countries. "That's our link in and we're working very closely with them.'
