Italy's Bergamo airport closes temporarily after man dies on runway during takeoff

Globe and Mail08-07-2025
Italy's Bergamo airport, which offers low-cost airline connections to and from nearby Milan, was temporarily closed on Tuesday after a man died on a runway during takeoff preparations for a flight.
Flight operations were suspended from 10.20 am till midday local time (0820-1000 GMT) 'due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway,' the airport said in a statement, adding that authorities were investigating.
A spokesperson confirmed that a man had died, adding that he was neither a passenger nor a member of airport staff.
According to the ANSA news agency, the man was sucked into the engine of a departing plane. He ran toward the moving aircraft, chased by airport police who were unable to stop him, it added.
The Bergamo police had no immediate comment.
Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea said in a statement that following an incident with an engine of its 10.35 am flight to Asturias, 'one person who was not on board ... and has no connection with the company suffered serious injuries.'
The 154 passengers on the plane were rescheduled on an afternoon flight and offered psychological support, as were crew members who may have been traumatized by the events, Volotea added.

Jannik Sinner rehires fitness coach he fired for playing role in his doping case

ROME — Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has rehired Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach nearly a year after firing him for his role in the top-ranked player's doping case. Article content The move comes after Sinner recently removed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio from his team. Article content Article content 'Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' a statement from Sinner's team said Wednesday. Article content Last year, Sinner tested positive twice for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid in March; the case wasn't made public until August, shortly before the U.S. Open, which he ended up winning for the second of his four Grand Slam titles. Article content He initially was completely cleared, based on the defense that he accidentally was exposed to the banned substance, Clostebol, via a massage from his then-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner said his fitness trainer at the time, Ferrara, purchased a product in Italy and gave it to Naldi for a cut on Naldi's finger. Naldi then treated Sinner while not wearing gloves. Article content Sinner then fired Naldi and Ferrara, and Ferrara was hired briefly by Matteo Berrettini, another Italian player. Article content The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the exoneration, and Sinner agreed to serve a three-month ban that ended right before the Italian Open in May of this year. Article content
