Eritrea: Mass Sport and Athletics Competition in Dekemhare
The event, organized in collaboration with the Culture and Sports Department in the Southern Region and the Dekemhare sub-zone administration, featured 68 athletes, including 53 female athletes, from the sub-zones of the region, clubs from the Central Region, and the Denden club. The competitions included 3,000 and 10,000-meter races for female athletes, as well as 5,000 and 10,000-meter races for male athletes.
Athlete Hirity Habte won the 3,000-meter race, while Athlete Teklehaimanot Berhene took first place in the 5,000-meter race. In the 10,000-meter category, Olympian Athlete Rahel Daniel won the women's race, and Athlete Amanuel Berhe triumphed in the men's race.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Yemane Abera, Administrator of the Dekemhare sub-zone, noted the significance of the event, emphasizing that it was held in the same area where the final offensive for the total liberation of the country took place. He also commended those who organized the colorful event.
Mr. Abraham Yohannes, Director General of Culture and Sports in the region, stated that the program was part of the 34th Independence Day anniversary celebrations and praised the strong participation demonstrated by the athletes and the public.

Eritrea: Henok Mulubrhan Winner of Magnificent Qinghai 2025
Eritrean professional cyclist Henok Mulubrhan, a member of the Astana Cycling Club and three-time African Cycling Champion, has won both the Yellow and Green Jerseys at the 24th edition of the Magnificent Qinghai 2025, currently being held in China. In the race covering 1,323.7 km, Henok finished first in the 6th stage (232.7 km), second in the 5th stage, and third in the 7th stage. Henok also secured third place in the King of the Mountain classification. Eritrea: Strong Start by Biniam Girmay at 112th Tour de France
Eritrean Olympian Biniam Girmay of Belgian team Intermarché-Wanty kicked off the 112th edition of the Tour de France with an impressive second-place finish in the opening stage. The 184.9 km race was completed in 3 hours, 53 minutes, and 5 seconds, with Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck claiming first place. Biniam crossed the finish line with the same time, narrowly missing the top spot but asserting his presence early in the competition. In the intermediate sprint, Biniam secured third place and earned 15 points in the green jersey classification. As a result, he enters Stage Two ranked second overall in both the yellow and green jersey standings and leads the white jersey category for best young rider. The second stage of the Tour will continue on Sunday with a 209.1 km route. Biniam Girmay made history in the 111th edition of the Tour de France last year, winning three stages and becoming the first Black African cyclist to win the prestigious green jersey. Tour de France: Jasper Philipsen powers to Stage 1 win
Jasper Philipsen powered to victory in a reduced bunch sprint to claim his 10th career Tour de France stage win and seize the yellow jersey, as Jonas Vingegaard showed aggressive intentions in the opening stage on Saturday. Belgian Philipsen outsprinted Eritrean Biniam Girmay and Norway's Soren Waerenskjold in impressive fashion while Dane Vingegaard and defending champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia crossed the line in the leading group. "It was a perfect team performance; we were there all day in a really nervous stage, and we knew we had to be at the front when the split happened. The team was amazing, and I just had to finish it off," Philipsen said. Philipsen, who won the green jersey for the points classification in 2023, now has the most prestigious shirt in cycling. "I could not have dreamed about this – wearing the yellow jersey and having something like that hanging in my house is going to be amazing," he said. Absent from the mini peloton were podium contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, who were caught at the wrong end of a split caused by a brutal acceleration from Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike 17km from the line, and finished 39 seconds behind. The chaotic opening day lived up to its reputation, with multiple crashes heightening the nervous atmosphere and underlining the unforgiving nature of the Tour's early stages. Sunday's second stage is a 209.1km hilly ride from Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
