Trump marks one-year assassination attempt anniversary at Club World Cup final

US president Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of a failed attempt on his life on Sunday, joining family, friends and close advisers to witness Chelsea's dominating Fifa Club World Cup final victory over Paris Saint-Germain. The president joined players on the field after the match to congratulate the tournament's outstanding performers, present PSG players with their runner-up medals and hand Chelsea their championship trophy. 'It was an upset today I guess,' Mr Trump told reporters after flying back to Washington following Chelsea's victory. 'But it was a great match.' THE TROPHY IS OURS!!! 🔵 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 13, 2025 Mr Trump and first lady Melania Trump were greeted with cheers as they arrived at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey just ahead of the pre-match performance by musical artists Robbie Williams and Laura Pausini. But the president got a smattering of boos when he was briefly shown on the stadium's mega-screen. Chelsea spoiled PSG's bid to win its fourth major title of the season, dominating throughout the match and racing to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Sunday's match fell on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt Mr Trump survived in Butler, Pennsylvania, while campaigning for president. He also hailed doctors, emergency services personnel and rallygoers who helped guide other attendees to safety, saying: 'These men and women arrived at the rally grounds as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes.' The international sporting match also offered an opportunity for Mr Trump and aides to huddle with Qatari government officials. Mr Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff, in a brief exchange with reporters ahead of the match, said he remained 'hopeful' about Gaza ceasefire and hostage negotiations. Mr Trump, right, presented the Golden Ball award for the competition's best player to Chelsea's Cole Palmer (Jacquelyn Martin/AP) Mr Witkoff, who joined Mr Trump for the tournament finale, appeared to nod affirmatively when asked by reporters if he planned on meeting with senior officials from the Gulf nation of Qatar, which is serving as an intermediary with Hamas in the talks, during the match. 'I'll be meeting them,' Mr Witkoff said. Sporting events have made up the bulk of Mr Trump's trips in the US since taking office this year. In addition to his visit to the football this weekend, he has attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500 in Florida, UFC fights in Miami and Newark, New Jersey, and the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia.

Christian Horner isn't the first high-profile figure to come unstuck by a saucy sexting scandal

Formula 1 millionaire mogul Christian Horner was sacked this week from his role as principal of Formula1 team Red Bull. Horner's sacking comes a year after the F1 race team boss was at the centre of a 'sexting' scandal after a junior member of staff at the team, accused the businessman of inappropriate and controlling behaviour. Horner, who is married to former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, has always denied the allegations against him and Halliwell, for her part, has stood steadfast by her man. Christian Horner. Pic: Vince Mignott/The news of Horner's shock exit from the F1 Red Bull team, which he has helmed for the past 21 years, comes just 15 months after the scandal that engulfed him over racy texts he allegedly sent to a female employee surfaced online. In April 2024 a series of suggestive WhatsApp messages, purportedly sent from Horner to a young female staff member, were mysteriously leaked online. Horner survived the initial scandal, but a year on from the leaked messages, he has been ousted from his role as Red Bull Team boss. But Horner is not the first high-profile man to suffer a spectacular fall from grace over saucy talk. Charles and Camilla in the 1970s. Pic:The OG of saucy-talk, King Charles caused global jaws to drop, when back in 1993 ,an intimate and explicit phone transcript to his now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles from dating back to 1989 caused a right ruccous. The full transcript of the call between Charles and Camilla was ravaged by a shocked world when they appeared in a British newspaper. The now infamous transcript spared no blushes detailing as it Charles memorably tellig Camilla how he adores 'living inside [her] trousers' and how he would like to be resurrected as her 'Tampax.' While King Charles phone indiscretions came in the pr- iphone era he is, nonetheless, duly considered the King of sexy messages and the saucy conversation with his now-wife Camilla and 'Tampongate' has lived on in infamy. Clean-cut family man Vernon Kay ,had his dirty linen aired in public, when in 2010 that he was revealed to have exchanged a series of flirty messages with Page 3 model Rhian Sugden. Tess Daly and Vernon Kay. Pic:Vernon ,who is married to the daytime presenting princess Tess Daly, issued a very grovelling apology to his wife saying : The claims led Vernon to personally apologise 'Tess is extremely upset about this and we're working through it'. 'I'm never going to do it again and hopefully I can clear the slate clean and start again. I'm so sorry. I've been an idiot and I've let my family down.' Former footballer and BBC presenter Jermaine Jenas was last year kicked to touch when he was caught up in a public sexting scandal. Jermaine Jenas. Pic:The 42-year-old was given the red card by BBC channel bosses after several people came forward alleging 'inappropriate behaviour' from the former Spurs and England star. As shocking as it is that the guy who literally wrote She Will Be Loved would (allegedly) step out on his Victoria's Secret model wife, what's even more shocking is how absolutely horrendous Levine is at the raunchy chit-chat. Adam Levine. Pic:After a handful of Instagram influencers revealed their exchanges with the Maroon 5 frontman, the world was confronted with the idea that his singing is far superior to his sexting . Anthony Weiner's epic spiral from political star to prisoner behind bars is the stuff of high political drama. A one-time shining star of the Democrat Party, Weiner had been destined to opne day becoing teh U.S President . But the New York congressman-turned-convicted sex offender White House hopes were wella nd truly scuppered when he was revealed to be a serial sexter. Wiener' by name also transpired to be Weiner by nature when the full extent of his sexual proclivities came to light. The Congressman proved to be very politically incorrect when he admitted to sending lewd photos to over a dozen women via the over the years, concealing his illicit online activities under the pseudonym 'Carlos Danger'. Anthony Weiner. Pic:Weiner's propensity for sending saucy selfies have also been blamed for causingHillary Clinton's defeat on the 2018 U.S presidential election. Weiner had been married to one of Clinton's close aides and a computer he had used for his sexting antics, was seized by the FBI, as part of an on-going investigation into Clinton's emails. Weiner's inability to keep his 'Weiner' under control eventually saw him being sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for sexting a 15-year-old girl. However, in true American form he has recently made a comeback to the political fray. In 2018 Amazon billionaire fast-tracked a series of very raunchy texts to his now-wife Lauren Sanchez. The 'private' messages were leaked to U.S outlet Page Six who detailed in intimate detail the world's richest man's sexy texts which included gems like; 'I love you, alive girl. I will show you with my body, and my lips and my eyes, very soon,' Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos. Pic: Taylor hill/Film Magic The racy messages — which reportedly included a snapshot of Jeff Bezos' private parts — were revealed a day after he announced he was divorcing his wife of 25 years, Mackenzie Bezos. Page Six spared no details in exposing Bezos with the news outlet revealing that then 54-year-old billionaire Bezos had sent Sanchez a picture of his private parts and several shirtless shots — including one where he's wearing just a towel and a big cheesy grin. James Franco. Pic: Kennedy Pollard/amfAR/amfAR via Getty Images Even before he was hit with multiple sexual misconduct allegations in 2018, James Franco's good guy image was tarnished in 2014 when an Instagram conversation between him and a fan was leaked online. Franco is believed to have accompanied the saucy texts with a sexy-dad snap to an unidentified 17-year-old girl he encountered online. Armie Hammer. Pic: Sefa Karacan/Moviestar Arnie Hammer's sexts were more disturbing than alluring. The Hollywood superstar was exposed as having a sinister side when explicit texts were exposed including deeply unsettling cannibalistic fantasies. Hammer's texts were deemed so deranged he had no recourse and completely torpedoed his career and he fled California for the Cayman Islands where he now resides in self-imposed exile selling Timeshare apartment to wealthy elderly Americans.
