TMC issues notice to party MLA for offering money to parents of child killed in bomb attack
The Trinamool Congress on Thursday (June 26, 2025) issued a show cause notice to party MLA from Debra, former IPS officer Humayun Kabir, who on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) allegedly offered money to the parents of Tamanna Khatun, the minor girl who was killed in Kaliganj, Nadia, in a crude bomb explosion.
Sources in the party said that it has sought an explanation from the MLA on why he offered money to parents of the child who was killed on Monday. The MLA had visited the residence of Tamanna on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) and allegedly offered money, which Sabina Khatun, the mother of the child, refused.
The whole incident was caught on camera where Sabina Khatun gets angry and says they do not want any money. 'No, no, no. We have a house, land. For whom will we need money? There is no one in the family to take the money,' the mother is heard telling the cop turned politician.
Mr. Kabir, however, said that he was visiting Kaliganj not as a politician but as an ordinary citizen.
Five people have been arrested so far in connection with the blast which killed the child on the day when counting of voters for the Kaliganj Assembly seat was underway on Monday (June 23, 2025). According to the West Bengal police, after reports of the electoral lead by the TMC candidate in the Kaliganj Assembly polls, a group of miscreants reportedly engaged in a celebratory procession during which crude bombs were hurled, allegedly to assert dominance over rival factions and one such bomb tragically resulted in the death of Tamanna Khatun.
The incident occurred at Molandi village in the Kaliganj Assembly seat in State's Nadia district. The parents of the deceased child said that they are living in fear.
The family members of the deceased child are supporters of Communist Party of India (Marxist) whereas the locals claimed that those arrested were supporters of Trinamool Congress.
BJP MLA and leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari lauded the victim's mother for not accepting the money from the TMC legislator. 'She is a brave woman. I salute her for not accepting the money and asking the TMC MLA to leave,' Mr. Adhikari said. Leaders of CPI(M), Congress and Indian Secular Front have also paid a visit to the family.
Prior to this, parents of the doctor who was raped and killed at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College in August 2024 have also refused any compensation from the West Bengal government.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) will elect its new national functionaries at the ongoing 18th all-India conference in Kozhikode on Sunday (June 29, 2025). Mr. Karat, a former national president of the SFI, was addressing a get-together event of former functionaries. The other participants included Biman Bose, M.A. Baby, Nilotpal Basu, K.N. Balagopal, R. Arun Kumar, among others. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is expected to attend a public meeting on Monday (June 30, 2025) to mark the culmination of the conference.

'This would not have happened if ... ': After Kaliyan Banerjee, TMC's Madan Mitra stirs row; blames victim in Kolkata gang-rape case
NEW DELHI: TMC leader Madan Mitra on Saturday, while defending his party, appeared to blame the victim in the Kolkata law college gang-rape case, saying, "If someone calls you when the college is closed, then don't go. " Addressing reporters in North 24 Parganas, the former West Bengal minister said the incident sent a message to girls about caution. 'If that girl had not gone there, this wouldn't have happened. If she had informed someone before going or had taken a couple of friends with her, then this wouldn't have happened,' he said. — ANI (@ANI) He further added, 'The one who committed this dirty deed took advantage of the situation.' Mitra also attempted to distance the party from the accused, saying, 'TMC is a big party. Someone or the other is associated with Trinamool everywhere... We get our photos taken with everyone, but what's inside a person, only a psychologist can tell.' His remarks came even as the alleged gang-rape of the 24-year-old law student continues to trigger public outrage and political backlash in West Bengal. The incident, which took place inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College, has drawn comparisons to the earlier RG Kar case, reviving grim memories of systemic lapses. According to the student's police complaint, she was raped by three men — Manojit Mishra, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer now working on an ad hoc teaching assignment, and two junior students, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed. She alleged that the trio forced her into the college guard room, undressed and gang-raped her, filmed the assault, and threatened to leak the footage if she approached police. 'When I resisted, one of them hit me with a hockey stick,' she said. 'I touched his feet, but he did not let me go.' She also reported that she was confined for over three hours and suffered a panic attack. The assailants only allowed her to use an inhaler, denying her further help. All three accused were arrested within 24 hours. Later, the college security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was also held. A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by Kolkata Police to probe the case. The accused have been remanded to police custody till July 1. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and has demanded a time-bound investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. BJP national president JP Nadda has also constituted a four-member inquiry team comprising Satpal Singh, Meenakshi Lekhi, Biplab Deb and Manan Mishra to visit the college and submit a detailed report. Meanwhile, BJP leaders across Bengal have mounted pressure on chief minister Mamata Banerjee. 'This incident reveals the character of TMC and their thoughts towards women. I demand Mamata Banerjee's immediate resignation,' said BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh. Union minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was detained by police while protesting the incident. 'This is the face of democracy in West Bengal... Mamata Banerjee has ruined it,' he said. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also hit out at the chief minister, saying, 'There is an air of disbelief about where Bengal is heading. Where there is a female chief minister, there ought to be sensitivity towards women, so why is there such cruelty?' The centring of blame on the victim by a senior TMC leader has deepened political tensions and drawn strong condemnation from opposition parties and civil society groups, who have demanded accountability, justice for the survivor, and an end to institutional negligence.

Withdraw decision to hike GLR value: CPI (M)
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the government to withdraw the decision to increase the Guideline Land Register (GLR) value in Puducherry. CPI(M) secretary S. Ramachandran, in a statement, said the government's decision to increase the GLR value would impact all sections of society. The hike imposed was around five to six times more than the existing value making registration of property a very costly affair. 'The Tamil Nadu government had also effected a hike, but it was very marginal. The Puducherry government, without increasing the GLR value for a long time, has hiked it enormously all of a sudden. The present hike should be withdrawn immediately, and a more rational approach should be adopted,' he said.
