Frans dominates to win at Baywest Mall
The 35-year-old Ikhamva Athletics Club runner crossed the finish line in 29 minutes 59 seconds to beat his winning time of 30:24 in 2024.
He was followed by teammate Sinawo Poti in 30:01, a personal best (PB) time. Nedbank Running Club's Andile Motwana took third place in 30:12.
In the women's race, Refeloe Solomons of Nedbank Running Club won the event for the first time in 37:52 ahead of Amanda Detshe of Madibaz (38:04) and Charlo's Kayla van Rensburg (38:06).
'I am happy to have won the race, but there is nothing more satisfying to me than to see my training partner Sinawo Poti coming in second and recording his PB,' Frans said.
'We have been working very hard at training with our coach, Michael Mbambani, and it showed in today's results.
'First two years of running the race, the competition was not that tough; I could do 28 minutes. But as the years go by it has become very challenging; the competition is getting tougher every year.
'When it's cold like this I can't run well, but the most important thing is to win.'
Frans said his next target was to win the inaugural Local Choice Pharmacy Govan Mbeki 10km on Sunday.
Solomons has been a force to be reckoned with in Gqeberha.
The 44-year-old recently won the Madibaz Half Marathon before taking on Saturday's race.
'This is my first Choose to Challenge win, and I feel thrilled. The preparation for the race has been good since I was coming from the cross country, and I am actually now just preparing for the SPAR women's race.
'However, there is a Great Kei Marathon in September that I want to go to run and defend my title there.
'My form is great at the moment and my victories are a testament to that. Also, the wins are just a matter of targeting and preparation; having plans.
'You have to have your short-term goals and your long-term goals.'
Race organiser Mbambani said the event was growing every year.
'We reached our target. Last year, we had 1,300 entries. On Friday, we went to bed at 1,400 entries and on Saturday morning, we went to just over 1,500 entries, s o we cannot be happier.
'We'd also like to thank our partners, the Baywest Mall and the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, for the continued support.'

Pearson shade Marlow in schools rugby thriller
Pearson withstood a courageous Marlow fightback to clinch a narrow 26-24 victory in their schools rugby match at Marlow on Saturday after leading 19-0 at the break. The first half was marked by the visiting Gqeberha team snapping up every chance which came their way to run in three tries and establish what looked like a commanding lead. Pouncing on every Marlow mistake, Denilo Jordaan, Matthew Els and Sipho Myataza scored tries for Pearson, with Keano Beling adding two conversions. An indication of the run of play in the first half came when Marlow were on the attack in the Pearson 22, but an interception saw the visitors sprint away for a try at the other end of the field. It was to Marlow ' s credit that they never gave up the fight, showing the competitive edge for which they are well known. As their forwards began to dominate up front, they came back into the game, with several powerful driving mauls putting Pearson on the back foot. They also started to take control of the scrums and were able to build the momentum which allowed them to put multiple phases together to go constantly on the attack. Flyhalf Cole Hurter capitalised on the greater share of possession and some good tactical kicking saw Marlow beginning to spend more time deep inside Pearson ' s territory. His accurate boot played a significant role in Marlow ' s fightback, while flank Adrian Joubert was one of the standout forwards with a massive work rate. Fullback Du Preez Vermaak (15) also started to threaten Pearson by finding and creating space on the counterattack from their kicks downfield. Joubert crossed for two tries and others came from Vermaak and CJ Botha, while Hurter landed two conversions. The home side levelled the score at 19-19 before Pearson fullback Jordaan, one of their outstanding players this season and a player who needs no second invitation to take a gap, took a quick tap from a penalty and outpaced the Marlow defence in a thrilling 70m dash for the line to score the winning try, converted by Beling. That made it 26-19, but Marlow refused to go away. They crossed for one more try, but the conversion flew wide and Pearson survived to win a memorable match between two gutsy outfits. PE Sports Legends Trust celebrates 10 unsung heroines
The Port Elizabeth Sports Legends Trust again acknowledged Women's Month by celebrating the lives and contributions of 10 unsung heroines in sport, arts and culture at the weekend. The vibrant Royal Tea in the beautifully draped 19th on Fifth Conference Venue in Walmer was part of the trust's 10th anniversary celebrations. It was also the third Unsung Heroines event organised by the trustees and the organisation's women's committee. SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) chief executive Nosipho Jafta was the guest of honour for the evening. Jafta praised the trust's efforts in recognising women in sport, arts and culture. 'This is amazing, this is a beautiful event,' Jafta said. 'It's always good for women to celebrate each other, to have this kind of event in Gqeberha, celebrating other women. 'I'm from Gqeberha and feel honoured to be part of this event. 'We need to do more of such events, because mothers are always known to be nation builders and this event to me is exactly that. 'We are honouring women who do not stand in front of cameras, who do not want to be praised, who don't want any accolades, they just want to be heard and seen. 'Today, we are saying to them, we see you, and it's beautiful to give people their flowers while they can still smell them, because in most cases we celebrate each other when we are no more. 'I support this initiative because I believe people must be honoured, they must be told that we are grateful for the work that they do in their communities.' Elizabeth 'Biffy' Joubert was acknowledged for her service in creating water safety awareness, as well as for many years of training educators in the skills of teaching swimming. Ursula Petersen was also honoured for having dedicated a lifetime to water skills training in the community. Truda Plaatjies, who obtained provincial hockey colours in her playing days, was honoured for her contributions to the less prominent sport of squash. Over many years, Plaatjies devoted time and energy to fostering the game at all levels. Besides being an active player, she also obtained her coaching qualification and served the province as a coach at various levels. Also honoured was Luyanda Matomela Siwisa, a top athlete who went on to serve Cowan High School for 28 years. As an educator, she went above and beyond the call of duty, producing several leading athletes and netball players, many of whom went on to gain provincial and national colours. Carol Munger was honoured for her contribution to hockey in the region. A familiar figure on the fields of Gelvandale for the Rangers Club during her playing career, she then took on a new role and served diligently over many years as the manager of EP teams. Also recognised was Rina van Zyl, who without any fanfare was involved in the welfare of young golfers, particularly in giving opportunities where previously denied. She has the distinction of being the only woman chair of a golf club, the Fairview Golf Club. Fiona Rodell was honoured for having dedicated six decades of her life to keeping the spirit of Spanish dancing alive. She has won the prestigious Molina Award an incredible 17 times. A legend in the world of dance, Maureen Gardner, was also recognised. She has enjoyed a dance career spanning 50 years, winning two SA titles with her husband, Sylvester, along the way. She actively promotes and teaches the art of dance in the community. Pinky Nkanunu was recognised as a lifelong activist for justice, equality and transformation in sport. Her quiet background efforts served as inspiration to her late husband, Silas, who was a former SA Rugby Union president. A poignant moment was the special dedication to the late Chakeera Dolley, who was honoured by the trust in 2024 for her contribution to the sport of volleyball. Another highlight was the special award presented by trustee Graeme Sauls to Barbara Gunn-Manna, who is a well-known personality in the soccer world.
