Giants place Patrick Bailey on injured list. Logan Porter gets ready for his 1st MLB game since 2023
San Francisco Giants placed Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list with a strained neck on Wednesday and selected the contract of Porter from Triple-A Sacramento. Porter had to scramble to get from Seattle on Wednesday morning but arrived in time for batting practice at Coors Field before Wednesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies.
'Almost missed the flight, a lot of traffic,' Porter said. 'I think I was the last one on the flight and security took an hour and half. It was a mess.
'A little overwhelming. I was like, 'All right, if I don't make it, this is going to be interesting.' But we made it.'
Bailey, whose trip to the IL is retroactive to Sunday, is batting .185 with one homer and 16 RBIs this season. The Giants hoped he would be OK to back up Andrew Knizner during the series at Colorado but he didn't improve.
'It's really hard to not have a second catcher and he just didn't get that much better (Wednesday),' manager Bob Melvin said. 'Didn't feel like were in position to try to push it to (Thursday). The prudent thing to do was to IL him right now.'
Bailey is the second Giants player to hit the injured list this week. Third baseman
Matt Chapman
was placed on the IL with a sprained right hand, suffered in
Sunday's win over Atlanta
.
'It seems like it comes in waves,' Melvin said. 'Everybody goes through it. Expectation doesn't change. Logan knows our guys, knows all the signs, so it's a good fit as well.'
Porter last played in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. He hit .194 over 11 games with one homer. He signed a minor league contract with San Francisco on Nov. 14, 2024, and was with the team during spring training.
Melvin said Porter will likely be behind the plate Thursday when Hayden Birdsong is on the mound. Porter caught the starters and relievers during the Cactus League and feels comfortable with them at the major league level.
'It should just be easy transition, and I'm familiar with the bullpen,' he said.
The team also designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment. He was batting .242 with four homers with Sacramento. Basabe's contract was purchased by the Giants from Tampa Bay in February.

3 ex-New York Giants named to 'The All-Time Most Actually Underrated Team'
"Underrated" is a term that has become loosely used over the past decade. Players who hardly fly under the radar have been given that label unjustly, resulting in overuse. So, what does "underrated" actually mean? And what NFL players, past or present, are actually underrated?" Diehl did really well for himself as a former fifth-round pick; he won the New York Giants' starting job at left tackle in his second season and held onto it for several years before he was asked to move around, splitting time at both guard spots and right tackle. He started 160 of his 164 games in the NFL, all with New York, and he won a pair of Super Bowl titles, too. He was a key piece of those Giants teams everyone wrote off before they played a single snap. Diehl was a key part of a Giants' offensive line that became one of the very best and most consistent in football. And for that reason, it's fitting that the next Giant on Sigler's list is fellow offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie (First Team). How many guys can they spent all 161 games playing for two different teams in the same city? McKenzie was a third-round pick by the New York Jets in 2001, but he went across town to sign with the New York Giants and ended up winning two Super Bowls there. He did a great job protecting Eli Manning all those years and anchoring the right side of the line. The way some Giants fans tell it, their team never did get around to replacing him at right tackle. Last up for the Giants is an active player who wasn't part of those offensive lines. Rather, he was a solid piece for what were some of the worst offensive lines in football. He now calls Tennessee home: Kevin Zeitler (right guard, Second Team). At one time Zeitler was the highest-paid guard in the NFL, which feels like a nice consolation prize for being recognized at just one Pro Bowl in his 13-year career. Zeitler is on to his sixth team in his 198-game career. But he was picked in the first round, so we're putting him behind Garza, who was a fourth rounder when he entered the league. Sigler also considered several other Giants, including running back Jonathan Stewart and wide receiver Golden Tate, for his list, but they did not make the cut.

The Sacramento Kings came into the offseason focused on improving at point guard, immediately landing veteran Dennis Schroder. With a starting point guard now in Sacramento, veteran Russell Westbrook reportedly remains on the team's radar. NBA Rumors: New York Knicks, Sacramento Kings Eyeing All-Star Guard
The Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks have both been very active this summer, making coaching changes and new additions to their backcourts. Now, both teams are reportedly targeting the same veteran in NBA free agency. In his latest livestream for Bleacher Report, NBA reporter Jake Fischer said that the Kings and Knicks remain the two teams he's heard still have interest in Ben Simmons.
