
Employers urged to provide sound-proof booths and mental health days
HR experts are suggesting that employers provide sound-proof working booths and designated mental health days off to support the emerging generation in the workplace. They recommend creating an environment where everyone can thrive by offering flexible work patterns, encouraging regular breaks, and providing mentorship programmes.
The study of 500 HR professionals, revealed that 77% are taking measures to ensure their workplaces are suitable for neurodivergent employees. It formed part of a report by Benenden Health. The company collaborated with Neurodiversity in Business to inform the report, highlighting what employers can do to support Generation Alpha as they enter the workforce.
Mike Hay, the chief people officer at the healthcare provider, stated: "It is important to understand and support neurodivergent individuals, including those within Generation Alpha, who will make up a growing part of the workforce.
"Communication is key. Creating space for open, two-way conversations where employees feel safe to disclose their needs is essential, especially for those who may have faced stigma in the past."
Dan Harris from the organisation added: "Due to greater awareness and recognition, Autism diagnosis has increased by almost 800% in 20 years and other neurodivergent diagnoses are also on the rise. Businesses of the future need to adapt to this and are set to fail if they don't bring in measures to support these individuals."
He added: 'These measures include increasing understanding, through condition-specific training for HR, managers, and colleagues of neurodivergent people."
He highlighted that it's important to encourage an environment which is accepting of different thinking styles, and recognises the unique strengths neurodivergent people can bring to the workplace if they are not forced into existing, rigid moulds.
To do this he encourages promoting open communication, regular breaks, and implementing flexible working patterns to accommodate the needs of the new generation.
Over 80% recognise the importance of these changes, suggesting that everyone needs to feel supported for better productivity and creativity. In the past year, over two-thirds have noticed an increase in employees advocating for reasonable adjustments in the workplace to meet their needs.
This sentiment is echoed in a separate survey of 500 teenagers aged 13-18, where six in 10 know someone who is neurodivergent, with 57% of those being their friends. When entering the workforce, 47% already know they would prefer to work for a company that supports neurodivergent employees.
Parents of the surveyed teenagers revealed that 52% of children openly discuss neurodiversity with them, with 21% doing so on a regular basis. More than half attribute this to increased national awareness and a desire to be more involved.
Mike added: "This report is more than research. It is a starting point for meaningful change. In the next five years, the workforce will be the most diverse it has ever been, and we need to acknowledge that it takes time to learn and adapt our workplaces and leadership styles to support everyone's needs."

After an ADHD and autism diagnosis, I now find the world more confusing. How do I make sense of this?
I received an ADHD and autism diagnosis at the end of 2024 after a period of stress and depression. I thought that my profession was to blame (I work, however unfittingly, in finance) but have come to appreciate that I am sensitive to many kinds of environmental stressors. It has been difficult to navigate the world since the diagnosis. At first I was ecstatic, finding many of my life's complexities could be easily answered by a natural neurodivergence, but have since found the world to be even more confusing, especially where relationship dynamics are concerned. Some people I have told about my diagnosis have started to baby me slightly. Whereas before the diagnosis I might have struggled along in certain social situations, feeling myself a little bit slow off the mark, or bored, now I am starting to notice a pronounced sense of my 'otherness', which is quite scary. Do you have any advice on how to keep things in proportion after receiving news that can force you to look at life through a completely different lens? Eleanor says: What do we learn when we get a diagnosis? You say to a doctor I have experiences A through F. They say, ah, it sounds like you have condition X. And you say interesting, what's condition X? And they say well one important hallmark of condition X is where you have experiences A through F. It can be so helpful and so emancipatory, but it doesn't necessarily leave us knowing what causes or explains our experiences. In lots of mental health diagnoses, we still don't know those things. Nor do we learn that we experience the world a particular way – we already knew that. Much of the force of the discovery is that it isn't the experience of many others, but medicine has needed to categorise those experiences so they can be helped, explained, accommodated, and so on. Many of us feel the duality you describe after a diagnosis: understood, since we can finally name the patterns, but isolated, since we learn those names at the cost of learning they're unusual. There's relief if it all makes sense; but also dread that it'll always be like this. You mentioned the pronounced sense of otherness. Like being on the outside of a fishbowl looking in. One response is to resist that: othered from whom? Lots of people learn as adults that they're autistic, or have ADHD, or both; lots of people find new ways of understanding their mental experiences. As a result, there's a lot more understanding of these things than maybe ever before. That's not to say you have to take up residence in communities of the literally like-minded. It's just to say that as you meet new people, you may find their experiences are only slightly different to yours. We never know what's happening in other people's minds; if it's otherness we're worried about we may be in the company of more others than we realise. Another response, though, is to allow that feeling of otherness. Similarity is helpful for connection, it's true. To that extent, it's frightening to learn that we're not so similar to others. That will make some things harder. But similarity isn't the only way to connect. You can feel reverence, awe, cherishment, for things that aren't much like you at all. Indeed, being in front of things unlike you can make you more aware of and reverent toward the contrasts in yourself. We feel this all the time with the natural world: lots of people feel deep love for, feel most themselves around, the ocean, the night sky, an animal. It's not because they seem the same as us. All that is to say: it can be precisely by standing in contrast, and not similarity, that you can simultaneously appreciate what is true of others and what is true of you. There's a kind of connection available here based on a true vision of each other, not just on being similar.

Dorset mum despairs over lack of school for autistic son
The mother of a five-year-old autistic boy has said she is despairing after he was left without any suitable school provision. Axel was due to start primary school in Dorset last September after being offered a place at the family's first-choice. But the offer was withdrawn in July 2024 after his Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) recommended one-to-one support – which the school said it could not provide. Since then, Axel has remained at homeDorset Council said it was important to find education suitable for each child but that "sometimes this takes longer than we would like". Axel, who is non-verbal and has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), finds unfamiliar environments extremely challenging, according to his mum Carly."His social skills are going downhill," she said. "It's awkward for us to meet up with friends with other kids because I just don't know how he's going to be with them. "It's so lonely for him at the moment." Carly said she felt let down by Dorset Council and was frustrated by the lack of communication."By law, the term after a child turns five years old, they should be in a school setting," she said. "A year on and we are still no closer to knowing where he'll end up."The people that should be there to put these things in place just aren't there. The communication is poor."She said being at home full-time to care for Axel was taking a toll on her wellbeing and leaving her unable to work or access respite care."It is hard. So hard. I've reached out for respite because I'm just struggling to cope," she said. "Just trying to do everyday things is just so hard when he's with me all the time. "And I feel awful for saying that because I'm his mum - but the reality is that he should be somewhere where he's getting the support he needs." Axel's case has been taken up by Lib Dem MP Vikki used Deputy Prime Minister's Questions last week to tell Angela Rayner there was no alternative provision for younger people like Axel and hundreds of others in her said: "I know the councils are doing all they can but long-term failure to fund schools properly means that schools cannot manage children who need some extra support, and so they get forced out and councils don't have the places to send these children".Responding to the Mid Dorset and North Poole MP's concerns, Rayner said: "I am really sorry to hear about Axel.. Those with special educational needs deserve proper support and should not be left at home. "We are determined to fix the SEND system and support children before issues escalate to this type of crisis point."Paul Dempsey, Dorset Council's executive director for children's services, said: "We do not comment publicly on the cases of individual children or young people, but we do look at each of them individually when they need extra support at school and talk to their families about the care and education we are able to provide for them. "Sometimes this takes a little longer than we would like but it is really important to find education that is suitable for each individual child." Inspirational North Lanarkshire garden takes shape at new home
The Down's Syndrome Scotland garden will be located at the Watch US Grow charity within Palacerigg Country Park, Cumbernauld. Work has started to give an award-winning garden from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show a permanent home in North Lanarkshire. The Down's Syndrome Scotland garden will be located at the Watch US Grow charity within Palacerigg Country Park, Cumbernauld. This has been funded by Project Giving Back, a unique grant-making charity that supports cause-driven gardens at RHS Chelsea, ensuring their legacy continues by relocating them to community sites across the UK. Watch US Grow supports young adults with Additional Support Needs with gardening and life skills, and they will be involved in recreating and then maintaining the garden, which will be open to the public from next year. Designed by Nick Burton and Duncan Hall of Burton Hall Garden Design, the garden takes visitors on a journey through the life of someone with Down's syndrome. It highlights their many unique qualities while also challenging visitors to appreciate and understand the barriers that people with Down's syndrome still face as they strive to live their best lives. It was inspired by Duncan's eight-year-old nephew, Liam, who has Down's syndrome and is supported by Down's Syndrome Scotland. The garden was awarded a Silver Gilt medal for small show garden and the People's Choice for Best Small Show Garden. North Lanarkshire Council Leader Jim Logue and Convener of the council's Environment and Climate Change Committee Councillor Helen Loughran visited the garden site to meet the team involved. 'The garden is truly inspirational, creating a picture of the qualities of people with Down's syndrome as well as the challenges and barriers they face on a daily basis,' Councillor Logue said. 'The young people from Watch US Grow will benefit hugely from being involved in planting and looking after the garden and we're proud to have the garden here at Palacerigg Country Park for visitors to enjoy for years to come. 'We also hope it raises awareness of and sparks discussion about the issues faced by people with disabilities in our communities.' The double award-winning garden will officially open in May 2026 when it will be in full bloom, recreating the stunning garden that was seen by the thousands of visitors to RHS Chelsea last month. 'For a charity like Watch Us Grow, who use gardening to educate and improve people's lives, there is no greater opportunity than this,' said Tom Harten, General Manager at Watch US Grow. 'The Down's Syndrome Scotland Garden will now become an integral part of Watch Us Grow and the work we do. It will be maintained by adults with Additional Support Needs, which will include Down's Syndrome but also Autism and a range of other learning disabilities. 'This is so great for so many including the two charities, Watch Us Grow and Down's Syndrome Scotland, and the garden designers but also for North Lanarkshire, Palacerigg Country Park, the local community and garden lovers all over Scotland who may like to visit. I would like to thank Down's Syndrome Scotland for recognising the work we do and choosing to partner with us to look after this amazing garden.' Eddie McConnell, who is the Chief Executive of Down's Syndrome Scotland and who lives locally in Cumbernauld, joined the Leader and the Convener in their recent visit to the garden at Watch US Grow.
